Today I would like to show you how I took my favorite gift wrap from the holiday season and re-purposed it into a new wreath! I used stuff I got at the dollar store, and things I already had in my craft stash to make a cute and funny wreath that I’m excited to hang up in my office. Do you have extra gift wrap with a cute design that would make a great wreath? Then read on for instructions on how to transform your gift wrap into a simple and fun wreath project.

Wreath a Day: #1

I bought this winter taco gift wrap on the first day it was for sale (for $2 a roll) at Target. I had to have it — who doesn’t love tacos? And I get sick of the samey-samey holiday gift wrap. I instantly gravitated toward the cute tacos wearing scarves and their avocado compadres. (I admit, I am a bit of a gift warp hoarder… it’s hard for me to pass on cute gift wrap.)

My favorite gifts under the Christmas tree were definitely wrapped in this taco paper! So when I went looking for supplies in my craft hoarder’s paradise, ahem, I mean my garage, I was immediately drawn to this paper once again. I grabbed it, and some dollar store stickers (that I also found in my CHP — yeah, Craft Hoarder’s Paradise), and went to town.

How to Make a Recycled Gift Wrap Wreath:

Supplies Needed:

• A foam wreath form, $1
• Roll of gift wrap, on hand or $1
• A sheet of card stock, on hand
• Stickers, on hand or $1
• Glue (I used Aleene’s Clear Tacky Glue)
• Hot glue gun and Glue Sticks
• Baker’s twine, on hand or $1
• Ribbon, on hand or $1

Total cost: $1 and up

Step 1: Cut out all the cute things printed on your gift wrap.

In my case, I carefully cut out tacos wearing scarves, avocados, and tomatoes. Your gift wrap probably has something different on it, and that’s okay! Notice what colors are used in your gift wrap, and pick one of the colors that you’d like to highlight when you choose your card stock. I chose to use a red striped card stock I had on hand.

Step 2: Glue the gift wrap cut outs to the card stock, leaving enough space around them to cut them out and provide a card stock border.

Alternately, if you don’t want a card stock border, you can skip step 1, and glue gift wrap directly to the card stock, then cut out the figures in one step.

The card stock IS important to provide stability to the gift wrap, which is lightweight and too floppy to glue directly to the wreath.

Step 3: Cut out the figures from the card stock, leaving a small border.

Step 4: Cut strips of wrapping paper about 1″ wide (doesn’t have to be exact).

Step 5: Secure gift wrap strip to the foam wreath form with a dab of hot glue. Wrap the strips around the wreath, overlapping as you go, to cover the entire wreath form. When you reach the end of a strip of gift wrap, glue it to the wreath, then start a new strip where the old one ends.

And, the wreath form is all covered! Now it’s time to decorate it.

Step 6: Tie a piece of baker’s twine to the top of the wreath for a hanger. Then tie a piece of ribbon into a bow to put on the top of the wreath and glue it in place with hot glue.

Step 6: Prearrange the pieces of the wreath to decide where they will go, then when you are happy with their placement, glue them into place with hot glue.

Step 7: Add dollar store stickers to the rest of the wreath to finish it.

Then you’re done! This wreath is a great lightweight wreath to use for home decor, or put in your cubicle at work.

I’ve made a new commitment for 2017: I am going to make a wreath a day for the entire year! That’s 365 wreaths, and I am gonna make them all!

First I want to tell you about the rules I have laid out for myself:

1. I will make 365 wreaths this year
2. I will focus on using materials I already have in my stash (read: my full garage of stuff)
3. I will post about my wreath-making progress right here at Dollar Store Crafts
4. I will attempt to make one wreath a day, BUT
5. If I fall behind, I am allowed to make it up, as long as
6. I will make 365 wreaths this year.

That way, if I have a day where there’s no way I can make a wreath, my project isn’t completely blown. I am happy with this set of rules because it allows me to complete my goal without getting upset if for some reason I fail on one day.

‘Tis the Season to get ugly… with an ugly christmas sweater, that is! I was challenged to create an already-ugly sweater from UglyChristmasSweater.com into an even more ugly creation. I couldn’t say no to the challenge! Here I am modeling the ugly sweater BEFORE I got ugly-crafty with it. Also, dig the dollar store decorations in the front yard. I know how to get ugly, y’all!

I have to admit how happy I am that ugly Christmas sweaters are “a thing” now. I even bought an Ugly Christmas Sweater cookie decorating kit.

Uglify a Christmas Sweater With Dollar Store Stuff!

Project Materials:

• A sweater, on hand
• Elf doll, $1
• Dollar store Christmas stocking, $1
• Additional embellishments, as desired
• Embroidery thread and needle (or hot glue)

Total: $2 and up

To Make:

1. Start with a sweater (find one in your closet or at the thrift store), and add the least attractive dollar store Christmas decorations you can find.

I used an Elf doll and a felt Christmas stocking. And I turned my sweater inside-out to give it more of a Cosby Sweater vibe.

2. Sew or glue the objects to your sweater. I sewed mine with embroidery thread and a running stitch (so I can remove them and re-decorate my sweater every year!).

I sewed the Elf to the stomach of the sweater because I am pregnant and my original concept was to make an elf in utero (Christmas light umbilical cord, anyone?) I left the stocking open at the top so I can insert goodies before I go to my holiday parties… who wants a candy cane?

But First, We Bought A House!

A month ago, we bought a new house (and by “new” I mean it was built in 1964!). After house-hunting ALL SUMMER LONG, we had looked at every house in town. I seriously feel like an expert in our town’s real estate now! So after months of looking, we were going to settle on a house and make an offer, but we went out looking at houses just one more time with our Realtor. She told us about one that had just come onto the market the day before, so we decided to go take a look at it.

