10 DIY Wedding Favors on a Budget

Are you planning a wedding on a budget? It’s been a long time since I planned my own wedding, but I still remember feeling particularly stressed out about choosing just the right favors. We wanted something that folks would really like to have and that reflected our personalities, but we didn’t have a lot of money to spend. Making your own DIY wedding favors saves a buck and gives your guests a more personalized memento to remember your special day.

1. Seed Packets. My husband and I did a version of this idea from English Wedding at our own wedding almost nine (!) years ago. I love the idea that those some of those herb seeds folks took home are still thriving somewhere.

2. Homemade Jam. A good friend made big batches of homemade, seasonal jams and jellies for her wedding favors. We all got together for a crafternoon to put labels on the jars with her. Inspire the Bride has a set of printable labels that you can use to make your homemade jam look totally professional.

3. Donations. This “Doggy Bag” project by Marry This is just one example, but I love the idea of doing a very small favor and making a donation to charity instead.

4. Fortune Cookies – How sweet are these handmade, paper fortune cookies from Once Wed?

5. Match Boxes. These puntastic, colorful match box designs from Bespoke Bride are so, so cute. And you can print them out for free!

6. Succulents. These cute succulents from Wedding Chicks do double duty: they’re place cards AND favors. Knocking out two things at once is the ultimate wedding craft.

7. Homemade Tea. Mix your own tea blend or buy a bag of bulk tea to stuff these sweet homemade fabric tea bag favors from Ruffled. There are both sew and no-sew instructions.

8. Cactus Blooms. This reminds me of the seed packets, but cacti are way harder to kill. Great idea, Divine Caroline!

9. Terrarium Place Holders. Another favor that doubles as a placeholder, this time from Wednesday Lettering and Letterpress.

10. Fancy Chocolate, Fancily Wrapped. Who doesn’t love chocolate? Get your favorite candy bars and personalize them for your guests. Chelsea from Frolic shared this tute at My Wedding. She used fabric yardage, but you could save a buck and wrap your bars with stash fabric.

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, you know that one of the best ways to save money is to DIY as much of it as possible.  (My father always says, “Why pay someone else to do what you could do yourself?”  Mind you, that doesn’t make me any more likely to change my own oil, which is more along the lines of what he was usually talking about.  But hey, whatever, right?)  We love cheap wedding ideas, so when we got wind of the Crafterminds Wedding Crafts series, we rounded up a collection of our favorite DIY wedding projects.  Be sure to check out the links at the bottom of the post for more wonderful wedding ideas from some of our friends!

Wedding decor doesn’t have to be expensive to be eye-catching and memorable.  These DIY rope words from Wednesday at Green Wedding Shoes (pictured above) are a great example of how a simple, inexpensive material can be manipulated into something that is much more than the sum of its parts.  Use this idea to create wall art, table decor, or even placecards for your guests.  For large letters use thick rope; to make smaller words, try twine instead.

[10 DIY Garland Ideas by A Beautiful Mess]

Another way to add special yet inexpensive touches to your wedding decor is with a pretty garland.  Over at A Beautiful Mess, Elsie came up with ten different garland ideas that are all as cute as can be.  Can’t decide which one is your favorite?  They are easy and inexpensive enough that you can go crazy and make them all!

[Tablecloth Ball by A Girl and a Glue Gun]

If you like the look of the big tissue paper pom-poms but are having an outdoor wedding, you may find yourself concerned about how they will hold up in the event of inclement weather.  Using a plastic tablecloth from the dollar store, Kim from A Girl and a Glue Gun made this pretty alternative that is just as cute and easy but far more rain-resistant.

[DIY Bath Bombs by Intimate Weddings]

I’m a fan of functional party favors – things your guests will find useful.  Things like these pretty DIY bath bombs by Christina at Intimate Weddings!  A big chunk of the ingredients list are things you probably have in your pantry already!  These bombs are fairly large because they were made using snap-together Christmas ornaments as a mold; for making smaller bath bombs, silicone ice cube trays or candy molds would also work well.

