So cute! I want to make a dozen scarf headbands, so I can wear a different one every day.

Lately Dollar Tree has been carrying really cute, lightweight scarves for every season and holiday, and we love them!  Heather recently used one to decorate a headband, giving you the perfect knotted-on-top-of-the-head look with practically no effort.

Watch Heather’s video to see how she did it, or keep scrolling to read more.

So cute! I want to make a dozen scarf headbands, so I can wear a different one every day.

Project estimate:

  • Plastic headband, $1
  • Scarf, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $1 and up!

So cute! I want to make a dozen scarf headbands, so I can wear a different one every day.

First, tie the ends of the scarf together in a knot so that they make a cute bow shape.

So cute! I want to make a dozen scarf headbands, so I can wear a different one every day.

This will create a loop of scarf.  With the bow at one end of the loop, find the midpoint of the other end and use scissors to snip it, giving your bow two long tails.

So cute! I want to make a dozen scarf headbands, so I can wear a different one every day.

Hot glue the bow onto the headband where you would like it to be positioned – you will probably want it a little off-center.

So cute! I want to make a dozen scarf headbands, so I can wear a different one every day.

Wrap the long tails around the rest of the headband. Trim the excess from the ends and glue in place.  Repeat with both tails to cover the entire headband with scarf.

So cute! I want to make a dozen scarf headbands, so I can wear a different one every day.

That’s it!

Have you seen the long, skinny scarves that Dollar Tree had for St. Patrick’s Day the last couple of years?  I realized that they are absolutely perfect for making fabric flowers, which inspired me to make this fun headband!  If you can’t find these scarves (the best seasonal stuff usually sells out pretty quick), then you can also substitute any long, skinny strip of fabric.

Project estimate:

  • Headband,  $1
  • Shamrock scarf, $1
  • Needle and thread, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $2

Making the Roses:

image_1

Thread your needle with about 24″ of thread, doubled. Fold the scarf putting the hemmed edges on the inside until it is about 1″ wide. Fold the end over to make a point as shown in picture.

image_2

Start rolling the scarf. After about three rolls, sew the bottom as in the picture. Continue until your rose is the size you want.

image_3

Cut the scarf and fold it over to hide the raw edge and make a few more stitches to hold it in place. I made three roses.

Making the Leaves:

image_4

Each leaf takes 5″ of fabric. Fold the scarf so that the edges are hidden then fold to a point as shown in the picture.

leaf2

Fold the two edges in towards the middle and then again. Make a few stitches so that it will keep its shape. The hot glue will keep it from coming undone. I made three leaves.

Gluing the Roses and Leaves to the Headband:

glue1

Apply two leaves and then the third. Put the glue directly on the headband then gently place and hold each one down. The same with the roses, apply the glue directly to the headband. This keeps you from using too much glue and burning your fingers.

Here is the order in which I added the parts:

image_6

When placing the roses, do so that they are facing at a slight angle.

DIY Skeleton Accessories
I’ve been having fun crafting with these mini skeleton hands!  They are the perfect size for making quick Halloween accesories.  I purchased a pack at Michaels so I could make a set of hair clips, and started thinking of other ways to use them.  I came up with a scarf pin and a really fun fascinator!  Here’s how you can make your own.
Skeleton Crafts

Project estimate:

  • Skeleton hands, $2 per pack
  • Fabric headband, on hand
  • Tulle, on hand or $1
  • Flowers, $1
  • Pin Backs, on hand
Total:  $3 and up
scarf pin
To make the scarf pin:
Use E-6000 to glue the pin to the inside of the hand.  I added pink nail polish for a bit of color, and paired the pin with this scarf from Dollar Tree.
To make the fascinator:
step 1step 2
1.  Cut a strip of tulle, scrunch it and fold it in half.  Sew it onto the headband.  Do this twice.
color flowersstep 3
2.  Tint white fabric flowers with black ink.  Sew them onto the headband.
step 4
3.  Hot glue the hand on top of the flowers.
DIy Fascinator
4.  Cover the hand and flowers with a piece of tulle, and sew the tulle to the headband.
The hair clip tutorial can be found here.
DIy Scarf Pin
I can think of lots of other fun ways to use these boney hands.  They’d make creepy belt buckles, spooky key chains, and haunting pendants.  If only there were more hours in a day to craft all the things!  What would you make with skeleton hands?

Wrapped pumpkins make great fall or Halloween decor. Here’s how to make one on the cheap with dollar store items!

One of the items I was most excited to see in this year’s Halloween selections at Dollar Tree was a selection of cute scarves – so of course I had to pick up a couple of them! I also grabbed a handful of foam pumpkins because they always sell out fast, and as I was unpacking my bags when I got home I was struck with an idea. Why not wrap one of the pumpkins up in one of the scarves? I’m super happy with how it looks and, as an added bonus, if I ever want to disassemble it I only have to untie a few knots and it will come apart with ease!

