Halloween Decor

I have to give my five year old credit for this discovery.  One day, she and her cousin went to town with temporary tattoos, applying them to plastic toys, clothing, shoes, etc.  I was surprised to see how well the tattoos adhered to plastic and fabric, and it made me want to try it for myself.  So I did, and I love the possibilities!

 Tattoo on wood
I used a skeleton hand temporary tattoo from Dollar Tree to add some spook appeal to mundane items.  If you’re short on time or crafting skills, here’s an easy, inexpensive way to decorate.
supplies
Project estimate:
  • Temporary tattoos, $1
  • Candle, on hand
  • Wood letter, $1
  • Paint, on hand
Total:  $2
optional
Step one:  Paint the wood letter white.
candle
Step two:  Cut apart the tattoos, and plan where you want to place them.  Peel off the protective plastic film.

Step three:  Place the tattoos on the candle and the wood.  Use a wet washcloth and dampen the tattoo paper backing.  Carefully remove the backing to leave the tattoo.
Tattoo Decor
You can seal the letter with the finish of your choice. I used Glow in the Dark decoupage medium on mine so it emits a faint glow at night.  I love how it looks with the other decor I made.
Decor for Halloween
With all the temporary tattoos available, you could adapt this project for any holiday or event.  Try this out as a fun alternative to decoupage!  What will you craft and create with temporary tattoos?

DIY Twig Monogram Ornament

If you do a lot of knitting and crocheting, you probably have a lot of scrap yarn laying around.  Such was the case for Whitney from 3 Squeezes, who found her crafting space buried under odds and ends of leftover fibers.  Not wanting to throw them away, she instead used them to wrap some monogram Christmas ornaments!  While these look like they were made using twigs, she actually created the bases out of wire, making them much more durable than if they’d been made from bits of wood.  [how to make twiggy monogram ornaments]

Project estimate:

  • Wire, on hand or $1 and up
  • Twine, on hand or $1
  • Yarn scraps, on hand
  • Glue, on hand

Tutorial: Monogram Candle Holder

Wedding season is just around the corner and I would bet someone you know if not yourself is trying to come up with some inexpensive centerpieces. Heather and I had an awesome afternoon brainstorming and crafting together using Martha Stewart products. We came up with the very elegant candle holder which will have all your guests asking, “where you got those beautiful centerpieces?” If they only knew!

Project estimate:

  • Plastic champagne glasses, $1.00 for a 6 pack
  • Martha Stewart punch, on hand
  • Martha Stewart scrapbook paper, on hand
  • Martha Stewart glitter, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Charm or bead, on hand
  • Clear thread or fishing line, on hand
  • White glue, on hand

Total: $1.00 and up

Tutorial: Monogram Candle Holder

Using the punch make two matching pieces to place together. Sandwich two sides together with string in the middle. You will need to add a bead or some type of charm to the base to hold it down when hanging.

Tutorial: Monogram Candle Holder

Place a small amount of glue in the bottom of the cup with the glue gun. Be careful to not get it on the sides of the cup.

Here comes the tricky part. Using a pencil make a small slit in the eraser and put string/thread into it. This will hold it in place to put it in cup. Push end of thread then into the glue and allow to set. Now you have your monogram in place.

Now onto the glitter. Apply a small amount of glue to the rim of the cup. Then cover it with glitter by rolling it in a plate filled with glitter.

Using the same technique glue the base of the cup and glitter it. Once it has dried you can place a punch in the center to put your candle on.

Light your candle and you are ready to have the wedding of your dreams!

When I first saw the picture of this oversized monogram by Diane at In My Own Style, I eagerly scrolled down the post, dying to know her dollar store secrets!  Would you believe that this huge monogram was cut out of foam core board?  Would you believe that it was easy?  The process gets slightly tech-y (she created her design on the computer using image editing software) but it’s fairly basic and her instructions are clear and easy to follow.  (We see some of you doubting your tech skills.  Don’t be afraid!)  And once you’ve created the pattern for your monogram, you can use it over and over again to personalize future projects as well!  [how to make an oversized monogram]

Project estimate:

  • Computer, on hand
  • Monogram enlargement, about $2
  • Foam core board, $1

Total:  about $3

fall patio with monogram

How do you decorate your yard and porch for fall? It can be as easy as adding some pretty seasonal plants, a few pumpkins, and a quickie monogram project for your front door. Adding fall color plants to your garden or decorative containers is a fun and simple way to Find beauty in the Fall.

Inspiration image: Better Homes and Gardens

To get this look:

Potted Fall Plants: Potting plants is a simple process, and you can quickly paint terra cotta planters with a coat of acrylic craft paint and some acrylic sealer (to make them weather resistant). Use a variety of sizes and styles for an eclectic, artsy look.

Monogram: The monogram on the door is a great alternative to a traditional wreath. To make it, cut a letter out of sturdy cardboard or plywood, and then glue on round cuts from dowels (or recycled wine corks).

Pumpkins: I like to shop at my local pumpkin patch for unique heirloom pumpkins to set on my stairs. You can also find some unusual varieties at your local grocery store.

Fall Potted Plant Project

fall color

I found instructions for this simple potting project on the Fall gardening page at Fall plant and feed.

Project Materials:

To Pot Plants:

1. Scoop potting mix into the pot about 1/3 full.

2. Put seedlings or plants into to pot, and fill in extra space with additional potting mix.

3. Give the pot a good watering using the LiquaFeed feeding system.

Liquafeed_Advanced.JPG

The LiquaFeed system sounds great because it takes the guesswork out of feeding plants:

  • No mixing, no measuring, no mess!
  • No more guessing when the plant food is gone–when the bottle empties, feeding is done.
  • Automatically applies plant food at an even rate–no worry of over- or under-feeding.
  • Feeder easily switches between feeding and water-only options.

We’ve featured broken crayon monograms as teacher gifts before, but middle school and high school teachers are less likely to want gifts made with crayons because they don’t use crayons in their classes. Don’t worry, Cara TX has us covered! She created framed monograms for her middle school son’s teachers using items specific to the subjects they teach. For the computer keyboarding teacher, a monogram made of old computer keys, for the gym teacher, a monogram made from whistles, and for other teachers, monograms made of sharpened pencils. When secret stashbuster Caro of Caro’s Thrifty Adventures opened up her magical box of goodies and saw fabric and a zipper she panicked for a moment, since she doesn’t fancy herself much of a seamstress.  She shook it off, got to brainstorming, and came up with this project that incorporated both without requiring her to pick up a needle and thread:  a framed monogram with subtle detailing that makes it quite elegant.  Since she’s an avid paper crafter, she had a bunch of letter stickers and chipboard letters on hand; if you don’t happen to have any in your stash, check out Dollar Tree for stick-on craft foam letters that will give the same dimensional effect.  [how to make a monogram frame]
