Have you seen the long, skinny scarves that Dollar Tree had for St. Patrick’s Day the last couple of years?  I realized that they are absolutely perfect for making fabric flowers, which inspired me to make this fun headband!  If you can’t find these scarves (the best seasonal stuff usually sells out pretty quick), then you can also substitute any long, skinny strip of fabric.

Project estimate:

  • Headband,  $1
  • Shamrock scarf, $1
  • Needle and thread, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $2

Making the Roses:

image_1

Thread your needle with about 24″ of thread, doubled. Fold the scarf putting the hemmed edges on the inside until it is about 1″ wide. Fold the end over to make a point as shown in picture.

image_2

Start rolling the scarf. After about three rolls, sew the bottom as in the picture. Continue until your rose is the size you want.

image_3

Cut the scarf and fold it over to hide the raw edge and make a few more stitches to hold it in place. I made three roses.

Making the Leaves:

image_4

Each leaf takes 5″ of fabric. Fold the scarf so that the edges are hidden then fold to a point as shown in the picture.

leaf2

Fold the two edges in towards the middle and then again. Make a few stitches so that it will keep its shape. The hot glue will keep it from coming undone. I made three leaves.

Gluing the Roses and Leaves to the Headband:

glue1

Apply two leaves and then the third. Put the glue directly on the headband then gently place and hold each one down. The same with the roses, apply the glue directly to the headband. This keeps you from using too much glue and burning your fingers.

Here is the order in which I added the parts:

image_6

When placing the roses, do so that they are facing at a slight angle.

There are a zillion ways to make paper flowers – one of our favorite methods is this simple process using coffee filters!  This is a great project for budget wedding decor, or cheap decor for your house, since coffee filters come in large packages for cheap.

Project estimate:
  • Coffee filters, on hand or $1
  • Food coloring, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Poster board, on hand or $1
Total: Free and up
coffee filter flowers
Dye the coffee filters in groups of 25 in the colours you want.  Experiment using one at a time allowing it to dry so you will know the exact colour.  To dye a filter two colours, dip the bottom part into the colouring and let it completely absorb the colour.  After about thirty seconds, remove and turn it over and dip it into your second colour.  Remove the filters and place them on a surface covered with plastic with a layer of newspaper on top.  Let dry until the filters start to separate and take them apart to dry on the newspaper.
image_11
Stack five filters on top of one another.  Using scissors, cut in a circular pattern as shown.
image_5
Take one filter and fold it over to where it has about a three inch “tail”.
image_6
Start rolling the filter towards your body with both hands.  Once you reach the end, put a small spot of hot glue to hold the end to the “bud”.
image_7
Cut the tail off and generously hot glue it to one of the square pieces of the poster board.
image
Put a small dot of hot glue on the end of three filters.  Put a dot of hot glue on the end and glue it to the base of the bud.  Roll the three pieces around about four times and add another spot of glue at the base of the bud.  This will keep the filters from unwinding and will start to shape your rose.
image_1
Repeat Step 6 until your rose is large enough.  If you’re making larger than normal roses, you will need larger pieces of poster board.
image_2
Once your rose is finished, trim off the excess poster board and your rose is ready to use in your design.

what to buy at the dollar tree for your wedding

Wedding season is almost upon us once again!  Are you or anyone you know preparing for the Big Day?  Wedding crafts are among the most popular category of dollar store crafts; when planning a wedding on a budget (and who isn’t these days?) even those who’ve never crafted a day in their lives pick up their glue guns and DIY as much as possible in the name of saving money.  We’ve rounded up some of our favorite wedding-related dollar store crafts.  Wondering what kinds of things you should look for at the dollar store for your wedding crafts?  All of these crafts involve items you can find at Dollar Tree.

[Tissue Paper]

[Balloons]

balloon paper lanterns

[Tissue Paper Balloon Lanterns by Kleas]

If you’re looking for an economical, DIY alternative to store-bought paper lanterns, try this easy idea incorporating balloons and tissue paper.  The resulting papier-mache-like lanterns can be customized easily by using tissue paper in your wedding colors.

[White Wedding Favor Boxes]

[Heart Favor Boxes by Shindig Parties To Go]

This project was originally made for Valentine’s Day, but it translates well to weddings!  Using colorful scrapbook paper, plain white favor boxes are transformed into festive heart favor boxes!  Replace the colors and embellishments however you see fit to make them match your wedding theme; the technique remains the same.

[All-Occasion Gift Wrap]

[Fruit Drop Candies]

[Extra Large Star Party Favors by The Cheese Thief]

These origami star favors are super economical; just a few rolls of wrapping paper is all you need to make enough for all of your guests!  Tuck hard candies or other treats inside as a special surprise for the recipients.

[Clear Cello Wrap]

[Cellophane Origami Star Garland by The Cheese Thief]

Once you’ve mastered folding origami stars, grab a roll of cello wrap and some string to make this crystal-like star garland.  Hang them alongside clear Christmas lights for a little bit of elegant sparkle!

