Make Burlap and Lace Topiary Trees

I’ve been a little bit burlap-obsessed lately, and suddenly it’s showing up all over in my decor.  And not just by itself, either; I have been head-over-heels for the combination of burlap and lace together.  Over at Mrs. Greene I made these springy burlap topiaries out of foam cones and glass candlesticks, which I intended as decorations for spring but like so much that I think I’ll leave them out year-round.  If burlap and lace aren’t your thing, you could also substitute other fabrics and embellishments to make your own version of this project!  [how to make burlap and lace topiary trees]

Project estimate:

  • Foam cone, $1
  • Burlap, on hand or $1 and up
  • Lace and/or ribbon, on hand or $1 and up
  • Rhinestones, buttons, and other embellishments, on hand or $1
  • Glass candlestick, $1
  • Glass paint (optional), on hand or about $2 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

mardi gras beads coasters

Mardi Gras is nearly here, so time to shop at the dollar store for your Mardi Gras beads needs. And then get crafty! Over at Rust & Sunshine, Michelle created a quick and easy coaster project that uses Mardi Gras beads and shows them off to the greatest advantage. Use these coasters for your Fat Tuesday party, or for just a little bit of bling in your everyday bar decor. [how to make mardi gras beaded coasters]

If you want a different look, spray paint the beads first. If you spray them white, they will have a nice romantic cottage/Shabby Chic look.

Project Estimate:

  • Felt, on hand or about $.33 a sheet
  • Mardi gras beads, one strand per coaster, 8 for $1
  • Fabric glue, on hand

Total: $1 and up (or FREE if you already have a stash of beads)

When Belrossa came across a whole bunch of canning jar lids at a thrift store for a nickel each, she knew she was onto something good.  She’s used them for all kinds of things, most recently a fabulously shabby chic wreath!  It’s one of the easiest-to-make wreaths you will ever see, making a big statement with minimal effort.  I love the mix of finishes and the bits of rust, but if you’re into a more clean-and-modern look, a little spray paint would give it a completely different style.  [how to make a canning jar lid wreath]

Project estimate:

  • Canning jar lids, about $1.50 and up
  • String, twine, or rope, on hand or $1

Total:  about $1.50 and up

Flower-Monogram

A month or so ago, I commented that I have no idea what to do with the aisle of faux flowers at the dollar store. A couple readers raised their hands and said they have lots of ideas for silk flowers, and one of those readers was Paula of JC’s Loft. So, today I’m happy to share Paula’s great idea with you: making a monogram wreath. Everyone loves wreaths! And monograms! So thanks Paula, and everyone else check out her blog!

Hi! I’m Paula and I am a fake flower junkie…it’s a sickness really.  So when I read Heather’s post  on the Spooky Witch Hat Flower Arrangement where she joked about having someone volunteer to do a guest post on fake flowers I thought…that’s ME that’s ME.  Nobody loves fake flowers as much as I do, ha!

I’m grinning ear to ear because I’m posting here : )  YAY I’m excited for the opportunity!  I love Dollar Store Crafts and always walk away inspired and wanting to RUN to the Dollar Store : )

Here are a few items I handmade and sold on etsy using fake flowers:
Monogram Wreath
Damask Flower Basket
Floral Monogram Urn Centerpiece
Mini cake

Today I’m going to show you how to make a floral monogram wreath!

Project Materials:

  • 20 gauge craft wire, $1 (or metal hanger from closet)
  • Wire cutters, on hand or $1
  • Silk flowers, $3
  • Floral tape (optional), on hand or $1

Total: $3 and up

Note about supplies: I got my 20 gauge craft wire in a 30 pack from Wal-Mart, and I got the silk flowers at Dollar Tree. I had wire cutters  and floral tape on hand, but you can get them at Dollar Tree, and they’re a great tool to have on hand for a variety of craft projects. I used $3 worth of silk flowers, but the quantity you need will depend on the size of your monogram.

Step 1.

Take 4 pieces of craft wire and wrap floral tape around them from the top to the bottom.  Repeat this step. (To do without purchasing floral tape use 1 piece of craft wire and wrap around 3 pieces of wire or untwist a metal hanger and skip to step 3) If you want a larger monogram repeat this step another time or two!

Step 2.

Take your two clusters of wire and twist the bottoms together to form one long wire.

Step 3.

Shape your wire into desired monogram and set aside.

Step 4.

Take a new piece of wire and cut in 3 inch pieces.  You need one 3 inch piece of wire for each flower you have.

Step 5.

Take 1 piece of 3 inch wire and use wire cutter to bend the tip into a small circle.

Step 6.

Take a flower head and push wire from step 5 into the center of it with straight end first and curved tip on top.