[Hot Pepper Party Favors by Project Wedding]

And how about plants as wedding favors?  Small potted plants make a fun gift that keeps on giving, whether you opt for pretty flowers or for something edible, like these hot pepper plant favors from Project Wedding.  The options for customizing this project are endless between the infinite combinations of plant choices, ways to decorate the pot, and clever sayings to print out and turn into plant stakes!

what to buy at the dollar tree for your wedding

Wedding season is almost upon us once again!  Are you or anyone you know preparing for the Big Day?  Wedding crafts are among the most popular category of dollar store crafts; when planning a wedding on a budget (and who isn’t these days?) even those who’ve never crafted a day in their lives pick up their glue guns and DIY as much as possible in the name of saving money.  We’ve rounded up some of our favorite wedding-related dollar store crafts.  Wondering what kinds of things you should look for at the dollar store for your wedding crafts?  All of these crafts involve items you can find at Dollar Tree.

[Tissue Paper]

[Balloons]

balloon paper lanterns

[Tissue Paper Balloon Lanterns by Kleas]

If you’re looking for an economical, DIY alternative to store-bought paper lanterns, try this easy idea incorporating balloons and tissue paper.  The resulting papier-mache-like lanterns can be customized easily by using tissue paper in your wedding colors.

[White Wedding Favor Boxes]

[Heart Favor Boxes by Shindig Parties To Go]

This project was originally made for Valentine’s Day, but it translates well to weddings!  Using colorful scrapbook paper, plain white favor boxes are transformed into festive heart favor boxes!  Replace the colors and embellishments however you see fit to make them match your wedding theme; the technique remains the same.

[All-Occasion Gift Wrap]

[Fruit Drop Candies]

[Extra Large Star Party Favors by The Cheese Thief]

These origami star favors are super economical; just a few rolls of wrapping paper is all you need to make enough for all of your guests!  Tuck hard candies or other treats inside as a special surprise for the recipients.

[Clear Cello Wrap]

[Cellophane Origami Star Garland by The Cheese Thief]

Once you’ve mastered folding origami stars, grab a roll of cello wrap and some string to make this crystal-like star garland.  Hang them alongside clear Christmas lights for a little bit of elegant sparkle!

[Silk Roses]

[Round Candle Holders]

[Rose Votive Candle Holders by Two Crafty Mules]

Don’t know what to do with all of those silk flowers in the craft department at Dollar Tree?  If you can find roses in the right colors for your wedding, make rose votive holders!  Look for glass candle holders that are rounded to make a nicely-shaped flower.

[Serving Trays]

[Taper Candle Holders]

[Colorful Tiered Trays by Joy’s Hope]

Tiered trays are one of the most popular varieties of dollar store craft.  This variation, assembled from serving trays and candlesticks, uses spray paint to add a pop of color.  (If you use paint that is not food-safe, make sure you do not place food items directly on the trays; use a barrier such as cocktail napkins or cupcake liners to keep your guests safe!)

[Crepe Paper Streamers]

[Crepe Paper Flower Corsages by Under the Table and Dreaming]

Let’s not forget one of the handmade goodies you will need for members of your wedding party and for distinguished guests: corsages!  While crepe paper streamers are a party decorating staple, fashioning them into frilly flowers is a twist you might not have considered!

What are your favorite wedding crafts using dollar store items?

glass slipper wedding favor

Have you checked the wedding section at Dollar Tree lately? They always have lots of good stuff to craft with. One of our readers, Jennifer, over at the Dollar Store Crafts Facebook page just brought home a load of closeout wedding stuff and wants to know what to make with it:

All right, so my dollar store had some of the wedding stuff discounted 75% off! I knew I could make crafts with them, but I am lacking some ideas. I ended up with the 80 packs of gold rings, the packs of small clear plastic Cinderella shoes and some small plastic swans. Any suggestions? I was thinking of doing a mod podge/glitter combo on the shoes to make them sparkle, but other than that I cant think of anything. Oh and be on the lookout for clearanced wedding stuff! We stopped by another dollar store and they had them 50% off.

So, what to do with:

  • plastic slippers
  • wedding rings
  • small plastic swan containers

Go to it, readers!
