3 Creepy Headband Ideas that take 15 minutes or less to make

Want to dress up for Halloween in an understated way? How about a fun Halloween fascinator headband? I have created three different looks for the Live.Craft.Love blog: A creepy spider, a fanciful bat headband, and a bird’s nest. Each of these headbands takes less than 15 minutes to make! Find out more: [3 Halloween Headbands]

Cute DIY Halloween treat buckets

I also created three different custom treat buckets for Halloween: a bat, an owl, and a ballerina basket. These were a lot of fun to make – I think the bat is my favorite! Find the instructions for these treat buckets: [3 Halloween Treat Buckets]

wedding fascinator idea

Do you YouTube? I have a Dollar Store Crafts channel, and I like to upload videos about what I bought at the dollar store, as well as video tutorials. If you are a fan of videos, you should head over and subscribe to my channel. I just posted a new video about a recent trip to Dollar Tree — on YouTube these shopping videos are called “haul videos.”

And if you don’t enjoy watching videos, I pulled a couple of highlights from my shopping trip for you to check out.

First up, I bought some little mini wedding dresses I found in the wedding section. They were marked down (just $.50 each), so I bought a few with the idea that I could use them to make fascinators. If you’re not familiar with fascinators, they are miniature hats or hairpieces that became famous earlier this year during the Royal Wedding. You can use barrettes or headbands to make a fanciful headpiece to wear. I want to use these little dresses as a beginning for a fascinator project! Maybe I can dye the dresses to add a little color.

bamboo mats

Another thing that always catches my eye at the dollar store are these colorful bamboo place mats. I just love them. I haven’t created a project using them yet, but I am thinking it would be fun to cover a drum-style lampshade with them. I keep looking at thrift stores for the lampshades, but haven’t been lucky enough to find one yet. I think I’ll have to break down and go to Ikea, because I know they have affordable drum lampshades.

What can you think of to do with the bamboo mats? And do you have a YouTube channel? Have you made your own dollar store haul videos?

Super Secret Stashbuster Mich L. in LA strikes again with her tenth project! This is a great idea for those dollar store metal headbands (6 for $1!): create sliding ornaments for the headbands so you can change them out whenever you want. Mich L. shows you how to make the slidey thing so you can make as many as you want, for infinite variety in this very current trend in accessorizing! I said this at CROQ zine, but I’ll say it again: I think it’d be cool to make a bird’s nest headband as a sort of nod to the bad hair day. After I wrote that, I found a bird’s nest fascinator by Outi at Outsapop, so I guess I don’t have to actually make one since someone else already did it for me! [click here for the changeable headband tutorial]

Use any cool little doodad in your stash to make this awesome headband!

Project Estimate:

  • Metal headbands, 6 for $1
  • Recycled plastic, on hand
  • Hole punch, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Trinkets, on hand

Total: $.12 each

Apparently we haven’t been ambitious enough with our dollar store crafts because this beautiful bit of millinery was made completely with stuff from the dollar store, and the base of the hat is something you would NEVER imagine. Craftster user volcano created this retro-style floral hat out of several garlands from the floral section, and used a trash can lid as the base! [click here for the original project]

Of course this hat isn’t for everyone, but I have seen hats (or fascinators) in similar styles all over the cool kids’ blogs. I really wanted to post this to remind you that you can do ambitious projects with inexpensive supplies.

Project Estimate:

  • Plastic trash can with a round top/flip lid, $1
  • 5 floral garlands, $5
  • A pack of cloth napkins, $1
  • Sewing stuff, glue, on hand

Total: $7