Watch the video to see how I did it, or keep scrolling for the written step-by-step!

Project estimate:

  • Foam pumpkin, $1
  • Scarf, $1
  • Burlap or scrap fabric, on hand or $1 and up
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1
  • Dowel, on hand or $1
  • Clothespins, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

Scarf Wrapped Pumpkin

Lay out the scarf and place the pumpkin about 1/4 of the way from one of the ends.  Wrap the scarf around the pumpkin and gather the ends at the top of the pumpkin.

Scarf Wrapped Pumpkin

There will still be some of the pumpkin showing on the sides; to cover it, turn the pumpkin 90 degrees and wrap it a second time so that the pumpkin is complete covered with the scarf.  Adjust the edges of the scarf as needed to make them lay flat on the contours of the pumpkin.

Scarf Wrapped Pumpkin

Twist the gathered ends of the scarf together and tie an overhand knot to secure the scarf to the pumpkin, making sure to pull the knot tight.

Scarf Wrapped Pumpkin

To embellish the stem, tie a strip of burlap or scrap fabric around the knotted ends to resemble leaves; to make the curly vines, use green ribbon to make korker ribbon.

Scarf Wrapped Pumpkin

Creating korker ribbon is easy:  Wrap the ribbon around a wooden dowel and secure the ends with clothespins, then place it on a cookie sheet and bake at 275 degrees for about 30 minutes.  Once cooled, remove the ribbon from the dowel and it will stay in a spiral!

Scarf Wrapped Pumpkin

Tie a couple of pieces of korker ribbon around the stem and your pumpkin is ready to display!

10 Upcycled Scarf Ideas for Fall

The official first day of fall is only a few days away! That means it’s time for tights, boots, and scarves! If you could use a new scarf or two in your fall wardrobe, try one of these upcycled scarf ideas to create one on the cheap.

1. Cozy T-Shirt Scarf – T-shirt scarves are usually not super cozy, but this two-ply version looks like it would keep you nice and warm on a fall evening.

2. Sweater Neckerchief – This Anthro-inspired lined sweater scarf is so sweet and simple!

3. Infinity Scarf – Turn a thrift store sweater into an infinity scarf in a flash.

4. Patchwork Sweater Scarf – Sweater crafts never use the whole sweater. Do you have a stash of sweater pieces that need some love? Turn them into a patchwork scarf.

5. Button Scarflette – I love the giganto button details on this sweater-turned-scarflette.

6. Hooded Scarf – If you can track down a hooded sweater at the thrift, it is super simple to turn it into a hooded scarf.

7. Lettuce Scarf – This upcycled scarf uses a simple sewing technique to create a natural ruffle.

8. Sweater Cowl – This is a lined cowl that calls for two sweaters in contrasting fabrics. I love the look of these!

9. Child’s Bow Scarf – Turn two old scarves into one insanely cute row of bows.

10. Skirt to Scarf – Turn a dowdy maxi skirt into a super cute, voluminous scarf in just a few steps.

DIY fabric infinity scarf

One of the most dangerous things I have ever encountered at a craft store?  A whole table of fabrics for $1 per yard.  I’m usually not much of a fabric hoarder, but deals like that bring out my tendency to obsessively collect!  The problem is, I end up with boxes and boxes of pretty cottons – and I very rarely sew.  Since the odds of me digging into a large sewing project (like a garment or a quilt) fall squarely in the slim-to-none range, I am a big fan of super-easy projects like this infinity scarf by Stacey at The Ribbon Retreat.  She used a handful of fat quarters to make her project, so if you’re a collector of those as well (*raises hand*) then you’ll definitely want to check this out!  [how to make a fabric infinity scarf]

Project estimate:

  • Fabric, on hand or $1 and up
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread, on hand

Total:  Free and up

Valentine's Day Infinity Scarf

Every time the holidays change, I make a point of visiting Dollar Tree to see what’s new for the season.  This year I spotted something that I was instantly drawn to: lightweight fabric scarves.  They were obviously made of cheap materials and weren’t much of anything special on their own, but I had a feeling that with a little DIY they could be transformed into something trendy.  I grabbed two of them without knowing what I was going to do with them; days later, I was struck with the thought to make the two scarves into one infinity scarf.  Dollar Tree also had similar scarves for St. Patrick’s Day, so you could also use this same tutorial to make a green one and render yourself pinch-proof!

Project estimate:

  • Scarves, $2
  • Yarn and yarn needle, on hand
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

Valentine's Day Infinity Scarf

I started with two scarves; one scarf has red hearts on a white background, and the other has white hearts on a red background.

Valentine's Day Infinity Scarf

Lay the two scarves one on top of the other with the edges lined up.  Pin the two layers together to keep them in place as you work.

