Woodland Cupcake Stand

We celebrated my nephew’s first birthday recently, and my sister chose an adorable woodland gnome theme for the party. I offered to make a cupcake stand for the party and recruited my husband to help me with it (because I can’t be trusted with power tools!) I love the project that we made together! Keep reading to learn how you can make an adorable woodland themed cupcake stand. This is perfect for any party with an outdoor or fairy theme.

Make Woodland Cupcake Stand

Project Estimate:

  • Cut Wood – on hand
  • Dowel Rods – on hand
  • Wood stain – on hand
  • Screws – on hand
  • Embellishments – on hand

Total: Free

steps

Step one: Cut the wood into plate sized ovals or circles, and sand the edges. Arrange the pieces until you have a shape and size that you like and that is balanced. If you don’t have a piece for the base like I did, you can start with a large circular cut of wood for the base.

Step two: Use screws to attach the dowel rods and wood pieces together.

Step three: Stain the dowel rods so they match the cut wood pieces.

Step four: Embellish the cupcake stand with butterflies, flowers, etc.  I used hot glue to attach them.

Make a Cupcake Stand

If you don’t have cut trees on hand like we did, you can find similar pieces of wood at your local hobby store. Of course, using materials you have on hand means you can make this project with no expense! You could add flowers all around this for a shower, add glitter and wings for a fairy themed party, or lots of insects for a bug party. Have fun crafting and creating!

My friend Beckie at Infarrantly Creative is known for her amazing “roadside rescues” but last week she created a sweet dollar store homage to The Wizard of Oz. Can you spot the dollar store element? She found some glass slipper party favors in the wedding section of Dollar Tree and transformed them into ruby slippers. I love the creativity! She made a cute frame for a beloved family photo, but this idea would be fun for a Wizard of Oz-themed party or shower, too. [how to make a ruby slipper frame]

Project Estimate:

  • Frame, $1
  • Glass slipper party favors, $1
  • Red acrylic paint, on hand
  • Fine red glitter, on hand or $1 (I have seen fine glitter in the dollar section at Michael’s)

Total: $2 and up

The dollar store has an entire aisle of faux flowers. I admit, these have stumped me. I am not much of a faux flowers person, so I just never buy them and never make anything with them. This idea, by Holiday Crafts and Creations, is a wedding kissing ball, or pomander. The pomanders shown in this photo are made with handmade paper daisies (awesome!), but the process of making all those paper flowers is way too fussy for me. Instead, I would buy faux flowers at the dollar store and use them to make wedding kissing balls inspired by these. Similar look, but a lot simpler. [click here to find instructions to make these paper flower pomanders]

Use these to decorate for your wedding, as pew decorations, or hanging from a ceiling, awning, or chuppah. You can also carry one as a bouquet (or have your bridesmaids carry them). They’d also make amazing decorations for parties or showers.

Project Estimate (Faux Flower Version):

  • 4” Styrofoam ball, $1
  • 12 brads (for one ball), $1 and up
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1
  • 3 faux flower branches (3 different types: small, medium, and large, in complementary colors), $3
  • 35 – 40 pearl head pins (for one ball): 6mm, $1
  • X-acto knife
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Total: $5 and up

Tiered trays are a top 10 dollar store craft. What does that mean? That you love to make tiered trays, and I’ve seen a LOT of tiered tray projects, and have even featured a couple of them. That said, you have to make an awfully special tiered tray to capture my attention, which is precisely what Julie at Joy’s Hope did in her Dollar Store Craft entry at the CSI project. How did she twist this popular project? By choosing a fabulous color palette and painting her trays and pedestals with bright colors that really pop! Also, the fact that she made several tiered trays adds to their impact. [how to make brightly colored tiered trays]

Not only are Julie’s trays colorful, but you will crack up at her colorful tutorial. Hi-larious. And I quote: “The Valspar is my new boyfriend.” Oh, also, Julie reminds us that the trays are not food safe or dishwasher safe, so be sure to use cupcake liners, doilies, or scrapbook papers underneath anything edible you place on the tray.

Use these for parties, organization, weddings, showers, or whatever else you can think of!

