In addition to the dollar stores, I love to hunt the dollar bins at Michael’s craft stores.  The bins near the register are usually priced $1.50 per item, and there’s another section of the store with items that are arranged by collection and the prices range from $1-5.  These are great places to find little embellishments for projects and fun party favor items.  On my recent shopping trip I found this fun, fluffy wired ribbon.  The item reminded me of clouds, so I decided to use them to spell words to make fun cloud wall art.
diy cloud sign
Project Estimate:
  • Wood plaque – $1
  • Wired ribbon/string – $3
  • Paint – on hand
  • Glue gun – on hand
Total:  $4
supplies

Step one:  Paint the wood blue.  You can find these inexpensive plaques in the unfinished wood section of craft stores, or stock up on holiday signs at Dollar Tree to use for projects like this one.
step 1
Step two:  Twist the fluffy wired string to spell the desired word.  I used “dream” but you could spell a name or anything else you like.  Make sure the word fits on the plaque.
step 2
Step three:  Hot glue the word onto the sign.  Embellish if you like.  I punched some small butterflies from paper to add some color.  I glued a piece of the wired ribbon to the back to make a hanger.

These signs would make adorable nursery decor.  I’m hanging this in my craft room to remind me to let my imagination roam and be creative.  It’s fun to have your head in the clouds, don’t you think?

Yes, pretty things can come from humble materials!  This chandelier by Jamie from The Letter 4 is a similar idea to a faux capiz shell chandelier in its use of wax paper circles, but it has a playful, colorful twist:  crayon shavings!  It’s the perfect addition to a nursery or child’s room, and they can even help by sharpening their crayons.  This reminds me of “stained glass” art that I used to make with wax paper and crayon shavings when I was a kid, and it was always one of my favorite activities!  [how to make a wax paper and crayon chandelier][via Dollar Store Mom]

Project estimate:

  • Wax paper, on hand or $1
  • Lamps shade frame or wire basket, $1 and up
  • Crayon shavings, on hand
  • Iron, on hand
  • Thread, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

My husband rarely lets me walk past the paint section of the store.  See, even if I have no projects in mind and no reason to be paint shopping, I am totally hooked on paint chips.  Some of the colors just speak to me, and I have to grab that little swatch and bring it home.  …Hence the giant stack of paint chips I have accumulated in my desk drawer!  At Kirtsy I found a tutorial for this wonderfully whimsical mobile made using them.  If you don’t have a little one to make it for, I think the idea could be adapted to make a fun capiz-like shade for a hanging light fixture as well! [how to make a paint chip mobile]

Project estimate:

  • Embroidery hoop, on hand or about $2
  • Paint chips, on hand or free
  • Circle punch, on hand
  • Sewing machine, on hand
  • String, on hand

No nursery is complete without a fun mobile to hang from the ceiling.  Dress up your little one’s room with this whimsical mobile design by Natalie of Johnny In A Dress that uses something many households probably have on hand:  Christmas ornaments!  She used clear glass bulbs stuffed with bright bits and bobbles, but ornaments of all kinds would work.  She also used a pair of metal hoops that she painted green as a base; you could easily substitute thrifted embroidery hoops instead.  [how to make a glass ornament mobile]

Project estimate:

  • About a dozen glass bulb ornaments, on hand or $3 and up
  • Two rings, on hand or about $5
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Ribbon, on hand

Lindsay at Living With Lindsay recently revealed the nursery for her soon-to-arrive baby girl, and it’s really fabulous. Among the beautiful touches in the room is a vignette of three frames displaying three-dimensional heirloom baby clothes and shoes. She used larger frames from a craft store, but dollar store frames would work nicely for a variety of smaller items — especially if you think beyond clothing. What precious collection can you display using the 3D framing method? Learn from Lindsay how she did it: [how to frame 3D items]

This is a great method to use for framing sports jerseys, or how about something for dad’s man cave like fishing lures? It’d be pretty to frame some river rocks or seashells, feathers or flowers. What would you frame?

Project Estimate:

  • Frame, $1
  • Batting, $1 or on hand
  • Fabric, on hand or more
  • Items to frame, on hand

Total: $2 and up

Here’s a snazzy dollar store craft we can all get behind: make large scale string art with some strategically-placed thumbtacks (or nails) and a skein of yarn. Large impact for little or no money! The sunny mural in the photo looks like it makes a great focal point for this nursery, and I bet if you used a darker yarn color, it would be even more dramatic. Project found at Prudent Baby. [find out how to make a string art mural]

You could also use jute string for a more rustic look (I know a lot of you love the jute!). You can configure your pins in nearly any shape, so think past the sun shape (which is cool, granted, but it might not be your thing.) How about a large monogram?

Project Estimate:

  • Thumbtacks or nails, on hand or $1
  • Yarn, on hand or $1

Here’s a cute idea for a teacher gift that will cost you very little coin! It would also be super cute in a kid’s room, or as a kiddie birthday gift. You can find a box of crayons and a frame at the dollar store. Print out your background with the teacher’s name, and create a monogram out of crayons, breaking them to get the right widths. Glue crayons on, pop in the frame, and you’re ready to go back to school! You can also substitute other school supplies such as colored pencils or regular #2 pencils. Oh, and don’t forget to check the school supply bins at your local department stores for even better prices on crayons! [click here for original project]

*Update* Lisa from Well How Nice wrote a tutorial with some great tips for getting clean cuts on your crayons. Click here.

Project Estimate:

  • Frame, $1
  • Box of crayons, $1
  • Glue, on hand

Total: $2

(Sidenote, somewhat unrelated but I liked this: Here’s a great thought-provoking article about giving teacher’s gifts, and what teachers REALLY want)

When Amy from Crafty Lil Devil couldn’t find a mobile she liked for her soon-to-be-born baby’s room, she went shopping online. She found one she liked available at The Modern Baby Company for $48. Since that mobile broke Amy’s budget, she decided to get crafty and make her own. Some foam, monofilament wire, and a bent wire hanger later, Amy emerged with her own modern mobile at a fraction of the price. [project here]

You can get packages of plain craft foam at the dollar store (I think it’s about 6-8 sheets per pack), or choose your individual foam colors at a craft store for about $1 a sheet. You can pick up fishing line at the dollar store, and I’m sure you’ve got a spare hanger in your coat closet.

Project Estimate:

  • Craft foam, $1
  • Fishing line, $1 or on hand
  • Wire hanger, on hand

Total: $1 and up

For a savings of $47!

The Masked Mommy has some cute themed crafts that she did to accompany her son’s puppy-themed nursery. She remade some dollar canvases into pup-tastic art that accents the nursery. [instructions here]

She found the canvases in the dollar bins at JoAnn Fabrics (the fabric and craft stores are starting to catch on! Michael’s has dollar bins now, too!), repainted them and added felt cut-out puppies. So cute! You can use whatever you have on hand, too, like pieces of wood, or even dollar store frames. Just customize according to your decor and taste.

Project Estimate:

  • Canvas, $1
  • Paint, on hand
  • Felt, $.25 per color.

Total cost: $1.25 and up