[Silk Roses]

[Round Candle Holders]

[Rose Votive Candle Holders by Two Crafty Mules]

Don’t know what to do with all of those silk flowers in the craft department at Dollar Tree?  If you can find roses in the right colors for your wedding, make rose votive holders!  Look for glass candle holders that are rounded to make a nicely-shaped flower.

[Serving Trays]

[Taper Candle Holders]

[Colorful Tiered Trays by Joy’s Hope]

Tiered trays are one of the most popular varieties of dollar store craft.  This variation, assembled from serving trays and candlesticks, uses spray paint to add a pop of color.  (If you use paint that is not food-safe, make sure you do not place food items directly on the trays; use a barrier such as cocktail napkins or cupcake liners to keep your guests safe!)

[Crepe Paper Streamers]

[Crepe Paper Flower Corsages by Under the Table and Dreaming]

Let’s not forget one of the handmade goodies you will need for members of your wedding party and for distinguished guests: corsages!  While crepe paper streamers are a party decorating staple, fashioning them into frilly flowers is a twist you might not have considered!

What are your favorite wedding crafts using dollar store items?

If you’ve watched more than a couple of hours of TV in the past several years, you’ve probably seen Vince the pitch man get all worked up about the ShamWow.  Dollar Tree carries pretty much the same thing, but the DT version is simply called “Wow!”  (Does that make it a sham ShamWow?)  While I’m sure it will soak up that soda you spilled all over the carpet, my favorite reason to buy a Wow! is to make something crafty out of it! Cindy from so the cook said used one in lieu of heavy felt to make rosettes which she attached to a grapevine wreath, creating a gorgeous display to welcome guests.  She made hers for autumn, but I think it reads equally well for spring!  [how to make a ShamWow flower wreath]

Have you seen the rose-shaped soaps at Dollar Tree?  They look so pretty and smell so good that it’s easy to see why Desirée of The 36th Avenue was drawn to them.  In need of powder room accessories, she came up with a great crafty idea.  By taking the flowers apart and strategically pinning them to a foam ball (also found at Dollar Tree) she ended up with a pretty kissing ball or pomander type of decoration.  To display this piece, you could mount it on top of a glass candlestick, or if you prefer to hang it you can pin a length of ribbon into it.  (You may also wish to add a touch of glue to the ribbon, just in case!)  [how to make a soap flower ball]

If you’ve set foot in a flower shop in recent years, you know that they’re not cheap.  When Debbie from A Creative Life priced out corsages for her son’s girlfriend at prom time, she was aghast at the $20 to $30 price range.  That’s a lot of dough to drop on something that has a one-evening lifespan!  Her son decided it would be much more special to give is girlfriend a corsage made by his own mother, and Debbie was much happier with the $5  or so she spent to make one from scratch.  (With wedding season underway, this tutorial could save you a load on your floral budget!)  [how to make an easy wrist corsage]

Project estimate:

  • Satin wristlet, $1 and up

I’ve been shifting my crafty gears into Valentine mode this past week.  Continuing with my all-things-tiny obsession, I decided that just making a miniature heart-shaped candy box wasn’t enough.  When I came across the ric rac rosette necklace tutorial at Craftify It, I knew that a dozen itty-bitty roses in a wee vase would be perfect!  After much deliberation over how to construct a vase, I had a revelation: stacked buttons!   And what crafter doesn’t have a ridiculous stash of those laying around?  I couldn’t be happier with how it came out.  It makes me giggle just to look at it!

Project estimate:

  • Buttons, on hand
  • Ric rac, on hand or $1
  • Green paper, on hand
  • Craft paint (optional), on hand
  • Glue, on hand
  • Mod Podge, on  hand

Total:  Free and up

To make the vase, you will need buttons in varying sizes.  I used 14 buttons, but you can use more or less to get the size and shape of vase you want.

Stack the buttons and glue them together, working from small buttons to large buttons, then back to small and up to large again.   This will create the classic shape of a vase.

To make the roses, I used the ric rac rosette tutorial from Craftify It.  I wanted red roses, but the only red ric rac I had was too wide and made roses that were too large for my vase.  I did have skinnier ric rac in white, so  instead of buying new ric rac, I made white roses and painted them red with craft paint.

Cut the ric rac into sections about 2 inches long to make tiny roses.  Before you roll them, coat the ric rac in Mod Podge, then hold the rolled rose until it dries to make the roses hold their shape.   If you are painting your roses, roll them first and then apply the paint after the Mod Podge dries.

Keep working until you have a dozen roses.  (Aren’t they adorable??)

Cut leaf shapes out of green paper.  Glue one or two leaves to each rose.

Glue six roses in a circle around the edge of the top  button.  After the glue is dry, make a second circle on top of the first with five roses; place the final rose in the top of the bouquet.

Paint the roses and leaves with several coats of Mod Podge to make them more durable.  I’ve dropped mine on hardwood floors about a dozen times and it’s none the worse for wear, so they should hold up well when played with!

I still can’t believe how tiny the whole thing is!
