Make Burlap and Lace Topiary Trees

I’ve been a little bit burlap-obsessed lately, and suddenly it’s showing up all over in my decor.  And not just by itself, either; I have been head-over-heels for the combination of burlap and lace together.  Over at Mrs. Greene I made these springy burlap topiaries out of foam cones and glass candlesticks, which I intended as decorations for spring but like so much that I think I’ll leave them out year-round.  If burlap and lace aren’t your thing, you could also substitute other fabrics and embellishments to make your own version of this project!  [how to make burlap and lace topiary trees]

Project estimate:

  • Foam cone, $1
  • Burlap, on hand or $1 and up
  • Lace and/or ribbon, on hand or $1 and up
  • Rhinestones, buttons, and other embellishments, on hand or $1
  • Glass candlestick, $1
  • Glass paint (optional), on hand or about $2 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

Hellooooooooo all you Dollar tree crafter peeps!  My name is Debbie and you can find me over at Debbiedoo’s, where I craft lots of budget friendly home decor ideas.  I love all things burlap, spray paint, Mod Podge and  – this goes without saying, but I will – I love Dollar tree!  Today, I am sharing how to make a dollar store Valentine candy dish.  Easy peasy as I always say!

Project estimate:

  • Glass plate, $1
  • Candlestick, $1
  • Tissue paper, on hand or $1
  • Sparkle Mod Podge, on hand or about $5

Total: about $2 and up

First trace your clear plate on the tissue paper to size the plate.  Then, Mod Podge the bottom of the plate as shown.  I used sparkle Mod Podge, though you could always substitute regular Mod Podge if that is what you have on hand.

Adhere the tissue paper gently to the bottom and smooth out wrinkles.  (Ahh if only we could apply this to our faces!)  I then hot glued the little plate on top of the glass candlestick.

You now I have a cute valentine candy dish.

As you can see I glittered up the candle stick, in this case I used both sparkle Mod Podge and some diamond dust.

Spooky Crystal Ball Candlesticks

These spooky crystal ball candlesticks are one of the coolest, most original Halloween DIY ideas I have seen this season!  I’m seriously amazed at Bev from Flamingo Toes, who came up with the project.  I especially love how she used a variety of different styles of candlesticks, gathered from yard sales and thrift shops, painting them to make them into an eclectic but matching set.  She even teamed up with The Graphics Fairy to create a set of printables that make it easy for you to make a set of them for yourself!  [how to make spooky crystal ball candlesticks]

Project estimate:

  • Candlesticks, $1 and up
  • Clear glass bulb ornaments, $1 and up
  • Spray paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Candle, on hand
  • Inkjet transparency film, about $6 and up
  • Printable template and images, free
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  about $8 and up

Make a Wicker Cake Stand

Wicker is one of those classic looks that I don’t think will ever go out of style!  If you are a wicker lover, then you will absolutely fall in love with this cake stand idea from Diane at In My Own Style.  The use of wicker gives it a very picnic-y feel that is perfect for outdoor entertaining, and it brings an element of fanciness to a spread while still being casual enough for everyday occasions.  (It’s so easy to make that it would be great as a last-minute hostess gift as well!)  [how to make a wicker cake stand]

Make Scrubby Valentine Votives

One of my favorite things about dollar store crafting is seeing the innovative ideas people come up with for making things out of all kinds of unusual items.  These Valentine votive holders from Mrs. Polly Rogers are one of those projects that make me say, “she made that out of what?!”  The pretty, shiny, glitzy material you see dressing up these candle holders comes from deconstructed dish scrubbers!  (Insert sounds of shock and awe here.)  Now she’s got me wondering what else I could dress up with them.  I’ll never look at those little scrubbies the same way again!  [how to make scrubby Valentine votives]

Project estimate:

  • Dish scrubbers, $1
  • Sauce bowls, 4/$1
  • Glass candlesticks, $1
  • Beads, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand
  • Votive or tea light candles, on hand or $1

