About the Collaboration:

In 2010, I teamed up with talented designer Cathe Holden of Inspired Barn to create a printable tea towel calendar. She designed the printables, and I made the calendar and wrote the instructions, and then we provided the free printables to you! This year, we have a new design available — our all-new 2018 printable tea towel calendar, as well a sweet card, that you can download (click the image above), print, and make for a special handmade touch.

Now, on to the project!

Supplies for the 2018 Printable Tea Towel Calendar:

This project is simple, but you definitely need a few supplies that will make it WAY easier. Don’t skimp on these supplies, as it will save you some headaches.

Free Printable 2018 Tea Towel Calendar by Cathe Holden & Dollar Store Crafts

Supplies Needed:

  • Free Printable: 2018 Tea Towel Calendar
  • A flour sack towel
  • 2 Iron-on transfer sheets (buy them in a pack)
  • Freezer paper
  • Parchment paper
  • Inkjet printer
  • Iron and Ironing board
  • Large wooden cutting board
  • Sewing machine & thread
  • Scissors, pins

Notes about the Materials:

Dollar store materials: I got the flour sack towel and parchment paper at the dollar store. I have seen iron on transfers there before, but I have never used the ones they sell, and I don’t see them there consistently. If you are using the dark fabric iron-on transfers, DO NOT SKIP THE PARCHMENT PAPER!

Tea towels: I got flour sack towels from the dollar store, but I also wanted to try something less plain, so I picked up a pack of four colored and patterned flour sack towels from Target for about $5 total. (The grey polka-dot towel used in the photo above is from the pack from Target).

Iron-On transfer sheets: I just bought a pack at my local craft store that had both transparent sheets and the type you use for dark fabric, because I wanted to experiment with both kinds. Honestly, I would not recommend the kind I used (you can see the brand in the photo), as I had many craftfails while making this project! If you are using a patterned tea towel, use the dark fabric type of iron-ons, but if you are using a white tea towel, use the transparent kind.

Freezer paper: This paper is waxed on one side, and paper on the other side, which means you can iron it onto your fabric and then easily remove it later. The freezer paper is a DO NOT SKIP supply because it stabilizes the flour sack towels while you apply the iron-ons, which is essential because of the loose weave of the towels. You can find freezer paper in the food wrap section of your local grocery store, or online (affiliate link to Amazon for your convenience): buy freezer paper.

Freezer paper is cheaper if you buy it in a store, but one roll will last you forever, and you can use it for many cool craft techniques like making iron-ons for perfect fabric stencils, or for paper piecing in quilting.

Download the 2018 Printable Tea Towel Calendar:

Phew, that was long. Let’s dive into the project!

Step 1: Download the Calendar Top & Bottom

Choose your favorite color combination, and download the files you will need for your calendar. Click on the image to be taken to Google Drive to download the printable tea towel calendar files you want.

Note: If you are using transparent (light fabric) iron-ons, you will need the REVERSED bottom calendar image. If you are using opaque (dark fabric) iron-ons, you will need the normal, readable one!

Step 2: Print the Calendar Printables on Iron-on Transfer Paper

I don’t have a recommendation for a specific variety of iron on paper at this time (because I didn’t like the type I used). Do be aware: if you are using a dark or patterned tea towel, you will need to use the dark fabric type of iron-ons.

If you are using the transparent kind of iron-ons, you will need the REVERSE image file for the calendar.

How to Make the 2018 Printable Tea Towel Calendar

Step 3: Cut & Sew the Tea Towel

Free Printable 2018 Tea Towel Calendar by Cathe Holden & Dollar Store Crafts

  1. Iron your tea towel before you start.
  2. Flour sack towels are usually large and square, so cut it in half.Free Printable 2018 Tea Towel Calendar by Cathe Holden & Dollar Store Crafts
  3. Fold the cut end over and iron it flat. This is where you will hem it to make it match the other side! Pin the hem (don’t skip this step, because this floppy fabric is hard to sew if you don’t pin it).
Free Printable 2018 Tea Towel Calendar by Cathe Holden & Dollar Store Crafts

Sew the side hem.

Step 4: Freezer Paper — The Secret Weapon

Free Printable 2018 Tea Towel Calendar by Cathe Holden & Dollar Store Crafts

Iron a piece of of freezer paper to the back of the tea towel. Place the waxed side DOWN onto the fabric, and iron over the paper side. It will stick to the tea towel and stabilize it, making it WAY easier to successfully apply the iron on transfer to the other side. When you’re all done with the process, you can easily remove the freezer paper by peeling it away. (Do that at the end of the project!)