Well, after checking this house out, we KNEW it was a winner. The previous owners had spared no expense on details in the house – from top-of-the-line blinds, to a fully landscaped yard. We knew from our summer of house-hunting that this house was going to get snatched up immediately, so we decided to put an offer on it the next day. Well, our offer went in NONE TOO SOON because two other families made offers the same day! Lucky for us, the owners decided to choose ours, so we FINALLY had a house… of course, it takes about a month to actually complete the buying process, but that’s a totally different post.

So, at the beginning of October, we moved (everyone groan together — moving stinks!), and we are finally getting somewhat settled into our new home. Well, along with a new home, some other new items are needed! Among them, a new bed for one of our three boys. You see, our youngest boy had been sleeping in our queen-sized guest bed, but in our new house, we wanted him to move into a “boys dorm” bedroom with his two brothers. They already had bunk-beds, so we needed to add a twin-sized bed to the mix.

Enter Lightheaded Beds – a traditional wooden bed with a very modern feature — a light-up headboard with interchangeable graphics. We did a switcheroo with the boys and put our youngest boy on the bunk-bed, and let the oldest son have his own bed.

Here’s how it works: the bed has a light-up LED headboard and a slot to put in a graphic image. You turn on the light, and the image glows from the headboard — very cool! In case you need help imagining it, it’s kind of like one of those lit-up movie posters at the theater.

Switching the graphic is easy enough for a child year-old to do!

You can either order a bed of your choice online at LightheadedBeds.com or head to Sam’s Club to get a great deal on a Lightheaded Bed. Once you have the bed, you select a few images that can easily be changed out or you can order your own custom images. The footboard of the bed also works as storage for the other images that are not in use.

What to like about Lightheaded Beds:

• These beds are classic-looking and sturdy. They are made out of real wood and they all come with a matching headboard and footboard — in a variety of styles.
• The headboard’s backlit panel lets you change the images so when your child grows and changes interests, these beds grow with them!  Interchange the images in a matter of seconds!
• The bed itself has a bright, LED-lit headboard — which is bright enough to read by.
• There’s a remote with options to make the headboard brighter or dimmer and also ways to set the headboard light on a timer. (My boys LOVE the remote!)
  
• The footboard has a secret compartment to store the images you’re not using: up to 25 of them — thank you to the designers for thinking of us organizationally-challenged mamas. And the images are easy to switch in and out, with the headboard top hinged so that it stays open (no finger smashing).
• You can create your own custom images, too! When you upload your pictures, they have to be very high resolution because the image will be printed at 33 x 13 inches.
• But there are so many great images to choose from — My boys had a ton of fun choosing their favorite images. They picked so many that we had to make up a game to help them narrow down their choices to four. (“Which space picture do you like better? This one or this one?”)
• There are also a lot of well-known licensed character images to choose from. Check out all of the Disney & Marvel images for your cartoon-loving kiddos.

One of the best things about having children is that it really helps you to recapture the magic of the holiday season! All the traditions of Christmas become fun again when you get to carry them out with your children. A lot of fun kids’ traditions surround our Christmas: cutting down our own tree, the boys decorating the tree to the sounds of Christmas music, buying a Christmas cookie magazine and picking our favorite recipe to try, and on and on. This year, we are trying a new tradition: The Secret Society of Bubblers.

The other night while my three boys were finishing up dinner, I dimmed the lights and brought out a special envelope. I told them that they got a letter, and read it to them.

When you get your kit, you’ll receive a few things: a letter with a story, a certificate, tokens, bubbles, and a magnifying glass.

I read the letter out loud to the boys, and they were really interested in it. The jist of the letter is that your child will be helping a Microscopic Elf earn a place in Santa’s Workshop. It seems that there are tiny “microscopic” elves born all over the world, and the only way they can fulfill their dream of making it to the North Pole is through the kindness of a child they select to be their “Bubbler.”

The letter asks your child to name his or her elf. Since I have three boys, I asked them all what they wanted to name their elf. They all had different answers: Alfred, Keith, and Fred. I asked them if they wanted to vote on one name, and they all voted for their own nomination (of course!) so we settled on this: the elf will be named Alfred Keith-Fred.

When we were done reading the letter, Gideon said, “Who sent that letter? Was it Santa? I hope it was Santa.”

To send your elf to the North Pole, you have to get caught being kind — above and beyond kind. And when you are caught being kind, you get B-Kind Tokens.

Each kit has five “B KIND” tokens – each featuring a different elf. And this is the fun part! Your child should complete acts of kindness to receive these tokens, and then their elf gives the tokens in discreet ways (under the pillow, etc). They will believe that the elves are watching and noticing their good deeds. That is what I love about the Secret Society of Bubblers – it teaches kids that being “good” is not about “not being naughty” — it’s about being KIND!

So far, my boys have:

• Evander (age 5) shared a piece of his Halloween candy with me without being asked.
• Lewis (age 7) put a new toilet paper roll on the holder in the bathroom. (Has that EVER happened before? ha!)
• Gideon (age 4) shared some building blocks with his brother, but I think it was a play for a token! At least he is practicing kindness.

Once your child has earned the five tokens, you get to fill in the certificate and give it to them along with the magic bubbles. This is another opportunity to get creative! Hide the certificate and bubbles somewhere that would be fun to discover. They’ll love it! ON Christmas Eve, your child will blow the bubbles so that his or her elf can travel to Santa’s Workshop.
