Faux Succulent Sleigh Centerpieces

This is one of those ideas that just came together serendipitously, and I love how these little succulent-filled sleighs turned out. Ever since they started selling faux succulents in the floral department at Dollar Tree I’ve been keeping an eye out for things I could fill with them. Over the course of the summer I kept coming across little sleigh-shaped baskets, and I knew they’d be great for making succulent-y holiday decor!

Succulent Sleighs 1

Project estimate:

  • Sleigh basket, $1 and up
  • Styrofoam block, $1 and up
  • Spanish moss, $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Faux succulents, about $3 and up
  • Faux berry floral embellishments, $1 and up
  • Ribbon (optional), on hand or $1 and up

Total: $6 and up

Succulent Sleighs 2

To form a base for adding the succulents and other floral embellishments, you will need a block of foam. This block of foam was large enough to use for both of my sleigh baskets.

Succulent Sleighs 3

Use a sharp serrated blade to cut the Styrofoam down to size. I used my FloraCraft foam cutter. This will get messy, so cover your work area before you start cutting!

Succulent Sleighs 4

Glue Spanish moss over the foam.

Succulent Sleighs 5

Apply glue to the stems of the succulents and press them into the foam to make your arrangement. Start with bigger succulents first, then fill the spaces between with smaller succulents.

Succulent Sleighs 6

To give an extra holiday touch, I added some bits of faux berry floral sprigs. I found these at Michaels, and while the regular price on them is $1.99 per stem, I got them on sale for $0.59 each! I cut the sprigs into smaller sections, added some glue to the stems, and pressed them into the foam randomly around the succulents

Succulent Sleighs 7

Optionally, embellish the sleigh with a bit of ribbon.

Coastal decor is a great way to incorporate beach items into your decorating, and summertime is the perfect time for maritime themed items. Here's how you can take an old fish bowl and turn it into a catalog worthy centerpiece, for just a few bucks.

Even though I don’t live near the ocean, I’m an island girl at heart.  I absolutely love the ocean, hearing the waves, and spending days on the beach.  Since the beach is several hours away I have to settle for bringing a bit of the beach home.

Coastal decor is a great way to incorporate beach items into your decorating, and summertime is the perfect time for maritime themed items.  Here’s how you can take an old fish bowl and turn it into a catalog worthy centerpiece, for just a few bucks.

diy centerpiece

Project estimate:

  • Fish Bowl – on hand or $1 and up
  • Metal Decorative Strip – $4
  • Candle – on hand
  • Sand and shells – on hand

Total:  $5 and up

I found the decorative metal strip at Michael’s craft stores.  It’s easy to cut and work with, but you’ll need super glue to hold it together!  The sand and shells were part of my craft stash, but I have seen decorative sand at Dollar Tree.

supplies

Step one:  Cut the metal strip to fit the top and bottom of the bowl.  Use super glue to adhere the two ends together.  I used tape to hold the ends together while the glue set.

step 1

Step two:  Fill the bowl with decorative sand or small gravel, and place a candle in the center.  I used a battery operated candle so I wouldn’t end up with melted wax all over my shells later.

step 3

Step three:  Fill the space around the candle with shells and other sea items.

beachy centerpiece

This simple fish bowl is completely transformed when you add the metal strip.  I’ve seen bowls like this go for over $20 in catalogs!  These centerpieces would look great at any summer party, and you could inexpensively make several at one time.  Change them up a little by adding decorative stones instead of sand, or use sea glass instead to add a little color.  Have fun crafting, creating, and decorating!

Designer Inspired Succulent Centerpiece - As a budget crafter, it's fun to make my own version of an expensive items for pennies. I had seen faux succulent centerpieces at a home decor store and knew I had to make it myself.

Over at the DollarStoreCrafts.com’s Best Ideas we started sharing our versions of expensive floral items we had seen at big name stores.  As a budget crafter, it’s fun to make my own version of an expensive items for pennies.  I had seen faux succulent centerpieces at a home decor store and knew I had to make it myself.

Project estimate:

  • Glass jars, on hand
  • Burlap and lace, on hand
  • Plastic succulents, $1 and up
  • Mod Podge, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

supplies succulent

Step one:  Remove labels from jars and clean.  I left one jar clear and tinted the other one.  I used Mod Podge that was tinted, but you can make your own by simply mixing a bit of food coloring or alcohol ink with regular Mod Podge.  Coat the inside of the jar with tinted Mod Podge and let it dry.

step 2 paint

Step two:  Wrap a piece of burlap around the jar.  I used hot glue to hold it in place.

step 1 wrap

Step three:  Wrap a piece of lace around the burlap and glue in place.

knock off centerpiece

All that’s left to do is fill the jar with your favorite plant or flower.  I used succulents because I was copying the store item, but these would look just as pretty with flowers or decorative branches inserted.  These decorated jars would look great on a mantle, or make pretty centerpieces for a party.  Have fun crafting and creating!

