Faux Galvanized Cake Stand

Galvanized metal has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years as farmhouse and shabby chic design styles come back into fashion.  Love the look but don’t want to fork over the cash for some of the fancy galvanized pieces you see at places like West Elm or Pottery Barn?  If you shop the fancy catalogs, galvanized serving pieces can cost $30 or more.  Maysem at Ode to Inspiration took matters into her own hands, transforming shiny “silver” objects from the dollar store into a cake stand with a faux galvanized finish.  Displayed alongside actual galvanized pieces, you’d be hard-pressed to spot the impostor!  [how to make a faux galvanized cake stand]

Project estimate:

  • Metal tray, $1
  • Metal bucket, $1
  • Paints, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand
  • Jute twine, on hand or $1

Total:  $2 and up

Teapot Dessert Stand

Last year, I fell in love with a lamp that was available at Anthropologie.  I didn’t need a lamp, though, so I started thinking of ways to recreate the look in a form that was more useful.  I came up with a fun bird bath, instead.  One reader suggested that I adapt the idea to make a cake stand, and I thought that was a perfect idea!  Here’s how I made my teapot cake stand, which would be a really fun centerpiece for a tea or party.  Everyone will ask where you got it, and you can say, “I made it myself!”

I found all my items at the thrift store, but you could also find almost everything at the dollar store, too.  You probably even have some of these pieces sitting around your house!
stacked dish cake stand
Project estimate:
  • Bowl. on hand or $1 and up
  • Tea pot, on hand or $1 and up
  • Various cups, containers, and saucers, on hand or $1 and up
  • Large plate, on hand or $1 and up
  • E-6000 glue, on hand
  • Primer or adhesion promoter, on hand
  • Spray paint, on hand
Total:  Free and up

Begin by collecting the items you need.  I recommend using a wide bowl for the bottom.  I usually start with more saucers and tea cups than I need, so I have options to choose from.
Begin stacking the items until you find a set that is visually appealing to you.  The most important thing is to have a wide, sturdy base, so the entire thing does not topple over.
assemble
Use E-6000 to glue the pieces together.  Start from the base, and glue the bottom two pieces together. Let it set for a few minutes, then proceed to the next piece.  You may want to use a level to make sure that your tower doesn’t start to lean.  You don’t want the top plate to be crooked…then your cake might slide off!
Once the cake stand has been assembled, it’s time to paint!  I took a short cut and used spray paint.  You could also use multi-surface paints or glass paint to achieve a different finish.
Food will be on the top plate, so you want to keep that food safe and spray paint free.  I turn my projects upside down on a box so I can spray paint everything but the top of the top plate.   (You may have noticed that the photo below is a different project…that one is much too tall for a cake stand!  Adjust the number of  items you use to make your stand an appropriate size.)
spray paint
Since my ceramic surfaces were slick, I used a spray on adhesion promoter (like primer).  After that had dried, I then spray painted the cake stand.  If you wanted to take it up a notch, you could use stencils to add pretty designs to the piece.
Teapot cake stand
Isn’t this a fun way to turn unused pieces into something that will be useful and loved?  My cake stand gets LOTS of attention, and it’s just such a fun piece to have at a get together.  Have fun crafting and creating!

Make a Wicker Cake Stand

Wicker is one of those classic looks that I don’t think will ever go out of style!  If you are a wicker lover, then you will absolutely fall in love with this cake stand idea from Diane at In My Own Style.  The use of wicker gives it a very picnic-y feel that is perfect for outdoor entertaining, and it brings an element of fanciness to a spread while still being casual enough for everyday occasions.  (It’s so easy to make that it would be great as a last-minute hostess gift as well!)  [how to make a wicker cake stand]

Project estimate:

  • Wicker plate holder, $1 and up
  • Candlestick, on hand or $1
  • Glue, on hand

Total: $1 and up

If someone said to you, “I made a cloche out of a garbage can,” your first response probably wouldn’t be, “ooh, I bet that is really pretty!”  And yet…  it is really pretty!  I love how Krista from The Gathering Place Design styled her creation with a nesting bird figurine, giving it a look reminiscent of a vintage bird cage.  On her blog, she also shows the same arrangement with a different cake stand and a crystal knob instead of a filigreed finial to demonstrate that the project can also take on a softer look.  [how to make a wire basket cloche]

Project estimate:

  • Wire trash can, $1
  • Spray paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Knob or finial, on hand or $1 and up
  • Cake stand, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $1 and up

Over at Craft Jr., my friend Wendy is doing a series of 12 days of Gift Crafts Kids can Make, and the project for Day 6 is fantastic! She made a faux mercury glass cake stand using dollar store supplies and one secret ingredient from the craft store. I love the concept behind her series: crafts that are easy and fun enough for kids to make but are gifts that adults would actually want to receive. [how to make a gilded cake stand]

The price of this project varies depending on the metal leaf you buy, but a package of metal leaf should make several of these stands. I found Metal Leaf Flake online at Mister Art for $5.13: Mona Lisa Metal Flakes gold. Surprisingly, the gold leaf was cheaper than the copper by a few cents, and the silver leaf was a few dollars more. You’ll also need metal leaf adhesive to stick the metal leaf on. If you don’t have the budget for metal leaf, try some metallic spray paint instead.

Project Estimate:

  • Plate, $1
  • Candle stick, $1
  • E-6000 glue, on hand
  • Flake Metal Leaf, $5.13 and up
  • Metal leaf adhesive, $2.39 (also at Mister Art: metal leaf adhesive)
  • Outdoor Mod Podge, on hand

Total: Less than $10 for one, price goes down significantly per piece if you make more than one

Try this technique with some of our other projects, too, like the Apothecary Jar or use this technique to make pretty silvery votive holders.

I love this idea! Make a rustic “woodland chic” cake stand with a few slices of wood. How pretty are these? They would be amazing for a wedding, or any party where a little rustic charm is needed. Project by Once Wed. [click here for instructions] [via Threadbanger]

You will need to get to the craft store (check the woodburning section) to find cross-cut wood plaques, and will want to scavenge some tree limbs when someone in your neighborhood is pruning (or maybe it’s time to add “prune tree limbs” to your honey-do list!). You will need to pick up some wood glue to add to your crafting arsenal. You can find faux flowers at your dollar store.

Project Estimate:

  • Cross-cut wood plaque, $3.50
  • Tree limbs cut into sections, on hand or go find some!
  • Wood glue, on hand

Total: $3.50