Step 5: On to the Calendar!

Free Printable 2018 Tea Towel Calendar by Cathe Holden & Dollar Store Crafts

Your iron-on transfer paper will come with instructions for printing and application, so follow them. I will give some general guidelines for success here:

  1. Use a hard, heat-proof surface to iron on, if you can. I pulled the built-in wooden cutting board from my kitchen counters.
  2. If you are using opaque (dark fabric) iron-ons, use a piece of parchment paper to iron over the top of your iron-on. My iron-ons included a piece of parchment paper that was the same size as the iron-on sheet, and since it was impossible to keep the same-size parchment paper covering the transfer while I moved the iron, it ruined my transfer.
  3. Iron the top and the bottom pieces very close together. Once you’ve ironed the first one, protect it with a piece of parchment paper while you iron the second one.

Remove the freezer paper from the back by simply peeling it off!

A fully-furnished dollhouse contains more than just tiny couches and chairs; it has all of the trapping of day-to-day life.  Keep track of which specific day that is with a dollhouse-sized calendar!  While the pages on this calendar design don’t turn, its Mod Podge coating makes it far more durable than paper alone, and its construction gives it a very realistic appearance.  You can even reduce your own photos to print out and use for this project if you want!

Project estimate:

  • Calendar, on hand
  • Copy machine, on hand or about $0.10 per copy
  • Mod Podge, on hand
  • Magazine page, on hand
  • Straight pin, on hand
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  Free and up

I happened to have some little one-inch-square stickers with calendar months on them, but you probably don’t just have those laying about willy-nilly.  If that is the case, use a photocopier to reduce an actual calendar page down to one inch wide.

Cut four or five pieces of paper that are one inch wide and twice as tall as the height of your reduced calendar page.  (Since my calendar page is one inch square, my pieces of paper are one inch by two inches.)  Fold all but one of the pieces in half.

Use Mod Podge to glue all of the folded pieces stacked inside of each other.  Glue the stack of folded paper onto one end of the last piece of paper, attaching them with the folded edges running along the center of the project and the raw edges lining up with the outside edges.

Cut out your calendar image as well as an appropriately-sized image for the picture portion of the calendar.  The pictures I used for my calendars came from my trusty collection of pretty magazine pages.  Attach these images to the paper, with the stacked end facing toward the bottom.  Seal the entire thing with several coats of Mod Podge.

To make it look like it is nailed or thumb tacked to the wall, carefully cut the head off of a straight pin and use a tiny dab of glue to attach it centered and toward the top of the calendar.  (Tip:  Most jewelry pliers have built-in wire cutters.)

Once the Mod Podge cures completely and the glue is dry, hang it in your dollhouse by gluing it to the wall.  If you want to be able to move the calendar around, stick it to the wall with poster putty instead.

Advent calendars can be as unique as a fingerprint. They can be made out of just about anything and are a fun thing to craft and customize. But what exactly is an Advent calendar you ask? Well, according to Wikipedia, “An Advent calendar is a special calendar which is used to count or celebrate the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. […] Despite the name, most commercially available Advent calendars begin on December 1, regardless of when Advent begins, which can be as early as November 27 and as late as December 3.”

So if you’re starting late, and need some ideas for this year’s Advent calendar, hopefully this roundup will inspire you to create your own for this year, or use this season to create one for next year!

Reports are still coming in from around the country: the ten secret stashbusters from our April Stash Bust worked hard to bust their super secret packages. April was such a successful (and super busy) month for me, that I had recover before I could finish writing about the projects. And guess what — there are still a few more projects to write ab0ut!

Speaking of April Stash Bust, I never announced who the winner was: it was Nicole Maki from Made By Nicole for her stashbusted cloth napkins. She won a ton of cool prizes*.

Now, on to the super secret stashbusting projects:

Lee-Ann from Flicted Sewing Room received the yellow stash in the Super Secret Stash project, and she posted her first project: a Summer Satchel she made from a dollar store flour sack towel. (See photo at the top of the post).