DIy Table Runner

Like a lot of you, I’m crazy about burlap!  It’s such a versatile fabric that can be used in so many ways.  I wanted to add some color and pattern to my table with a new table runner, so I reached for natural and colored burlap to make my own.  The beauty of making it yourself is that you control everything, from the color to the pattern to the size, to make the perfect piece for your home.

Stenciled Burlap Table Runner DIY

Project Estimate:

  • Burlap – $2
  • Burlap ribbon in red – $3
  • Fabric Glue – on hand
  • Stencil – on hand
  • Paint – on hand
Total:  $5

step 1
Step one:  Cut the burlap and two strips of burlap ribbon.  The length and width will be determined by the size of the table and your personal preference.

Step two:  Attach the ribbon to the burlap using fabric glue.  I placed a large plastic bag under my project to protect my work surface.

step 2astep 2b

Step three: Tape your stencil onto the center strip of burlap fabric.  Use a foam roller to quickly apply paint over the stencil.  I used a multi-purpose paint, which works nicely on fabric.  I like using a mini foam roller so the paint doesn’t bleed under the stencil, and so I can have crisp edges on my stenciled design.

step 4

Repeat your stenciled design until the desired pattern is complete, and allow it to dry.

This quick project will instantly brighten your table!  It’s such a simple craft that you can make several to decorate multiple tables for a party.  You could also make them in different colors or patterns for different holidays.  Have fun crafting and creating!

Yes, you can make this beautiful silk Thanksgiving centerpiece and use it for years to come!

Today’s tutorial comes to us from Terrie, our forum moderator at the Dollar Store Crafts Facebook group where we invite our readers to share what crafty things they’ve been up to.  If you love dollar store crafting, be sure to join the group to see lots more great ideas like this!

Project estimate:

  • Cardboard, on hand
  • Assorted gourds and pumpkin, about $2
  • Fall leaf garland, $1
  • Faux berries, $1
  • Pine cones, free
  • Piece of felt, on hand or about $0.25
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  about $4 and up!

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

I used an oatmeal box which wasn’t very sturdy so I used the front and back and glued them together.

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Glue the felt on the cardboard so that it covers one side of the cardboard completely. Notice I folded it over about an inch and cut the corners at an angel so they weren’t so bulky.

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Cut some leaves off the garland and randomly glue them on the edges of the cardboard. When you cut the leaves, do so to where they don’t have stems. I used the leaves off two different garlands for a better assortment.

Yes, you can make this beautiful silk Thanksgiving centerpiece and use it for years to come!

Place the largest pumpkins and/or gourds in the center of the cardboard so that they are touching one another. DO NOT use glue yet. Once you have them in the position you like, making sure your centerpiece is pretty on all sides, you can glue them in to place. Pick each one up, add hot glue to the bottom and put it back in place.

Collect all smaller items along with some extra leaves and place them evenly around the centerpiece. Once you are satisfied with their placement, glue them one by one until you are done, just like before. Note: be sure to cover all the felt.

Yes, you can make this beautiful silk DIY Thanksgiving centerpiece and use it for years to come!

You’re finished! Your entire centerpiece is ready for the dining table, coffee table, wherever you need a touch of autumn.  You can make these in different sizes and shapes, this one is round because our cardboard was a square. If you want an oval centerpiece, make your cardboard rectangular.

To store, because it is literally one piece, you can slip it into a clear plastic bag or box and place it on a shelf for next year and years to come.

Designer Tips:

  • Although pizza boxes are ideal to use, do NOT use one that has been used. The pizza aroma will linger in the cardboard for a very long time.
  • Before you use pine cones “from the wild” bake them for one hour in the oven at 175F. This assures that they will be insect free.

Burlap Centerpiece

I love to craft with burlap.  It’s so plain and simple yet versatile, like a good pair of jeans.  You can dress it up or tone it down by pairing it with different craft supplies.  With this project, I used colorful red burlap and added a little bling to make a pretty centerpiece for the holidays.

DIY Burlap Flowers

Project estimate:

  • Burlap, about $2
  • Pail, $1
  • Syrofoam ball, on  hand or $1
  • Rhinestones, on hand or $1

Total:  about $3 and up

Part 1 Burlap Flowers

Step one:  Cut the burlap into three inch squares.

Step two:  Fold the burlap square in half twice.  Hold the folded corner and trim the edges off.  For more detailed cutting instructions, see this post.

part 2 burlap flowers

Step three:  Wrap the styrofoam ball with burlap and place it in the pail.

Step four:  Layer two flowers together, and pin them onto the styrofoam ball.

Step five:  Glue a rhinestone to the center of each flower.

Burlap Flower Centerpiece

I embellished my pail a bit by adding a mini Santa ornament to the front of it.  I love this red burlap, and the color is what inspired me to make poinsettias.  If you want to make this centerpiece for Thanksgiving, you could use natural burlap instead, like I did with the centerpiece pictured below.  This is such a quick, inexpensive project that you could easily make them in lots of colors, and just swap out the burlap flowers as the seasons change!
