Throw Pillow Tote Bag

So, you are wandering around a yard sale or thrift store, or past a clearance shelf at a box store, and you see a beautiful throw pillow.  And it’s CHEAP.  Cheaper than what you’d pay for that beautiful fabric it’s made of if you were to head to the craft store to buy it.  But it doesn’t really match your decor.  Or maybe you just don’t need yet another throw pillow (goodness knows that is my husband’s answer).  Next time this happens, don’t walk away – instead, buy it and turn it into a cute tote bag like this one from Amber at Damask Love.  Brilliant!  [how to make a throw pillow tote bag]

Project estimate:

  • Throw pillow, $1 and up
  • Rope, on hand or $1 and up
  • Embroidery floss, on hand or $1 and up
  • Large eyelets or grommets, about $3 and up
  • Fabric glue, on hand or $1 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total: about $4 and up

Sea Shell Picture Frame Tutorial - Want a unique way to display the shells you collect at the beach this summer? Try making this easy picture frame!

Maybe you brought back a collection of shells from a beach vacation.  Or maybe you bought a bag of them at the dollar store.  Either way, they are great for decor projects!  Want a unique way to display them?  Try making this easy picture frame!  You can fill it with your favorite photos, or you can add a fabric background and use them to display even more shells like a shadowbox.

Project estimate:

  • Picture frame, on hand or $1 and up
  • Assorted seashells, $1 and up
  • Pebbles, on hand or $1
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Placemat or fabric for background (optional), on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $1 and up

Remove the glass and backing. Start gluing the shells onto the top of the picture frame. Use a generous amount of glue. I would glue a shell on one side and then the other, but you can design them any way you like. I used the pebbles for another shape.

Using a sponge paint brush, give the entire frame a generous coat of paint and let completely dry before adding additional coat(s). Hold the frame at different angles so that you cover every bit of visible surface with paint. By using a sponge paint brush, you can squeeze in and get every nook and cranny.

Replace the glass and backing to insert a photo or create your own “picture” out of a fabric background and more shells like I did.

Who doesn’t love kid art?  Heather recently took the artwork of her son’s third grade class to a new level with this fun quilt idea!  In addition to being a great classroom activity, you could also have your child do an entire quilt themselves over time.  If you have a large family, each grandchild could make a square to present as a fabulous gift for grandparents!  Or for a smaller-scale project, you could do a table runner, placemat, or wall hanging using the same technique.  See how to make one over at iLoveToCreate.  [how to make a kid art collage quilt]

  • Fabric, on hand or $1 and up
  • Fabric glue, on hand or about $3 and up
  • Fabric markers, on hand or about $2 and up

Give Your Boots a Fuzzy, Metallic Makeover!

I love to wear boots! I bought an inexpensive pair of boots last winter that turned out to be crazy comfortable. Unfortunately, because they *were* cheap, the upper started to fall apart.  Rather than give up on my favorite boots, I decided to update them.  With a little paint and a bit of Cuddle fabric, my boots look new again!

Boot makeover
Project Estimate:

  • Boots – on hand
  • Paint – on hand
  • Rose Cuddle – $2.50 for quarter yard on Etsy
  • Glue – on hand

Total:  $2.50 and up

step 1
Step one:  Clean the boots and paint the lower the color you want.  I used So Soft Fabric paint because it doesn’t crack and is made to work on fabric.

step 2

Step two:  Cut the fabric to fit the cuff of the boot.  I used Cuddle Fabric because it looks great and it doesn’t need to be hemmed.  All I had to do was sew the ends together to make a tube.

step 3step 4b

Step three:  Slide the fabric over the boot.  Use fabric glue or super glue to adhere the fabric to the top of the boots.  I held it in place with mini clothespins.  I also added some glue to the bottom of the fabric to keep it from sliding up when I wear them.

redo boots

I love metallics and bright colors, but you could make yours a lot less flashy than I did by using different colors.  I’ve hardly worn my boots because my youngest two keep stealing them and wearing them around the house.  They love the super soft fabric and asked me to make them some boots, too!
