I made these Victorian-inspired flower cones using a dollar store party hat and ribbon! This was such a fun way to play with my leftover ribbon, trim, buttons and broken jewelry, and it’s an activity you can customize to whoever is working on it. Kids can decorate the party hats with stickers, while adults can do a more elaborate version like my Victorian version. Use these cones to hold flowers (especially on May 1st, May Day) that you can give to your lucky friends. Get the tutorial I posted over at [Amazing Moms]

These would be amazing wedding decorations any time of the year!

Project Estimate:

  • Party hats, 8 for $1
  • Acrylic craft paint, on hand
  • Ribbon and trim, on hand
  • Buttons, jewelry, etc., on hand
  • Craft glue, on hand

Total: $.13 each!

p.s. These look awesome hanging from my shabby chic hooks!

Bonus idea: Turn them upside-down and use them for fancy birthday party hats!

(Baby G, my crafting partner-in-crime. Okay, I do most of the crafting!)

Make an Adorable Medallion Banner https://dollarstorecrafts.com/2009/10/medallion-banner/ https://dollarstorecrafts.com/2009/10/medallion-banner/#comments Mon, 26 Oct 2009 11:59:00 +0000 http://dollarstorecrafts.com/2009/10/make-an-adorable-medallion-banner/ Sarah from Makin’ Projiks created these adorable medallions from Halloween coasters, crepe paper, and stickers, and strung them into a great banner. I love the use of simple materials to make such a festive garland. (Plus, if you’re a longtime DSC fan, you’ll know I love me some garlands). The concept of these medallions is […]

Sarah from Makin’ Projiks created these adorable medallions from Halloween coasters, crepe paper, and stickers, and strung them into a great banner. I love the use of simple materials to make such a festive garland. (Plus, if you’re a longtime DSC fan, you’ll know I love me some garlands). The concept of these medallions is not limited to Halloween or even to banners. You can use these simple materials to make medallions for any occasion or holiday (including birthdays, showers, etc.), and you can use the medallions by themselves (award ribbons?), as decorations on other items, or as shown, in banner form. Thanks to my friend Susan for the tip! [click here for original project] [bonus: and here are instructions for crepe paper ruffles]

Project Estimate:

  • Pack of chipboard coasters, $1 and up
  • Crepe paper, $1
  • Stickers, $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand

Total: $3 and up

How cute are these dainty stands, made to hold just one cupcake each? I love this idea, by reader Jackie at Made by the Mama Monster! Wouldn’t it be fun for a tea party or baby shower? Of course, the concept of gluing one glass thing to another is very versatile, and can be used for many different applications. The dollar store actually has a decent selection of dishes, glasses, and other things that are perfect for this kind of project. If you’re not into displaying individual cupcakes, try this idea to add height to your holiday table, or for a side table of goodies. [link to project instructions]

Project Estimate:

  • Glass candle dish, $1
  • Glass candle stick, $1
  • Glue (E6000 or Gorilla Glue), on hand (you can also use hot glue for a non-permanent display)

Total: $2

The American Crafts blog posted this pretty spring bouquet idea to brighten up your home. It would also be great for shower (baby, bridal) decorations (use bouquets for table decorations, and one flower for cupcake toppers!) or a gift Mother’s Day. You could omit the skewers and turn these pretty blooms into a fun gift brooch, too. I would skip the soda can display and opt for a pretty drinking glass or teacup. [project here via hostess blog]

The project uses premade die-cut felt flowers, but you can easily cut your own felt flowers. Put some rice or sand (or floral foam) in the cup for easy arranging.

Project Estimate:

  • Felt, $.25 a sheet or on hand
  • Buttons, $1 or on hand
  • Bamboo skewers, $1
  • Ribbon, $1 or on hand
  • Thread, on hand
  • Vase, tea cup, or drinking glass, on hand or $1
  • Floral foam, rice, or sand, on hand or $1

Total cost: $1 and up