Now you have a flower with a wire stem.

Step 7.

Wrap the wire stem onto your monogram.  I like to start at the bottom and work my way up.

When you are finished the back of your monogram will look like this:

Now you have a Monogram Wreath to place on your Mantel:

Hang on your front door for custom decor:

Attach dowel rods and decorate a potted plant or by your mailbox:

Hope you enjoyed my tutorial!  Thanks to Heather for the opportunity…..Paula?

You’re gonna be mad at me when you see how I made these because you don’t have these things in your stash and you pledged to bust your stash in April. I went to the dollar store on March 31st looking for more hooks so I could make more of these, but they were OUT, so I’m mad too!

Let me just start by saying I’m totally jealous of those people who have design sense. I like to make stuff, but rarely does good taste come into it (I KNOW! I’m one of those crafters who give us a bad name). My style is so not shabby chic (as much as I wish it was, because shabby chic techniques work really well for dollar store makeovers!), but this project might just help me learn to incorporate some shabby into my life. This was so fun and simple, and I love how it turned out!

I’ve been on the lookout for hooks. A single hook at the home improvement store is about $3.50. You can get a row of about four hooks at Target for around $12-15. I can’t believe simple coat hooks are that expensive! Then I found these at the dollar store:

Plastic Spongebob hook (hideous!) and a verdigris iron house number. (Note: these are plastic, and won’t hold anything very heavy like the more expensive hooks at the home improvement store will, but they are sturdy enough for light use.) I wanted to put them together to make something whimsical and pretty, like they might sell here, but I didn’t have a clear idea in my head about how to take the hook from Spongebob to fab.

Project Materials:

  • Plastic hook, $1
  • Acrylic paint, on hand or $.50
  • Faux metal embellishment tags, $1
  • House number or other embellishment, on hand or $1

Total: $2 and up

To Make:

Step 1: Paint the Spongebob off that hook! I used Antique White craft acrylic paint (this paint has been getting a huge workout at my house lately, and I really like it!). Give it two coats, if necessary.

Step 2:  Paint the embossed metal stickers with the same color of paint. When they dry, you can antique them with brown paint or green (to simulate a verdigris effect). To expose some of the metal, gently scrape paint off the sticker with your fingernail.

Step 3. Stick the painted stickers on the fully dry painted hook.

(Optional) Step 4: Glue house number (or other embellishment) to the hook.

Craft Foam Ball Owl: $1 and up

Dawn made this adorable owl from a craft foam ball, felt, and googly eyes. You should be able to make a bunch for a buck if you have felt and glue on hand (if you don’t have googly eyes, you should, but you can also sub felt cutouts for eyes). This would be a fun slumber party or scout troop project. Check out the tutorial over at Dawnypoo.

Owl Purse Tutorial: $1 and up

This cute owl purse tutorial is available at A Wednesday Afternoon. Chance are you have fabric in your stash to make this cutie. You can also find a bunch of adorable owl project ideas here. I found it via Reader Crafty Little Beana’s blog. Click here for the tutorial.

Cute Kitty Votives: $1 and up

Meli at Mother Mary Machine made these cute votives using some cute magazine images, mod podge, and nail polish! This is a great way to use up old nail polish colors. Admit it, you have a drawer-full that you aren’t going to use on your piggies anymore! This is a simple craft, and I bet tweens would get a kick out of this one. You can use battery-operated tea lights to make it safe for bedrooms, or just use the votive holders as catch-all cups for rings, hair things, or whatever. Check out the tutorial at Mother Mary Machine.

Glazed Birdies: $1 each

I just can’t get enough of the dollar store birdie makeovers. Find out how to mix up glaze for your shabby chic-style makeover here at Decor Mamma.

French Quail: $1

Lemondrops and Violets remade one of our favorite birdies into this adorable French Quail! Anyone else doing anything fun with birdies? Get the info on this makeover here.

I love this idea for adding a little special something to a humdrum frame! Adding a beaded necklace can make a plain frame into a special one. Disney, the genius behind Ruffles and Stuff, shared this idea on her blog last weekend. She also shows you how to make the cute butterflies – perfect for a little spring decor. [how to make a shabby beaded frame]

Another thing you can do to make your frame even more shabby chic is to antique it after you’re done painting it. You can use faux technique glaze (like you see a lot at Shanty2Chic), or just paint a quick watery coat of a brown craft acrylic paint (raw umber is a good color for this), and then wipe it off. It will leave darker paint in the creases where you can’t quite remove the paint, and it instantly adds age and character to anything.

Project Estimate:

  • Frame, $1
  • Beaded necklace, $1
  • Paint, on hand
  • Glaze, on hand

Total: $2
