Sea Shell Picture Frame Tutorial - Want a unique way to display the shells you collect at the beach this summer? Try making this easy picture frame!

Maybe you brought back a collection of shells from a beach vacation.  Or maybe you bought a bag of them at the dollar store.  Either way, they are great for decor projects!  Want a unique way to display them?  Try making this easy picture frame!  You can fill it with your favorite photos, or you can add a fabric background and use them to display even more shells like a shadowbox.

Project estimate:

  • Picture frame, on hand or $1 and up
  • Assorted seashells, $1 and up
  • Pebbles, on hand or $1
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Placemat or fabric for background (optional), on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $1 and up

sea shell picture frame

Remove the glass and backing. Start gluing the shells onto the top of the picture frame. Use a generous amount of glue. I would glue a shell on one side and then the other, but you can design them any way you like. I used the pebbles for another shape.

Using a sponge paint brush, give the entire frame a generous coat of paint and let completely dry before adding additional coat(s). Hold the frame at different angles so that you cover every bit of visible surface with paint. By using a sponge paint brush, you can squeeze in and get every nook and cranny.

Replace the glass and backing to insert a photo or create your own “picture” out of a fabric background and more shells like I did.

burlap art DIY

Burlap is still hot in home decor, and it’s such a versatile medium to craft with!  I saw these adorable customized monogram prints at Pottery Barn Kids, and decided to make my own version.  I recycled an old art frame and repurposed a burlap bag to create an inexpensive version of a high end product.  Here’s how:

monogram art diy

Project estimate:

  • Burlap, $1
  • Frame, on hand
  • Stencil, on hand
  • Paint, on hand
  • Tape, on hand
  • Hot glue gun, on hand
Total:  $1 and up
step one
Step one:  Place the frame on the burlap and trace the inside of the frame with white chalk.  This will help you keep your project centered.
stencil 1stencil 2
Step two:  Use the stencils and paint to add the monogram and phrase to the burlap.  To avoid paint “bleeding” under the stencil, use a foam roller or pouncer to blot paint onto the surface.  Do several light applications until the color is the way you want it.
glue
Step three:  once the paint has dried, add the burlap the the frame.  I used a hot glue gun to adhere two sides, then I folded the corners like a present before gluing the remaining sides down.
tape framelast step
Step four:  I added the white border last because I wanted to make sure it was centered.  I used washi tape to mark where the line was to go, then painted the burlap with the white paint.
diy burlap art
This custom wall art would look great with a photo wall collage.  It would also make a great anniversary gift, or even a cute customized gift for a new baby.  Since you’re making it yourself, you can put any name, phrase or color you want on it, and make it for a fraction of the name brand’s price!

Make a Rolled Paper Picture Frame

Are you a paper saver?  Do you keep scraps left over from other projects, junk mail, and old magazines?  Here is a great idea for using up some of that stash!  Instructables user Doodlecraft (aka Natalie) rolled up her scrap paper and used it to decorate this fabulous picture frame.  It’s a simple process but it is a little time consuming, so this would be a great project to work on during a movie marathon – entertainment will help to break up the tedium!  If you don’t have the time or inclination to roll up enough paper medallions to cover an entire frame, you could also use this idea to decorate smaller items, like a little trinket box.  The idea would also translate well to jewelry!  [how to make rolled paper picture frames]

Project estimate:

  • Frame, on hand or $1 and up
  • Paint for frame (optional), on hand or $1 and up
  • Paper, on hand
  • Double-sided tape or tape runner, on hand or $1 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  Free and up!

DIY Rock Accent Frame

I recently made some votive candles using items from Dollar Tree.  My sons liked my rocky votive so much that I thought I’d try to make a frame to go with the candle.  I really like the end result.  It’s rugged and perfect for an outdoor patio or a man cave.  Plus, it’s really easy and inexpensive to make, so you could easily make several for all the nature lovers in your life.

You Rock Frame DIY

Project estimate:

  • Frame, $1
  • Paint, on hand
  • Polished rocks, $1
  • Super glue, on hand

Total:  $2

step 1
Step one:  Remove the glass and back from the frame.  Paint your frame a color that is similar to the stones.  If you buy a dark frame you can skip this step!

step 2

Step two:  Use super glue to adhere the stones to the frame.  I started with the outer edge so I could have a straight line, then I worked towards the center.

Step three:  Reassemble the frame and add a favorite photo.  If you’re punny like me, you can print out a favorite saying or quote instead.

DIY Rocky Frame

I used a bag of polished rocks that I purchased at Dollar Tree, but you could make this frame even more personal by adding rocks that were collected on a hike or while on vacation.  You could also use stones that are all the same color to create a different look.   Have fun crafting a creating a one of a kind frame!
