DIY Twig Monogram Ornament

If you do a lot of knitting and crocheting, you probably have a lot of scrap yarn laying around.  Such was the case for Whitney from 3 Squeezes, who found her crafting space buried under odds and ends of leftover fibers.  Not wanting to throw them away, she instead used them to wrap some monogram Christmas ornaments!  While these look like they were made using twigs, she actually created the bases out of wire, making them much more durable than if they’d been made from bits of wood.  [how to make twiggy monogram ornaments]

Project estimate:

  • Wire, on hand or $1 and up
  • Twine, on hand or $1
  • Yarn scraps, on hand
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  Free and up!

Alphabet Pallet Art

We’re quite keen on projects that use pallets or other recycled wood to create beautiful decor. Who doesn’t love a good trash-to-treasure makeover? Kijsa from Kijsa Housman Studios had some scrap wood in her shed, and she coupled it with some dollar store alphabet stickers to create some playful, rustic wall art for her child’s room. If the ABCs aren’t quite your style, you could use this same technique to make it say anything! [how to make alphabet pallet art]

Letter stickers have so many uses – I always keep a ton of them on hand for whenever inspiration strikes! When Lydia from Liddy B. and Me came across a colorful set of alphabet wall stickers at the dollar store, she was inspired to make some art for her friend’s daughter’s bedroom. Not only is it cute and educational, it also contains a hidden message. Do you see it? This would make an excellent baby shower gift, and could also be adapted for use in the classroom. [how to turn alphabet stickers into wall art]

Fun, educational playthings don’t have to cost a lot of money.  For instance, Rena from The Cheese Theif came across some large foam letters at Dollar Tree and, using only a little bit of glue and some packaging foam saved from a fate in the landfill, turned them into a set of rubber stamps for her little one.  They provided hours of entertainment!  It’s a great way to learn about the alphabet and writing for children who have yet to master using pencil, crayons, or markers.  [how to make oversized alphabet stamps]

  • Foam letters, $1

I love this use for old t-shirts: Alphabet beanbags by Katie at Notes from a very red kitchen. They’re so fun and colorful, and by far my favorite thing about them is that there’s an uppercase letter on one side, and the corresponding lowercase letter on the other side! My sons would love these. I also really like the photo of all the alphabet squares in a row – would be fun for a quilt! [click here for the alphabet bean bag tutorial]

Project Estimate:

  • Assorted t-shirts or other clothing, on hand
  • Sewing stuff (machine & thread), on hand
  • Beans or rice, on hand or a few bucks

I am in love with the idea of having a small file full of manila folders that contain fun activities for the kids to do in the car. This fun alphabet matching activity comes from Michelle at Her Cup Overfloweth (home of Muffin Tin Monday), and uses a file folder and dollar store alphabet clings. [click here for full project details]

Michelle cleverly laminated the file folder with clear contact paper to make a great surface for clings to stick to. Also, a series of folders like this would be great for summer travel, whether in the car or on a plane. You should be able to find room for a few folders in your carry-ons. (Sidenote: for more good ideas of crafty things to pack in your child’s carry-on, visit Jojoebi at A Bit of This and A Bit of That).

Project Estimate:

  • Manila folder, on hand or $1 for many
  • Clear contact paper, $1
  • 2 sets of alphabet clings, $2

Total: $3 and up
