Tea Cup Favor DIY

I was perusing the Dollar Store Crafts Pinterest board to find fun crafts to try, and a certain pin caught my eye.  DSC had featured this adorable project several years ago, and I knew I wanted to make them myself.  I put my own spin on it and changed a few things to make own version of an Easter egg tea cup.  I know you have a ton of those plastic Easter eggs around your house, don’t you?  For this project you’ll just use the larger half of the plastic egg.

easter egg cup

Project estimate:

  • Plastic Easter eggs, on hand
  • Paper clips ,on hand
  • Wood doll pin stands, $1 and up
  • Paint, on hand
  • Hot glue gun, on hand
Total:  $1 and up
supplies
Step one:  Paint designs on the plastic eggs.  I used the end of my paint brush to make polka dots.  On one of them I painted tiny hearts.  You could paint stripes, check marks, etc.
step 1
Step two:  Paint the doll pin stands.
paper clips
Step three:  Pull the ends of the paper clip apart to make a “v” shape.
Step four:  Use a hot glue gun to adhere the egg to the base and to add the cup handle.

You can fill the cups with treats to make cute party favors.  They would look fun as table decor for a party, too!  If a child is going to play with them, you will probably want to superglue the paper clip handle on for added durability.  Have fun crafting and creating!

P.S.  Hold on to the other part of the plastic egg!  I’m putting together a project to use those, too!

Candy Party Decor

Birthday season is approaching in my house, and you know as well as I do that if you’re going to DIY a party, you have to start early!  My daughter likes to play the classic game of “Candyland”, which would make for a fun kid’s party theme, too.  With that in mind, I started making giant candy pieces to use for decor.

Giant Candy Party Decor

Project estimate:

  • Mini Paper lanterns , $1 for two at Michael’s
  • Tulle, on hand or $1 and up
  • Twine, on hand or $1

Total:  $1 and up for two

IMG_1699
To make your own paper lantern candy decor:

Step one:  Assemble the lanterns.

Step two:  Cut the tulle into strips long enough to cover the lantern plus leave an extra 6 inches on each end.

IMG_1703

Step three:  Lay the tulle on a flat surface and begin to wrap the lantern.

IMG_1701

Step four:  Tie the ends with twine and fluff the tulle out.  Trim the ends as needed.

I wish you could have seen my kids eyes when they saw the giant candy!  My one year old kept trying to rip them open to see what was inside.  That gave me the idea to use them as party favors, too.  Fill the lantern with goodies before you wrap them, use them as decor, then send them home with your guests at the end of the party!

Do you have extra wrapping paper laying around?  I always end up with partial rolls left over after buying them to wrap one gift; a friend’s wedding, a coworker’s baby shower, or some other occasion comes and goes and my wrapping paper collection grows and grows.  Short of wrapping everything in sight, how do you use up some of that stash that’s lurking at the back of your closet?  Rena from The Cheese Thief used long, skinny strips of wrapping paper to fold origami stars that she filled with treats, making fun and super-duper cheap party favors.  Even if you have to go out and buy paper, you can make dozens of these in any theme for just a few bucks!  [how to make extra large star party favors]

Project estimate:

  • Wrapping paper, on hand or $1
  • Treats, $1 and up

doily covered soap

I’m on a doily kick this week! Chris posted a link to this great idea on the Dollar Store Crafts Facebook Page, and as soon as I clicked on it, my head exploded. As soon as I put it back together, I clicked back over here to tell you about this amazing craft hack. Take a store-bought doily (or crocheted lace tablecloth), and use it as a covering for soap instead of spending hours crocheting your own cover. With the ingenious instructions by Kirsty at kootoyou, you can crank a batch of these lovelies out for Mother’s Day, wedding favors, or teacher’s gifts. Oh, and the covers are reusable! [how to make doily covered soaps in 5 minutes]

Project Estimate:

  • Bar of soap, $1
  • Crocheted doily, pack of 2 for $1
  • Elastic thread, on hand or $2
  • Tapestry needle, on hand

Total: $1.50 and up

Note about soap: obviously you can find a better deal on soap than $1 a bar! This would be a fantastic treatment for handmade soap. Ooh, it makes me want to get my soapmaking stuff out again.

You loved my post on how to have a dollar store wedding, so I’ve gathered up some other great dollar store wedding ideas for you. If you’re looking for cheap wedding ideas, inexpensive wedding ideas, do it yourself wedding favors, or just a little wedding inspiration, check out my finds for this week:

Stamped Favor Bags: $3

Make custom favor bags for your wedding by stamping an image on the front and adding flowers and ribbon. The dollar store usually has mini organza gift bags (not like the muslin shown here) that would work for this, and you can always find flowers (or other embellishments: beads, buttons, trinkets, etc.) and ribbon easily. Find instructions at My DIY Wedding Day.

Wallpaper Scrap-Covered Chocolates: $1 and up

Take scraps of wallpaper (you could even use samples from old wallpaper sample books), cut to size and cover mini chocolate bars. Add a little glitter for a pretty and sparkly favor. For a wedding favor, print a tiny label with your event details and stick it to the bottom of the bar. This adorable idea would work for a variety of events, from weddings, bridal showers, flowery birthday parties or even tea parties. Project by Kellie at Ada and Darcy.

Wedding Coloring Book: $1 and up

I love this idea: a wedding coloring book for your pint-sized guests. Actually, I think coloring books would be great favors for guests of all ages. I found this idea (along with a lot of other good ideas and great money-saving wedding tips) at Gingerbread Snowflakes. Great Ideas for Budget Weddings

Rhinestone Monogrammed Bouquet Wrap: $2

I found this fun DIY bouquet wrap idea and I just knew you could do it on a dollar store budget. Dollar Store Craft-ize this project with those rhinestone monograms they have in the crafts section at Dollar Tree – just cut the dollar store monogram into individual stones to set in the shape you want. Check out this project for more info on this rhinestone technique. Make a Rhinestone Monogrammed Bouquet Wrap at Crafts Unleashed.

Here’s another great use for those flat decorative marbles. I love the colors used in this dreamy jeweled planter by Centsational Girl. These are a great way to glam up your patio, but I think they would also be fantastic for wedding decorations or centerpieces, or as decor for a baby or wedding shower. They would even be fun for a little girl tea party or princess party. Really, you can adapt them for a ton of uses just by switching out the paint and marble colors. [click here for full instructions]

Project Estimate:

  • Terra cotta planter, $1
  • Outdoor spray paint, $3 or on hand
  • Glass marbles (with flat side), $1
  • Silicone rubber sealant from hardware store to adhere marbles, $3.23

Total: $5.23 plus $1 for each additional planter

I have always loved the little boxes you can fold with paper. They’re so useful for tiny keepsakes or gifts. Handmade by Deb has taken the cute origami box one step further by embellishing it with initial stickers. These would make fantastic favor boxes for weddings, showers, or parties. [click here for a video tutorial]

Also, don’t miss this other fantastic origami box tutorial by Deb: Sanbo Origami Boxes.

Deb also gave me the secret lowdown on these boxes: the origami paper and stickers were purchased at the dollar store! She got the origami paper in a pack of 100 with 10 different sizes (you need two different sizes to make the lid and base of this box). Deb’s stickers were $1.25 for 300.

Project Estimate:

  • Origami paper or scrap paper cut into squares, $1 or on hand
  • Stickers, $1 or on hand