Project Estimate:

  • Three silver-esque trays, $2
  • Two crystal-esque candlestick holders, $2
  • Glue (Julie used Super Glue Fix-All, and I would use e6000), on hand or $1
  • Spray paint, $1 and up per color ($3 or so if you want fashion colors)

Total: $5 and up

Need an elegant, yet simple table decoration for a wedding reception, shower, or birthday party? Look no further than these sweet wine glass candle lamps by Save-On-Crafts via CasaSugar. The materials are simple, as is the process, but the results are fantastic, and will make a big impact on your special event. You can find wine glasses and tea lights (I would go with battery-operated tea lights just because of the paper shade) at the dollar store, and pick up some vellum at your favorite craft store (with your 40% off coupon, of course!) [click here for project instructions]

Project Estimate:

  • Vellum sheets, $2.99/10 sheets
  • Wine glass, $1
  • Battery-operated tea light, 2 for $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Template, free PDF, on hand

Total: $1.79 per light

Elegant Paper Lantern

Well, it’s your friendly neighborhood Masked Mommy again, and this week I decorated a paper lantern with faux flower petals. I think it came out with a very elegant, romantic look. These lanterns would be great for showers, weddings, or decorating a little girl’s room! [complete instructions to project here]

The Dollar Tree was carrying these paper lanterns back in the Spring, but they don’t seem to have them right now. However, they can be found in the dollar aisle at Michael’s. Heather also featured a make-your-own-lantern post here once, so you can make your own if you’re feeling up to it! The faux rose petals came from the Dollar Tree and can be found in the wedding section.

Project Estimate:

  • Paper Lantern $1
  • Flower Petals $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Tea Light, optional $1

Total: $2

Don’t forget to stop by my blog for more crafty ideas ;-)

Who doesn’t need a giant faux cupcake? Gail at Can’t Stop Making Things made this one for a silent auction, but there are lots of occasions that call for giant cupcakes – I’m sure you’ll think of a few! You can get almost everything you need for this at the dollar store, but hurry because pool noodles are nearly out of season (have you noticed the Halloween and Christmas stuff infiltrating stores? That means the summer and pool-related stuff is all on its way out!). Gail also includes instructions for making a faux ice cream sundae. [click here for full project instructions]

You’ll need to visit your local home improvement store to find Great Stuff, which is an expanding foam in a can. It is kind of spendy, but you should be able to get a lot of foam out of it (make multiple cupcakes! or use for other similar projects – it’s great for stage/prop type stuff, so save it for your haunted house project!).

Project Estimate:
  • Plastic tub (paper paint bucket will work too), $1
  • Plastic plate to fit top of tub, $1
  • Swimming “noodle”, $1
  • Red rubber ball from a paddle ball set, $1
  • Wooden skewer, on hand or $1
  • Kraft paper, on hand or $1
  • Great Stuff, about $6.50 a can
  • Wax paper, on hand
  • Glue gun, on hand
  • Serrated bread knife, on hand

Total cost: $11.50 and up

Jessica at Happy Together constantly amazes me with her creative ideas in the areas of decorating, fashion, accessories, and sewing. She does amazingly cute (and frugal) decorations and flower arrangements for events like wedding showers. She made these Martha-inspired tissue paper ball hanging decorations for a recent shower, and when I requested a tutorial for them, she obliged. Thanks so much, Jessica!! [click here for the tissue paper ball tutorial]

These are a great example of my ideal dollar store decorations: handmade, extremely inexpensive, simple, and with big impact. You can use these for any festive occasion: parties, showers, celebrations, holidays, etc. You can vary the size and color according to your needs.

Project Estimate:

  • Large sheets of tissue paper (10 for large ball), $1 for package
  • Pipe cleaner, $1 for package
  • Fishing wire for hanging, on hand
  • Paper clip for hanging, on hand (optional)

Total: $2 for a bunch

Stretching nylons over wire frames to make flowers, fairies, or butterflies is an idea that reminds me of the good old kountry krafting movement of the 80s, but I have seen some new versions of this kind of crafting that are pretty amazing. Take this modern-looking flower arrangement by Craftster user iratokid. She even hand-dyed the nylons (with Easter egg dye!) to get a one-of-a-kind (and more upscale) look. [click here for iratokid’s project]

The basic premise of this craft is creating a shape with wire (in this project, wire hangers), and then stretching nylons over it. Iratokid dyed her nylons with easter egg dye, but you can try using food coloring, vinegar and hot water. She reported that the nylons actually took the dye pretty well. Her project also included some jeweled “wind twisters” that she added to the stems, and a little white picket fence she put around the pot. I’m not including these in the project estimate.

Project Estimate:

  • Knee-high stockings, $1
  • Wire hangers, $1
  • Flower pot, on hand or $1
  • Styrofoam floral cube, on hand or $1
  • Food coloring & vinegar for dye, on hand

Total: $4