Total:  $3 and up

what to buy at the dollar tree for your wedding

Wedding season is almost upon us once again!  Are you or anyone you know preparing for the Big Day?  Wedding crafts are among the most popular category of dollar store crafts; when planning a wedding on a budget (and who isn’t these days?) even those who’ve never crafted a day in their lives pick up their glue guns and DIY as much as possible in the name of saving money.  We’ve rounded up some of our favorite wedding-related dollar store crafts.  Wondering what kinds of things you should look for at the dollar store for your wedding crafts?  All of these crafts involve items you can find at Dollar Tree.

[Tissue Paper]

[Balloons]

balloon paper lanterns

[Tissue Paper Balloon Lanterns by Kleas]

If you’re looking for an economical, DIY alternative to store-bought paper lanterns, try this easy idea incorporating balloons and tissue paper.  The resulting papier-mache-like lanterns can be customized easily by using tissue paper in your wedding colors.

[White Wedding Favor Boxes]

[Heart Favor Boxes by Shindig Parties To Go]

This project was originally made for Valentine’s Day, but it translates well to weddings!  Using colorful scrapbook paper, plain white favor boxes are transformed into festive heart favor boxes!  Replace the colors and embellishments however you see fit to make them match your wedding theme; the technique remains the same.

[All-Occasion Gift Wrap]

[Fruit Drop Candies]

[Extra Large Star Party Favors by The Cheese Thief]

These origami star favors are super economical; just a few rolls of wrapping paper is all you need to make enough for all of your guests!  Tuck hard candies or other treats inside as a special surprise for the recipients.

[Clear Cello Wrap]

[Cellophane Origami Star Garland by The Cheese Thief]

Once you’ve mastered folding origami stars, grab a roll of cello wrap and some string to make this crystal-like star garland.  Hang them alongside clear Christmas lights for a little bit of elegant sparkle!

[Silk Roses]

[Round Candle Holders]

[Rose Votive Candle Holders by Two Crafty Mules]

Don’t know what to do with all of those silk flowers in the craft department at Dollar Tree?  If you can find roses in the right colors for your wedding, make rose votive holders!  Look for glass candle holders that are rounded to make a nicely-shaped flower.

[Serving Trays]

[Taper Candle Holders]

[Colorful Tiered Trays by Joy’s Hope]

Tiered trays are one of the most popular varieties of dollar store craft.  This variation, assembled from serving trays and candlesticks, uses spray paint to add a pop of color.  (If you use paint that is not food-safe, make sure you do not place food items directly on the trays; use a barrier such as cocktail napkins or cupcake liners to keep your guests safe!)

[Crepe Paper Streamers]

[Crepe Paper Flower Corsages by Under the Table and Dreaming]

Let’s not forget one of the handmade goodies you will need for members of your wedding party and for distinguished guests: corsages!  While crepe paper streamers are a party decorating staple, fashioning them into frilly flowers is a twist you might not have considered!

What are your favorite wedding crafts using dollar store items?

Would you ever guess that these chic candlesticks are made from recycled soup cans?  I’ve made quite a few crafts using empty cans over the years, but most of them come out looking like, well, empty cans.  Decorated cans, albeit, but still recognizably from the recycling bin.  That’s why this idea is so fab!  Heather at Me Making Do came up with a great way to disguise the cans; she wrapped them in pieces of straw mat to give them a completely different look and texture.  She used a straw beach mat that she had on hand, but Dollar Tree usually has straw placemats available that will work just as well.  The wooden blocks she used for the ends of the candlesticks are actually fence post toppers that she found at the home improvement store.  Her blog is  treasure trove of recycled crafting ideas, so make sure you stop and take a look around!  [how to make recycled tin can candlesticks]

Project estimate:

  • Empty tin can(s), on hand
  • Straw placemat, $1
  • Decorative wood blocks, about $4
  • Ribbon and other embellishments, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
