Last week I showed you how to make a faux rusty bracelet using hardware.  I’m using pieces from this kit I found in the toy section at Dollar Tree, and teaching you how you can make FOUR different pieces of jewelry by using this single $1 box.  Last week’s piece was a bit grungy, this week I’m going with a more sleek look.

supplies
Since Independence Day is around the corner, I went with the colors of the American flag for this bracelet.  You could easily change it to different colors to match an outfit or maybe to represent your favorite team at the World Cup.  (Go Team USA!)
Hardware Jewelry Bracelet
Project estimate:
  • Metal toy kit, $1
  • Jewelry glue or Super Glue, on hand
  • Embossing ink and powders, on hand
  • Chain, on hand
Total:  $1

step 1
Step one:  Use 10 of the hex nuts from the box.  Glue them together so that the top row has 4 hex nuts, the next 3, etc.  Let it dry.
step 2
Step two:  Apply embossing powder to the hardware.  I did this by using an embossing ink pen and coloring on the hex nuts.

step 3

Step three: Add the embossing powder to the piece.  Shake off the excess, and heat it to melt the powder onto the metal.  Let it cool and don’t touch it yet, as the metal will be extremely hot!

Step four:  Add a chain to the charm after it has cooled.  I used an old bracelet.  This would also make a pretty pendant for a necklace.  With the added color, it hardly looks like hardware anymore!

Two pieces of jewelry down, two more to go!  Check back next week to learn how to make the last two pieces of hardware jewelry in this series.

bracelet hardware DIY

I’ve noticed a lot of great looking jewelry being made with hardware.  I like the rugged, steampunk look of this unconventional jewelry, and wanted to give it a try.  I found several interesting building kits in the toy section at Dollar Tree, and they were full of interesting hardware.  I bought one of the kits (to build a dog?) and started playing with the pieces.

supplies

So far I have come up with four designs using materials from this single $1 box of hardware!  I’ll be sharing each project with you, so check back each week to learn how to make more jewelry from hardware.  Let’s get started with our first project:  a “rusty” metal bracelet.

Jewelry projects
Project estimate:

  • Toy kit, $1
  • Rhinestones, on hand
  • Jewelry or super glue, on hand
  • Embossing ink and powder, on hand or $4 and up
  • Jewelry chain, on hand
Total:  $1 and up

step 1
Step one:  Press an embossing ink pad on the metal piece, and sprinkle embossing powder on it.  (I used a distressed powder from Tim Holtz to create a rust effect.)  Gently shake off the excess powder.

step 2

Step two:  Use a heat tool to emboss the powder onto the metal.  Be careful not to touch the metal as it will be very hot.  Let it cool.

step 3

Step three:  Super glue three rhinestones onto the metal.

DIY Hardware bracelet

Step four:  Add a chain to make a bracelet.

I had wanted to make something more rugged for my boys to wear, but liked it so much that I added the bling and kept it for myself.  You could glue stones, or leave it as is, for a different look.  As I mentioned earlier, I have three more projects you can make from this one dollar store kit, so check back to see what I make next!

Happy Earth Day!  While today is a day to focus on our environment and how we can improve it,  I think a lot of us budget crafters are environmentally conscious everyday.  Dollar Store Crafts regularly features ideas for ways to turn unwanted items into something functional, and this project is no exception!

DIY bracelet

To make these knotted bracelets, I used my children’s old clothing.  I always donate my kid’s clothes to charity, but some items, like these leggings and jeans, were so ripped and worn that there was no way to salvage them.  Rather than tossing them, I cut them up to make some pretty accessories for spring and summer!

denim bracelet diy

Project estimate:

  • Worn clothes, on hand
  • Needle and thread, on hand
  • (Optional) Kumihimo findings, $2

Total:  Free to $2

fabric strips
Step one:  Cut the fabric into 1/2 inch strips.  You will need 4 strips per bracelet.  The length will vary based on how large or small you want your bracelet to be.  Pull the strips so that they begin to curl or fray as desired.

Know Instructions

Step two:  Put two strips together and make a loop as pictured in box 1 of the photo instructions.  Continue as shown in the image.

pull

Step three:  Pull the ends gently to make the “knot”.

finish

Step six:  Join the ends in your hand.  Cut a piece of fabric and wrap it around the ends.  Sew it in place to hold the bracelet.

The cotton fabric bracelet is very stretchy, so I can easily pull it on and off.  The denim fabric does not have as much “give”, so I had to use clasps.

denim bracelet

I crimped the findings on the ends of the denim, and added the clasps with jump rings.

clasp

Aren’t they pretty?  Think of all the fun color and pattern combinations you could make!  This would be a fun way to keep a favorite shirt or blanket close, or even a great way to remember someone who is no longer with you by using their clothing.  Even if the material doesn’t have special meaning, it’s still a great way to recycle and get your craft on!
