Necklace Idea: Statement Stone Necklace Tutorial using $1 materials from Fire Mountain Gems

Take a few pretty focal pendants made of stone, and turn them into a pretty statement necklace. This Statement Stone Necklace takes less than an hour to make, and uses three pretty focal pendants that cost just $1 — for all THREE (from my sponsor, Fire Mountain Gems — affiliate links included in this post). I braided three chains to make a sturdy chain for these eye-catching stones.

I recently got a few goodies from the Fire Mountain Gems $1 sale, and they challenged me to make something with the things they sent me. I was immediately inspired by the group of three focal stones, and I thought they might even look good if grouped together in a single necklace.

Since you can’t often find jewelry-making supplies at the dollar store, I heartily recommend checking out Fire Mountain Gems for their $1 sale, which goes until April 11.

Statement Stone Necklace Tutorial

Project Materials:

  • 3 Stone Focal Pendants, $1
  • 3 18″ chains, $1 each
  • Large jump rings, $1 or on hand
  • Eye pins, $1 or on hand
  • Pliers (Needle nose, chain nose, or round nose will work), on hand
  • Lobster clasp, $1 or on hand

Total cost: $4 and up

Statement Stone Necklace Tutorial

Step 1: If your chains have clasps on them already, remove them. In my case, my three chains were 18″ unfinished chains. Instead of using an additional lobster clasp, you can reuse the clasp from one of your chains, if you like.

Put the three chains on a jump ring, and then put the lobster clasp onto the jump ring. Close the jump ring.

Step 2: Clip the lobster clasp onto something (like a safety pin on your jeans!!), and then braid the three chains together.

Step 3: Put the three ends of the braided chain through a small jump ring, then add a large jump ring to use with the lobster clasp.

Statement Stone Necklace Tutorial

The braided chain makes a sturdy backdrop for the three large focal beads!

Step 4: Insert long eye pins into the holes of each focal bead, and wrap the end of the eye pin around the top, wire-wrapping style. Alternately, use an ice pick bail to mount the focal beads.

Attach each prepared focal bead to the braided chain using a jump ring.

You’re done! You can also add as many additional embellishments as you like. Get creative – there are so many fun beads to buy at the $1 sale!

The skull ice cube trays at the Dollar Tree have been featured in several projects at DSC, and here is another fun idea for them.  You can use them to create spooky cool pendants to wear!  Make a whole tray of them for an inexpensive Halloween party favor or a special “treat” for your friends.
Project estimate:
  • Skull ice cube tray, $1
  • Resin, on hand or about $5 and up
  • Glitter, on hand or $1
  • Black Paint, on hand
  • Bail, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $1 and up

1.  Pour-on resin can be found at craft stores, and with a coupon you can get it for around $5.  I used Envirotex Resin.  Read the instructions before using!  I use a disposable cup to mix one plastic spoonful  of each of the solutions together.  Pour a small amount into the ice cube tray.  If there are a lot of bubbles in your resin, blast it very briefly and carefully with heat from an embossing gun.  The bubbles will rise to the surface and pop.  Let it cure overnight.
2.  Mix glitter and glue (or use Stickles) and brush a layer onto the dried resin in the tray.  Let dry.
3.  Mix another batch of resin and pour it into the mold, over the dried glitter.  Cure 24 hours.
4.  Pop the skulls out of the silicone ice cube tray.  Don’t worry if they have a dull finish…we’ll fix that at the end!
5.  Brush black paint over the mouth and crack in the skull, then rub the excess off with a towel.  Paint should remain in the details.  You can paint the eyes and nose or fill them in with a Sharpie pen.
6.  Brush a light layer of resin over the painted skull face.  This seals the paint and gives the finished product an incredible shine.
7.  Use E-6000 glue to adhere a bail to the back of the pendant (I used a bail and a jump ring I saved from broken jewelry).
My two older boys were so excited to see this finished project!  This pendant would work all year round, not just for Halloween.  You could change the color of the glitter and the paint to customize your pendant, too.  There are so many fun possibilities!

So, you have this absolutely incredible idea for making a necklace.  You get halfway through making it and, as you sift through your collection of findings, realize that you are out of bails (the little parts you glue into pendants that allow a chain to pass through).  Don’t panic!  Thanks to Disney at Ruffles and Stuff, if you have a paperclip laying around, you can fashion your own!  With a few basic essentials that should be in every jewelry maker’s arsenal, you’ll be able to bail yourself out of your supply shortage in no time.  (Okay, go ahead and groan.  I blame my father the Pun Master for my sense of humor!)  Would you ever know that all of the pendants shown here are hung using paperclips?  True story!  [how to make paperclip jewelry bails]

Feathers are popular right now (have you seen those funky feather hair extensions?), and reader Nathalia Rojas found a way to make her own dangly earrings with colorful feathers. Inspired by a pair of earrings she saw on the cover of Seventeen, she took a pair of $1 earrings and added colorful feathers. She bought her feathers at Hobby Lobby, but you can often find colorful feathers at the dollar store, either attached to dreamcatchers or on feather dusters (sure, why not use those ones?). Find the full tutorial at Nathalia’s blog: [how to make feather earrings]

Project Estimate:

  • Feathers, $1
  • Earrings, $1 or on hand (take apart an old pair)

A few months ago, a friend offered me a big bag of yarn she’d somehow acquired despite being entirely un-crafty.  Of course I accepted; I mean, really, who can turn down free supplies?  Included at the bottom of the bag was a collection of knitting needles.  This would be an awesome score if not for the glaring reality that I couldn’t knit my way out of a yarn basket.  I have them tucked away for safekeeping on the odd chance that I one day get around to learning, but I have a feeling they’re probably destined for an alternative use.  I’m loving the look of these knitting needle bangles by Jess of Epheriell Designs.  Now there’s a use for these darned things that I know I can handle!  [how to make knitting needle bangles]

Project estimate:

  • Plastic knitting needles, on hand or $1 and up
  • Boiling water, on hand
  • Mandrel or other round object, on hand

Bow ties are totally in right now, and that makes me happy.  I’ve always liked the look.  My inner geek likes to think that Doctor Who made them cool again.  But does such a classic look ever really go out of style?  I like to think not.  That’s why I’m loving this bow tie necklace by Melissa of Ador.  It’s a great girly adaptation of what is traditionally a gentleman’s attire.  It’s also got stashbusting potential, since I’ve got both piles of fabric and bags of old costume jewelry to dig through!  [how to make a bow tie necklace]

Gail even found her “sea glass” in the flower arranging section at the dollar store. [full project instructions here]

If you don’t already have them, you can find wire cutters and needle nose pliers at some dollar stores (they’re in the craft section of my local store). You can also usually find some kind of all-purpose glue that can be used on glass in the tool section.

Project Estimate:

  • Beach glass, $1
  • 16 gauge wire, $1-2
  • 24 gauge wire, $1-2
  • Metal charm (optional), $1
  • Gel super glue, on hand
  • Wire cutters & needle nose pliers, on hand
