When I spied this large mason jar at the thrift store, I thought it would make for a fun lamp. My son commented that it looked like a Lego head, and this idea was born. Lego Head Night Light - I have to try this!

My kids are wild about Legos, like many kids (and adults!)  When I spied this large mason jar at the thrift store, I thought it would make for a fun lamp.  My son commented that it looked like a Lego head, and this idea was born. While I used a large jar, you could easily recreate this on a smaller scale with a mason jar from Dollar Tree or one you have in your craft stash.

lego lamp DIY

Project estimate:

  • Mason jar, on hand
  • Paint, on hand
  • Clear labels, on hand
  • Push light, $1

Total: $1

step 1

Step one:  Paint the inside of the jar and the lid yellow.

lego

Step two:  Print the faces onto clear labels.  I used these labels from OnlineLabels.com and formatted my printable to fit that size.  Adhere the label face to the jar.  I put a different face on two sides, just for variety!

step 3

Step three:  I used a push light from Dollar Tree that has an adhesive sticker already on it.  Just peel off the backing and stick the push light under the lid of the jar.

DIY lego lamp

I don’t screw the lid on fully, just to make the push light easier to access.  Now you have a fun night light that makes cute room decor during the daytime!  This jar could also double as storage if you don’t need a light.  Another idea is to use a milk jug instead of a mason jar and turn it into a Valentine holder, similar to this Dollar Store Crafts project I shared recently.  Have fun building and crafting!

While it’s often something that we toss into the recycling bin without so much as a second thought, cardboard is actually a pretty amazing craft material!  We’ve seen it transformed into some pretty amazing things, including this fun, geometric lamp from Marta at 2nd Funniest Thing.  The instructions for the project are in Spanish, but the photos are excellent and make it easy to follow along.  This would be a super fun project for a dorm room or a teen’s homework desk!  [how to make a recycled cardboard geometric lamp]

  • Tape, on hand or $1 and up
  • Lamp kit, about $5 and up

As someone who is obsessed with miniatures, I squealed a little bit when I first saw this tiny version of the classic leg lamp (as seen in “A Christmas Story”), which was created by Instructables user seamster.  Already amazed at the scale – it’s made from a Barbie leg – I then realized something else completely amazing – this one is even a working lamp!  Crazy, right?  If you’re up for it, the instructions show you how to add the electrical components – or you can skip that bit if you’re not comfortable with your wiring skills and go for one that’s just for show.  [how to make a miniature leg lamp]

Project estimate:

  • Fashion doll, on hand or $1
  • Fine-tip Sharpie, on hand or $1
  • Yellow paper, on hand
  • Lampshade template, free
  • Fringe trim, $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Barbie shoe (or clay), on hand
  • Wooden circle, on hand or $1
  • Electrical components (optional), about $2 and up

Total: about $1 and up

Foam core lamp DIY
I can’t have lamps in my home.  With four young kids in the house, a lamp would just be another thing for me to clean up after it’s broken.  Trust me, I speak from experience.  I do love the soft light from a lamp in the evening, though, so I decided to play around with an idea that had been in my head for a while.  Here is my (almost) unbreakable lamp, made from simple, inexpensive foam core board.
DIY Glowing Lamp

Project estimate:

  • Foam core board, $1
  • Craft knife, on hand
  • Candle holder, on hand or $1
  • String lights, $2
Total:  $3 and up
Step one:  Use a craft knife to cut the foam core board to the desired height of the lamp.  Mine is approximately 7 inches tall.
score lines
Step two:  Divide the board into four sections.  Use the craft knife to cut through the top layer, but do not pierce the paper backing.
trace
Step three:  Draw your design in pencil (you can use a stencil, like I did).
cut
Step four:  Use the craft knife to cut on the lines. Be careful not to cut through the back layer of paper.
remove
Step five: Remove the foam from the cut out shape, leaving the paper backing intact.  When the design is complete, you can clean up the edges a bit with your craft knife.
Step six:  Fold the board to make a square, and glue or tape the edge together.
Place battery operated string lights on the candle holder, and set the foam board lamp over the lights.
Lamp DIY
Isn’t it beautiful?  I love the soft glow of the light through the custom “lamp shade”.  It reminds me of rice paper lanterns.  I think it looks like expensive lighting you’d find in a catalog, and not something you made from dollar foam core board!

DIY Solar Jar Lights

Solar lights are a great way to add a touch of ambiance just about anywhere once the sun goes down.  They come with a little stake for putting them into the ground, but what about those places where a stake isn’t a good option, like on a porch?  Dawn at Creative Cain Cabin discovered that solar lights can be easily fit onto the tops of jars, creating a quick and easy solar lantern that will work just about anywhere!  She used mason jars, but with solar lights coming in so many different sizes and designs these days, you may be able to find jars in your recycling bin that fit well with whatever lights you happen to have available.  And when you’re done using them, they are easily disassembled, so you can reuse the jars and lights for future projects!  [how to make DIY solar jar lights]

Project estimate:

  • Solar light, $1
  • Jar, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

Make a No-Sew Sweater Lamp Shade

Nothing says “cozy” in the winter quite a like a big, chunky cable knit sweater.  So when Barb at The Everyday Home decided to add some seasonal flair to her decor, she decided that dressing a lamp shade in a sweater would be a great way to do it – and she was right!  Using a thrift store sweater she gave the lamp shade a makeover in just minutes.  It’s a great way to cover up a shade that is stained or dented, and when spring come you can remove the sweater just as easily.  [how to make a no-sew sweater lamp shade]

Project estimate:

  • Lamp shade, on hand 0r $1 and up
  • Sweater, on hand or $1 and up
  • Tape or hot glue, on hand

Total:  Free and up!

With cooler temperatures setting in for the season, perhaps you feel the need for a little tropical decor to warm things up a bit.  Or maybe you just really like fruit.  Either way, you’ll get a kick out of this pineapple lamp by Ally at Craft Foxes.  It is cleverly constructed out of plastic spoons!  Imagine how great this would look illuminating your next luau party.  (But why wait for a party?  I also like it for everyday use!)  [how to make a pineapple lamp]

Project estimate:

  • Small lamp, on hand or about $5 and up
  • Plastic bottle, on hand
  • Plastic spoons, $1 and up
  • Yellow paint (if you don’t buy yellow spoons), on hand or $1 and up

With four kids, I go through a lot of milk in my house! Even though I recycle the containers, I thought it would be fun to find a way to repurpose them. When I saw mini vellum lamp shades in the bridal section of a craft store I decided to try to make my own with milk jugs.

DIY Milk Jug Table Light

The plastic isn’t as delicate as vellum, and you can paint it to match your decor or party theme.

Milk Jug Shades
Project Estimate:

  • Plastic milk jugs, on hand
  • Plastic wine glasses, $1 for six
  • Battery-operated tea lights, on hand or $1
  • Paint, on hand
  • Template, free

Total: $1 and up

step one
Step one: Cut the top and bottom off the milk jug. Trace the template onto the plastic and cut. I modified the template so it only had one tab instead of three.

step 2
step 2B

Step two: Paint a design on the plastic. I used a stencil to make simple lines.

stencil milk jug

Step three: Assemble the lamp “shade”, place a tea light in the glass, and top it with the milk jug mini lamp shade.

DIY Milk Jug Tea Lights

Since they’re flameless tea lights, these lamps are safe to use around children. You could paint them any color, or embellish them with ribbon, rhinestones, or trim. You could even decoupage tissue paper onto them. Wouldn’t they make cute table decor for your next get together?
