DIY Dollar Headband

Have you seen the adorable fabric Valentine hearts at Dollar Tree?  After Rhonda posted about them here, I had to have a few!  These are so well made and a total steal at six per pack for $1.  They can be used in many ways, and here are two quick ideas that would make for fun gifts or just for you to wear on Valentine’s day.

valentine hair clip

Project estimate:

  • Puffy hearts, $1 for 6
  • Headband, on hand or $1
  • Hair clip, on hand or $1
  • Craft feathers, on hand or $1
  • Felt, on hand
  • Glue gun, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

supplies

To make the hair clip, glue feathers to the back of the heart.  Place a small piece of felt behind the clip, and glue the heart onto it.

valentine hair pinstep 2

For the headband, simply hot glue the hearts in alternating colors onto the headband.  For a more finished look, glue a strip of felt behind the hearts.

how to

I’ve already had people ask me where I bought my cute headband!  This is such a quick, easy project that you can easily make in under 10 minutes.  I think they’d make cute Valentine gifts, but make sure to save at least one for yourself to wear on the 14th!

Aki at Mined Strawberry is one of our favorite dollar store jewelry designers.  This time she’s whipped up some bling for your locks!  By cleverly making a clear base to hold them in place, she managed to add entire clusters of rhinestones to the ends of bobby pins, resulting in some seriously cute hair accessories.  They would make great stocking stuffers for the fashion-minded ladies on your holiday gift giving list this year!  [how to make gem cluster hair pins]

I bought a pretty sequin rose ponytail holder at my local dollar store knowing I could re-invent it into something way cooler – though I wasn’t quite sure what that was at the time. A few visits later when I spotted sets of headbands including some black and silver glittery ones, I knew just want I wanted to do!

Project estimate:

  • Sequin ponytail holder, $1
  • 2 skinny black glitter headbands, $2
  • 1 skinny silver glitter headband, on hand (came with the black headbands!)
  • Hot glue gun and glue

Total: $3

how to make a statement piece headband supplies

These headbands came in a pack of 4 and included one each of a metallic silver, metallic gold, black glitter and silver glitter headbands. If you buy 2 packs, you’ll get the 2 black headbands and 1 silver headband you need. They say they are for girls but they fit my (large) adult head just fine.

black glitter headbands

Step 1: Remove headbands from packaging and glue the two black ones together as shown to make a wider headband. Once the glue is set, add the silver headband, centering it between the two black ones and securing it with hot glue.

Step 2: Gently peel up the circle of felt holding the elastic to the back of the rose. Try to keep the felt circle intact-you’ll need it for the next step! Of course, you want to keep the rose intact as well. Discard the elastic.

Step 3: Use hot glue to adhere the three-part headband to the back of the rose. Add some extra glue to the side of the headband which lays on your hair and press the felt circle down for extra stability.

Once the glue is set, you’re ready to go!

Tutorial: Spring Hair Picks

My daughter has blonde hair all the way to her bottom.  I’m always looking for cute ways to put her hair up quickly!  I made these hair picks for her and am excited to see her reaction when she gets them in her Easter basket.

Tutorial: Spring Hair Picks

Project estimate:

  • Chop sticks , $1
  • Flowers, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total: $1 and up

Tutorial: Spring Hair Picks

First pick what you would like to put on your hair stick.  I chose flowers because I was making these for my 10 year old daughter.  You can use beads, glitter, anything!

Place a small amount of glue on the end of the stick then place decoration on it.  That’s it.  Super easy and very versatile.

Have fun creating new looks and coming up with ideas on how to use these throughout different seasons.

Imagine this scene:  You’re running late, trying to get your hair done and makeup on, and you were supposed to be out the door five minutes ago.  In your half-panicked rush, you completely forget that your flat iron is still hot and you toss it in the cupboard.  Later that day, you make the horrifying discovery that the hot iron made contact with a bottle of mouthwash, the melted plastic resulting in a catastrophic mess.  Sounds like something that might happen to you?  Here’s an easy solution that will prevent such an incident from happening!  Jami from Creative Juices transformed a pot holder into a cute, practical sleeve for holding her flat iron.  It would also work for holding a curling iron!  [how to make a flat iron or curling iron holder]

Project estimate:

  • Pot holder, $1
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread, on hand

Total:  $1

Chances are if someone handed you a package of ponytail holders, the kind with the little plastic balls, you would associate them with little girls in pigtails.  Would you ever guess that they could be used to make grown-up, sophisticated jewelry?  Shannon from Madigan Made used a set of them to create a beaded necklace with an ombre color scheme; since the holes in the “beads” are drilled off-center, they automatically create a lovely zig-zag pattern when strung!  She also used sandpaper to give some of the shiny beads a matte finish, adding even more visual interest to a piece that makes a big statement on a small budget!  [how to make a ponytail holder necklace]

Project estimate:

  • Ponytail holders, $1 and up
  • Sandpaper (optional), on hand
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1

Total:  $1 and up

Every year after the gifts have been ripped open and it’s time to clean up the aftermath, I feel terrible about throwing away all of the pretty ribbons and bows.  If you’re looking for a crafty excuse to squirrel some of those package embellishments away, you could use them to make a headband like this one by Lucinda from Sew Wrong.  You could also wrap a wide plastic dollar store bangle to make a matching bracelet!  [how to make a gift wrap headband]

  • Headband, on hand or $1
  • Ribbons and bows, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand

I’m a big fan of dressing up my Christms gift wrapping with “extras” in place of traditional, disposable package toppers like ribbons and bows.  Often I use ornaments for package embellishments, but this felt poinsettia hair clip by Rose at Projectville would be another great option.  Or, if the recipient isn’t a hair clip wearer, turn it into an ornament instead by adding a string or ribbon in place of the clip.  They are perfect for embellishing any number of holiday projects!  The tutorial includes a link to the pattern for the petals, making the project much more easy-peasy than it looks.  [how to make a felt poinsettia hair clip]

These hair sticks actually caught my attention because I have a whole bunch of plastic eyeballs laying around, left from last year’s glowing mad scientist jars.  Shala from Don’t Eat the Paste made them out of what look to be the exact same eyeballs that have been staring at me from a bowl on my computer desk, waiting to be turned into something new.  Make them even fancier by spray painting the chopsticks before attaching the eyeballs to the ends.  Be sure to check out Shala’s tips for drilling the holes, and always remember to think about safety when it comes time to use power tools!  [how to make eyeball hair sticks]

  • Plastic eyeballs, $1

  • Clay, on hand or  $1
  • Drill, on hand