Terry S. got the orange package, and started with this old stationery folder (I seriously had this for more than ten years). She transformed it into:

A wall calendar! She said:

i absolutely loved the old navy stationary/paper holder and immediately knew i wanted to make something with it. i needed a calendar for my craft room because i am really bad at keeping track of dates (as proven by my tardiness on this project!), so i turned it into a wall calendar that i can also take with me when needed.  i took out the inside pockets and covered the whole thing with pattered paper and added a ribbon pen holder in the middle. as much as i liked the pattern, i thought part of the project should be to totally recreate it.

since it came with ribbons attached on the sides, i kept these and use them to hang the calendar right by the side of my desk  i customized it with 2 copies of each month, just in case, and added a ribbon loop to hold a pen in the middle. i wanted the calendar to be pretty and also reusable, soi designed it so i can change the months and weekly lists out when needed. for traveling, it can be folded in half like a notebook with the ribbons tied together.

since i liked the original pattern on the folder i saved the inside folders and used them as the covers for a small business card book.

Cynthia (aka, Ms. Pink) has posted several projects, and here’s her newest one: an embellished onesie:

And, Julie from Floribunda Quilts made some ATCs with her stash:

I am so excited! I love those old tea towels that have calendars printed on them, and I thought, hey, we can make one of those on Dollar Store Crafts! And then I thought, and you know who would design a FABULOUS calendar? Cathe Holden from Just Something I Made, that’s who! I first became aware of Cathe’s genius when I somehow stumbled upon her reverse-painted sign tutorial, and it totally blew my mind with its awesomeness. Then I found out that all of Cathe’s amazing creations are equally mindblowing, and I became an instant fangirl! So, I approached Cathe with my tea towel calendar project idea, and to my delight, she agreed to design the calendar!

So, I’m going to give you the instructions for making your very own 2010 tea towel calendar, and Cathe has graciously provided the accompanying printables on her website. She’s also provided a printable card graphic that matches the calendar, so your gift and card will be all coordinated! So head on over there and download them, then get printing and make some calendars. These will make amazing hostess gifts, gifts for co-workers, grandparents, or anyone who needs a little gift. The cost is pretty low per piece, and you don’t have to do much hands-on work to make a great-looking handmade gift.

Project Estimate:

  • Flour sack towel or stash fabric, $1 or on hand
  • 2 Iron-on transfer sheets, about $1 each
  • Patterned tea towel (optional), $1
  • Dowel (optional), $1

Total: $2 and up

I got iron-on transfers at my local big box store in a package of 6 for about $7.50. They are slightly less expensive if you buy a package of 12 (about $15).

You can use one flour sack towel to make two calendars (you’ll cut the flour sack towel in half, and then hem the edges), or you can use one flour sack towel calendar sewn on top of a colorful towel. I used a red and white gingham towel. It’s not very difficult, and it looks great!

When you place the calendar on the towel (prior to ironing), remember that you will be folding about 1″ over on the top to make a channel for a dowel (if you’re using a dowel for hanging).

Also, remember to iron your flour sack towel well before you begin. Because of the loose weave on the dollar store flour sack towels, the fabric isn’t very stiff and has a tendency to stretch and get wonky (see photo below for an example – the top hem is crooked!). Pins are your friend!

To make plain flour sack towel version:

  1. Cut flour sack towel in half, if desired.
  2. To make the channel for the dowel: Fold top of flour sack towel over approximately 1″ from top and pin in place. Sew across the pinned area, about 3/4″ from the edge. This is where you’ll slip the dowel through when you hang the calendar. Skip this step if desired… thumbtacks will work fine for hanging the calendar!
  3. Print out the printables onto regular iron-on transfer sheets and follow manufacturer’s directions for ironing.
Printing reminder: Make sure you choose the “mirror” setting when you print them up – so they print up backward, but will face the right direction when ironed on! Also, there are two iron-on sheets, so make sure they are facing the same direction when you iron them on (just in case we have any crafters in the audience who might be related to me and my non-detail-oriented ways!)
  4. Iron printables onto flour sack towel or light-colored plain stash fabric.
  5. Fold raw edges over, and fold over again. Iron the fold in place, pin, and sew around edges. (I cut the already-hemmed edges off of my flour sack towel so I could hem both sides to match!

If you’re doing the plain flour sack towel version, you’re done!

To make gingham dish towel version (steps 1-4 are the same):

  1. Cut flour sack towel in half.
  5. Cut flour sack towel down to fit inside the edges of your backing dish towel. Be sure to leave at least 1″ around edges of printed area for folding/hem area.
  6. Fold raw edges over, and fold over again. Iron the fold in place, pin to backing dish towel. Sew around edges.
