I’ve made something similar, but I knitted my stash into I-cords before putting them into the ornament. Just another way to show off texture and color!

I did this for some of my students in 2006. I was teaching them knitting and wanted to give them a gift to remember the year they started knitting. I wrote the date and our group name on the outside with paint pen. I also made one for me because that was the year I taught myself to knit. I filled the ball with scraps of the different yarns I had use in projects that year. I don’t remember where I saw the idea either, I have searched through my craft links, but no luck.
