Here’s a project that just screams “budget wedding!”  Would you believe that this lotus-like pomander ball was made using plain ol’ wax paper?  Carolyn from Carolyn’s Homework created the feathery, translucent decoration using materials that, in summation, are far more than just the humble parts!  I bet it looks incredible with sunlight shining though it.  If you make more than one of these, try using different size foam balls and varied petal sizes for different effects.  [how to make a wax paper pomander ball]

Project estimate:

  • Styrofoam ball, $1
  • Wax paper, on hand or $1
  • String, on hand
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

Have you seen the rose-shaped soaps at Dollar Tree?  They look so pretty and smell so good that it’s easy to see why Desirée of The 36th Avenue was drawn to them.  In need of powder room accessories, she came up with a great crafty idea.  By taking the flowers apart and strategically pinning them to a foam ball (also found at Dollar Tree) she ended up with a pretty kissing ball or pomander type of decoration.  To display this piece, you could mount it on top of a glass candlestick, or if you prefer to hang it you can pin a length of ribbon into it.  (You may also wish to add a touch of glue to the ribbon, just in case!)  [how to make a soap flower ball]

Project estimate:

  • Rose soap petals, $1
  • Styrofoam ball, on hand or $1
  • Pins, on hand or $1

Total:  $1 and up

The dollar store has an entire aisle of faux flowers. I admit, these have stumped me. I am not much of a faux flowers person, so I just never buy them and never make anything with them. This idea, by Holiday Crafts and Creations, is a wedding kissing ball, or pomander. The pomanders shown in this photo are made with handmade paper daisies (awesome!), but the process of making all those paper flowers is way too fussy for me. Instead, I would buy faux flowers at the dollar store and use them to make wedding kissing balls inspired by these. Similar look, but a lot simpler. Use these to decorate for your wedding, as pew decorations, or hanging from a ceiling, awning, or chuppah. You can also carry one as a bouquet (or have your bridesmaids carry them). They’d also make amazing decorations for parties or showers.

Project Estimate (Faux Flower Version):

  • 4” Styrofoam ball, $1
  • 12 brads (for one ball), $1 and up
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1
  • 3 faux flower branches (3 different types: small, medium, and large, in complementary colors), $3
  • 35 – 40 pearl head pins (for one ball): 6mm, $1
  • X-acto knife
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Total: $5 and up
