No-Sew T-shirt pillow project - dollar store crafts

This week we are bringing you a fun no-sew stenciled pillow tutorial, courtesy of Tulip and their fine stencils and fabric paints, part of the Tulip For Your Home line. Do you have an old t-shirt that you no longer wear? Or maybe you found a stash of colorful t-shirts at the dollar store (I love it when that happens) and you want to create a cute home decor accent. Well, look no further! We’ll teach you how to make a cute stenciled t-shirt pillow – no sewing required!

But first, check out the gorgeous pillow cover we made using Tulip’s NEW Tulip For Your Home goodies — a line of home décor stencils and paints (including large scale stencils and contemporary home decor color paints)!

Leopard & Lips Stenciled Pillow

Dollar store crafts' pretty retro leopard stenciled pillow

I love the unexpected color combination that makes this leopard print très chic! Check out the paint color palette we used, as well as the cool stencils we received:

Tulip project inspiration stencils

I’m loving the copper paint on the blue-grey pillow cover! By the way, the pillow covers are part of the Tulip For Your Home program, so you’ll be able to find them right with the stencils & paint at your local craft store. The stencils are designed to coordinate, and come in different sizes so you can layer them over each other.

Once we made this pillow cover, we couldn’t wait to get busy and do a second project! This is where we show you how to make the no-sew stenciled t-shirt pillow!

No-Sew Stenciled Owl T-shirt Pillow Tutorial

Are you afraid of sewing? Look no further than this cute and easy no-sew pillow project. This is a great tween craft!

No-sew stenciled tshirt pillow tutorial - great tween craft from dollar store crafts!

Project Materials:

  • 1 T-shirt (the larger, the better)
  • 8″ Owl Stencil from Tulip For Your Home
  • Blue Tulip Soft Fabric Paint
  • Tulip Paint Roller
  • An old pillow
  • Freezer Paper
  • Iron

How To Make It:

Stencil your t-shirt with an Owl stencil from Tulip

1. Stencil Your T-shirt:

Prepare your t-shirt by ironing freezer paper to the inside of the t-shirt. (Put the freezer paper plastic side down, and iron on the paper side until freezer paper is stuck to the t-shirt). Turn shirt right-side out (freezer paper will be on the inside).

Spray Tulip Stencil Spray Adhesive lightly on the back of the owl stencil. Place stencil on t-shirt and press in place .

Apply Tulip Soft Fabric Paint to stencil with the Tulip Paint Roller. Remove the stencil to reveal the owl design. Let paint dry up to 1 hour. Clean stencil immediately.

2. Trim and Tie T-shirt

Trim and Tie T-shirt to create a no-sew pillow

Cut t-shirt just below armpits, and cut off waistband hem. Cut sides of t-shirt off.

Cut 2″ notches in the sides of the t-shirt squares, about 1″ apart. Cut a notch in at the corner of the square.

Tie top and bottom t-shirts together to create the pillow without sewing!

Leave a few ties untied and stuff pillow with stuffing (we used the stuffing from an old misshapen pillow we had on hand).

When the pillow is stuffed, tie the last ties until it’s all closed up.

DIY No-sew t-shirt pillow - great tween craft and great way to recycle your old tshirts!

make an easy fall leaf pillow

One of the quickest ways to add a little seasonal cheer to a room is with throw pillows. They are easy to make, inexpensive, and often an be whipped up in a matter of minutes! Such is the case with this leaf pillow by Amy at Positively Splendid. Using a large felt leaf decoration from the dollar store, she created a simple pillow that has a nifty secret: an envelope-style back! This means that if you use a pillow form to fill it, you can remove the covering much like a sham and replace it with a different cover when the seasons change. This way, you can store a whole collection of pillows to display throughout the year in very minimal space! [how to make a fall leaf throw pillow]

Project estimate:

  • Felt leaf, $1
  • Fabric, on hand or $1 and up
  • Pillow insert or polyfill, on hand or about $3
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread, on hand

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. Dollar Tree is a candy store of Christmas decorations. The wall of Santa hats draws my eye every trip. I just had to find something clever to do with them and a pillow seemed like just the right craft for these cute hats.

Tutorial: Santa Hat Accent Pillow (via dollarstorecrafts.com)

Project estimate:

  • Two Santa hats, $2
  • Poly filling, on hand or about $3
  • Red material for base, on hand or $1 and up
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

Tutorial: Santa Hat Accent Pillow (via dollarstorecrafts.com)

Remove both seams on one of the Santa hats. You’ll need to cut the ball off the top to remove it all the way. Cut as close to the ball as possible as to not lose to much material. With the second Santa hat only remove the seam on one side. This will eliminate having to sew both sides again because you only need one side free. Once finished removing the seams pin the single sided hat the the sides of the other hat. This will create a cone shape. Pin/sew all the way to the top of the hat. To help with putting it back together refer to the side you did not remove. This will help to know you are sewing on the correct side.

Tutorial: Santa Hat Accent Pillow (via dollarstorecrafts.com)

After all sides are sewn together you will take the extra red fabric and cut it to fit the base of your hats. Dollar Store Santa hats vary in size therefore you will need to cut it to fit your project. Sew two of the side and leave the remaining side open for stuffing. Stuff the hat with the desired amount of filling. Once your hat is filled pin the remaining side in place. You may hand stitch it or use your sewing machine. I hand stitched it. It was very quick and easy. After you have completed sewing on the base work the filling around to ensure it is consistent through your pillow. Now you’ve completed a fun Santa hat accent pillow for any space in your house that needs a little extra Christmas cheer!

Make a spray painted burlap pillow

Some things just have an autumn-y feel to them.  Things like leaves, gourds, and one of our favorite fabrics, burlap.  It has a rustic look that is perfect for harvest time!  Colleen at Just Paint It came up with an easy way to incorporate burlap into her fall decor by using a dollar store felt leaf as a stencil and turning the resulting design into a pillow.  Her version isn’t even sewn; if you aren’t comfortable with your sewing skills, a little hot glue or some tape is sufficient to hold everything in place through the season.  If you’re not a burlap fan any fabric will work – Colleen even suggests using a painter’s drop cloth as a fabric source.  You can also use the leaf to stencil all kinds of coordinating items!  What else would you stencil with spray painted leaves?  [how to make a spray painted burlap pillow]

Project estimate:

  • Burlap (or other fabric), on hand or $1 and up
  • Felt leaf, $1
  • Spray paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Pillow form or stuffing, on hand or $1 and up
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread, on hand

When Amanda from Wit & Whistle came across a pretty linen pillow with the lyrics to “You Are My Sunshine” printed on it at Vivaterra, she was drawn to it.  There were two things that she wasn’t too keen on though:  the choice of words (cute, but not her favorite) and the price.  ($159 for a throw pillow??)  Instead she made her own version, recreating the look for a whole lot less.  I love the quote she chose.  In fact, I think I like her DIY pillow better than it designer counterpart!  [how to make a stenciled quote pillow]

Remember that silk screen kit that I used to make screen printed Christmas cards?  I’ve been having so much fun with it, and I just can’t stop printing designs on things around the house!  Most recently I printed a fleur de lis motif on a pre-made pillow cover that I picked up at Dollar Tree, and I love how it turned out.  The pillow cover is stuffed with an old pillow that used to match my decor, but since we’ve gotten new furniture, it no longer really fit in the room.  Now it looks just perfect sitting at the end of my couch!  I wrote about it over at Decor Hacks, and I even shot a video to go with it!  Head over there to check it out, and if you are a YouTuber, make sure you subscribe to the Decor Hacks channel.  [how to make a no-sew silkscreened throw pillow]

Project estimate:
