Send Easter Eggs in the Mail

When you’re a kid, getting something in the mail is a pretty big deal.  (Heck, even as an adult I get excited about anything that isn’t a bill or junk!)  What you may not know about the mail is, you can send all kinds of stuff besides just boxes!  I once knew somebody who attached a mailing label directly to a playground-style rubber ball and sent it to her nieces and nephews.  Crazy, right?  Kierste from Simply Kierste took advantage of the post office’s odd package policy and decided to try sending her kids Easter eggs in the mail!  Imagine the looks on your kiddos’ faces when the mailman brings them a special delivery from the Easter Bunny – or anyone of any age, for that matter.  It’ll be such an unexpected surprise!  [how to send Easter eggs in the mail]

Project estimate:

  • Jumbo plastic egg, $1
  • Candy, on hand or $1 and up
  • Easter grass, on hand or $1
  • Postage, about $3

Total:  about $4 and up

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

I thought I was done with my Easter crafting, but on a whim I wandered through the holiday section at Dollar Tree one last time – just in case, ya know?  That’s when I came across a set of interesting plastic eggs, designed to sit upright with transparent, domed tops on them.  I immediately thought of my Easter egg faux terrarium project and decided it would be neat to make something similar to be a companion to that piece.  You could do so many cute things inside the eggs with this idea; I chose to make a set of little bunnies in mine!

Project estimate:

  • Dome-style Easter eggs, $1
  • Plastic coins, on hand or $1
  • Craft foam, on hand or $1
  • Wooden spools, on hand or $1
  • Miniature picket fence, about $2
  • Small flat pins, about $2
  • Googly eyes, on hand
  • Sharpie, on hand
  • Paint, on hand
  • Paper flowers, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand

Total: about $5 and up

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

These are the eggs that I used for the project.  They came in a set of three.  See how they are just begging to be mounted on pedestals?

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

The bottom of the egg on the inside was a little bit curved, and I wanted a flat surface to work on.  So I looked for something that would fit nicely into the bottoms of the eggs and discovered that some plastic coins left over from Mardi Gras were the perfect size.  Don’t have plastic coins?  You can also cut small circles out of stiff cardboard for this step.

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

Cut a piece of green craft foam the same size as each coin and glue the pieces together.  Now it’ll look more like grass at the bottom of the egg!

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

Glue the foam-covered circles into the bottoms of the eggs.

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

Here’s where you can go a little crazy!  There are a zillion different little things you can put inside the egg domes.  I decided that a springy scene was in order and dug some appropriate bits out of my stash, including a length of miniature picket fence.  I used scissors to cut small sections of fence that would fit inside my eggs.

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

Bend the sections of fence into curved shapes and glue them into the eggs as shown, creating a backdrop.  I also added a couple of small paper flowers to each section of fence.

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

To make the bunnies you will need small flat pins (similar to clothespins) and for the pedestals you will need wooden spools.  To make my set of three eggs, I used three flat pins and a total of six spools.

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

Paint all of the wood pieces white.  Or whatever color you want, really.

Tutorial: Easter Bunny Egg Domes

Add a pair of tiny googly eyes to each flat pin and use an ultra fine tip Sharpie to draw a nose and mouth.  Then all that remains is to glue a bunny into each egg and glue the spools to the bottoms of the eggs to elevate them.  Aren’t they fun?

What would you put inside of these domed Easter eggs?

Ribbon Ear Easter Egg Bunnies

I love plastic Easter egg crafts – in large part because it seems like I always end up with exponentially more of them every year, even if I don’t buy any. I swear they multiply like rabbits. …Or you can turn them into rabbits! Christina from I Gotta Create! originally made these plastic egg bunnies using chenille stems, which are also adorable, but her ribbon-eared ones take the cute factor over the top! (And, as a ribbon hoarder, I’m a fan of anything that’s an excuse to dig into my stash!) [how to make ribbon-eared Easter egg bunnies]

Project estimate:

  • Plastic Easter eggs, on hand or $1
  • Wire-edged ribbon, on hand or $1
  • Pom poms, on hand or $1
  • Glue, on hand

Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter Egg Bouquet

After a couple of recent trips to Dollar Tree, I have been heavily into my Easter crafting. My latest creation is a bouquet of a dozen colorful eggs, arranged in a fun little vessel (I think it’s supposed to be a watering can?) that I thought looked very springy. After the holiday I will probably disassemble the bouquet (I don’t know how well it will store, so rather than break it I will just take it apart) – I am so happy with the way the container turned out that I will definitely be working it into my holiday decor again next year!

Project estimate:

  • Container, $1
  • Stencils, on hand or $1 and up
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Floral foam, on hand or $1
  • Easter egg picks (large and small), $2
  • Easter grass, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total: $3 and up

Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter Egg Bouquet

As soon as I spotted this little metal container I knew I wanted to do something for Easter with it. It’s just so cute!

Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter Egg Bouquet

Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter Egg Bouquet

I dressed it up with stencils; first I painted a bunny, then I added grass. Both stencils are from the Martha Stewart Holiday Icons II set, which covers a whole bunch of holidays and has come in handy for me so many times! This particular set is self-adhesive, and they work great on curved surfaces. The painted I used was also from the Martha Stewart line, with both colors in a pearl finish.

Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter Egg Bouquet

Cut a piece of floral foam to fit inside the container and glue it in place with hot glue.

Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter Egg Bouquet

Arrange your egg picks in the foam. I used 5 large eggs and 7 small eggs for a dozen total.

Tutorial: Dollar Store Easter Egg Bouquet

Cover the foam with Easter grass; work it around the picks and tuck the ends and any excess into the space around the edges of the foam.

I still need to add a few more details to my display, but my Easter decor is staring to come together! How about yours?

When it came time to think of Easter crafts this year, I knew I wanted to do something with my stash of craft foam. When I found a pile of composition notebooks I bought for cheap back in the fall, I decided that an Easter-egg-inspired notebook was in order. I’m giving it to my friend’s son as a gift, so I added his name to the front cover as well!

Project estimate:

  • Craft foam, on hand or $1 and up
  • Composition book, $1
  • Foam letter stickers, $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Edging scissors, on hand

Total: $2 and up

Tutorial: Easter Egg Composition Book

Choose craft foam in a variety of springy, bright colors. I had lots to choose from – I always buy more than I need every time I use it for a project and somehow I’ve amassed quite a stack!

Tutorial: Easter Egg Composition Book

Trace the covers of the notebook onto two sheets of craft foam in the same color.

Tutorial: Easter Egg Composition Book

Cut the foam pieces out and glue them to the front and back of the notebook.

Tutorial: Easter Egg Composition Book

Use scrapbook edging scissors in various patterns to cut stripes of foam on other colors. Cut two of each color so you can make matching stripes on the front and back. I also cut one strip with straight edges that I used for adding a name.

Tutorial: Easter Egg Composition Book

Glue the stripes to the covers and trim any excess foam around the edges as needed.

As an optional final touch, use foam stickers to add the recipient’s name or the sentiment of your choice to the front cover.