Valentine's Day Infinity Scarf

Thread a length of yarn through a large-eyed needle.  Measure about 6  to 8 inches from the end of the scarves and sew from edge to edge with a simple running stitch.

Valentine's Day Infinity Scarf

Pull to gather and knot the yarn tightly, trimming off any excess.

Valentine's Day Infinity Scarf

Measure another 6 to 8 inches down the scarves and repeat.  Continue down the length of the scarf.

valentine infinity scarf 6

Being careful not to twist the scarves, line up the two ends and pin them together to form a loop.  Sew along where the ends overlap and gather.

Valentine's Day Infinity scarf

To give the scarf a more finished look, cut short lengths of ribbon to wrap around each of the gathers.  Hot glue into place.  Fluff the scarf by separating the two layers of fabric in each section.  Wear by giving it a couple of wraps round your neck.

Scarf Water Bottle Holder

We are an outdoor family through and through.  Some hiking trips we don’t need a huge backpack we just take a snack and a few water bottles.  My biggest pet peeve on these family excursions is when my kids having me holding all their stuff.  I was getting a little frustrated juggling everybody’s water bottles so I came up with a solution from a dollar store scarf, a $1 fix that has been a huge life saver.

Scarf Water Bottle Holder

Project estimate:

  • Scarf, $1
  • Scissors, on hand
  • Sewing pins, on hand
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread, on hand

Total: $1

Scarf Water Bottle HolderI will be honest… I did no measuring for this project.  I simply took a water bottle, held it up, and pinned it according to how deep I wanted the pocket to be around the water bottle.  I turned the scarf wrong side out and pinned the bottom and the two sides.  (Remember that depending on the type of fabric the scarf is made from it may stretch).

Scarf Water Bottle HolderUsing my sewing machine I sewed up the three pinned sides.  I sewed with a 1/4 inch seam.  Make sure you back stitch on the top of the sides.  This will help reinforce your stitching.

Scarf Water Bottle Holder

Once you have finished sewing pull all the pins and turn right side out.

Scarf Water Bottle Holder

You’re all done!  The great thing about using a scarf is you can tie the top to make it the strap longer or shorter. It’s one size fits all!

Tutorial: Scarf or Belt Closet Hanger

I love scarves.  It’s a crazy obsession of mine.  My poor husband has to deal with them hanging on everything in the closet, tucked in every hole and all over the floor.  I needed to come up with a plan to clean them up before he started tossing them out.  I was at the Dollar Store and found wall racks, but  I don’t have a ton of wall space in my closet.  So I paired with a clothes hanger it became a very practical tool for hanging all my scarves and saves me a ton of space!

Tutorial: Scarf or Belt Closet Hanger

Project estimate:

  • 2 wall hook racks, $2
  • Velvet hanger (2 pack), $1
  • Zip ties, on hand or $1
  • Scissors, on hand

Total: $3.00 and up

Tutorial: Scarf or Belt Closet Hanger

Tutorial: Scarf or Belt Closet Hanger

This will be the easiest craft you will ever make and will have the biggest impact on your organization in your closet.  All you have to do is place the velvet hanger between the two racks.  (I used a velvet one because they are thin and help to not make the project bulky.)  Using the zip ties, starting in the top corner on either side, secure the racks together around the hanger.  Tutorial: Scarf or Belt Closet Hanger

Continuing securing with zip ties on the top and bottom.  I used eight zip ties, four on top and four on the bottom.  You may use more or less depending on how much weight it will be holding.  Once you have placed all zip ties on, snip the long ends.

Tutorial: Scarf or Belt Closet Hanger

That’s it!  Your done!  Your closet will look organized and everything will be within reach.

This project comes to us from our pet fashion correspondent Erika from Sew DoggyStyle, whose pooches are the best-dressed canines in all of blogland.  They’re here today to share a dollar store project perfect for colder weather: turning a dollar store scarf into a cozy pair of leg warmers!  Not only will they keep your dog’s legs toasty on chilly days, but they will also look stylish on walks around the neighborhood!

Project estimate:

  • Scarf, $1
  • Sewing machine, on hand

Total:  $1

How to Make Doggy Legwarmers

by Erika, Sew DoggyStyle

This scarf I actually got at The Dollar Tree.  One Dolla!!!  They have a variety of color combos and I think stripes make adorable leg warmers.  You can virtually make these leg warmers to fit any sized dog.  I made them for my big dog, since leg warmers are kinda for girls…  Haha!

I cut the scarf at every six stripes since that seemed like a good height.  Cut a total of 4 pieces.  For smaller dogs, cut every four stripes…or less.

Serge or zigzag the top and bottom of each piece to keep the threads from unraveling.  Then fold each piece in half lengthwise with right sides together and stitch down the sides.  For smaller dogs, take in the sides as much as needed.  Measure their legs to determine how much needs to be taken in.

Turn each piece right side out and tada!!!
