Dollar Store Pumpkin Topiary - Chalkboard

There are so many things you can do with those little foam pumpkins from the dollar store, but this topiary has to be one of the cuter ideas I’ve ever seen. Nobody would guess it was made from dollar store stuff! Get the tutorial over at Kim Six Fix: [Dollar Store Pumpkin Topiary]

Project Materials:

  • 3 foam pumpkins, $3
  • Chalkboard paint, $2 and up
  • Orange feather boas, $1
  • Container (or urn), $1 and up
  • Bamboo skewers, $1

Total: $8

Tip: Look at the thrift store for an urn-like container (you can paint one if it has the right shape), or just use a terra cotta pot.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

We often have readers inquire about what they can do with certain recycled items, including the K-cups from Keurig coffee makers.  Would you believe that this wintery topiary uses them as one of the main supplies?

Don’t worry if you don’t have a Keurig, you can also use Dixie cups or other small cups for this project as well. This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Project estimate:

  • Blue tinsel garland, $1
  • Silver tinsel garland, $1
  • Styrofoam ball, on hand or $1 and up
  • Packing tape, on hand
  • Wired ribbon, on hand or $1
  • Empty wrapping paper tube, on hand
  • Dowel or bamboo stake, on hand or $1 and up
  • Foam snowflakes, $1
  • Battery operated snowflake lights, $1
  • Silver poster board, $1
  • Floral foam, $1
  • Container, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • K-cups, emptied and dry, or small paper cups, on hand or $1
  • Snowflake ornament, on hand or $1

Total:  about $8 and up

frozen topiary container

Cut and hot glue the floral foam to where it is 1″ below the top of your container. Cut extra foam to fill in around the sides.

Fold one of the wrapping paper rolls in half lengthwise and insert it and the dowel into the other roll. The dowel should extend each end by 3 & 1/2″.

frozen topiary

Put a large amount of glue on top of the foam and force the roll into the foam. The roll needs to be straight and strong.

frozen topiary assembly

To keep the styrofoam from melting, wrap it in packing tape, covering it completely. Using a pair of scissors, poke a 3″ hole in the center. Put a large amount of glue on top of the dowel and force the foam ball on top of it down to the top of the roll.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Cover the roll with the piece of poster board and cover the base of the topiary with a piece of tinsel, your choice of color. The tinsel doesn’t need to be glued down, it stays put.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Starting at the top, glue the k-cups around the ball in a symmetrical fashion. My cat did this part.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Put a drop of glue on one end of the blue tinsel and carefully stick it to the ball. Zig zag it around the K-cups evenly until you run out, put a drop of glue on the end and stick it to the ball. At this point, do the same with the silver tinsel, covering the ball.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Take the lights and work them in and around the ball. Put the battery box on the back side.

The foam snowflakes came in three colors: white, medium and dark blue. They also came in different sizes, small and large.  Take the white snowflakes and glue them between the K-cups. Cut some of the large medium and dark blue in half and glue them to the sides of the K-cups.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Glue the blue snowflakes on the bottoms of the K-cups. Glue some of the white, small snowflakes on top of the blue ones to make them stand out.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Cut a slit in the bottom of the top K-cup and glue the large snowflake in the top of the topiary.

This topiary will make a great addition to your holiday decor, and with the use of battery-powered lights you can put it nearly anywhere!

Tie a bow at the bottom and admire your work!

That Shannon over a Madigan Made, she’s such a clever one!  Inspired by some paper shades she’d seen for wine glass candle holders and the cone tree trend that’s been hot lately in blogland, she dug into her scrapbook paper collection and got busy.  The results are stunning!  You can whip these babies up in just a few minutes, and when it’s time to change them out for different decorations you can disassemble them in a matter of seconds.  Perhaps the best part is, you probably have everything you need to make them on hand already!  [how to make wine glass topiary trees]

  • Scrapbook paper, on hand
  • Trimmings, on hand or $1 and up
  • Wine glass, on hand or $1

Have you noticed the great selection of cupcake liners at the dollar store lately? There are tons of cute holiday-themed liners to choose from. You already know I am a baking supplies addict, so you can count on the fact that I have at least one of each style of cupcake liner currently available at the dollar store. These adorable holiday tree decorations were made by Desiree of The 36th Avenue for the Tatertots & Jello blog, and they are so cute, and very thrifty to make. Desiree even formed the bases of the tree out of old 12×12 cardstock (great use for old styles you don’t want to use anymore). [how to make cupcake liner trees] [also visit: the 36th avenue]

These are great Christmas decorations, obviously, but I think they would be fun in other colors for pretty party decorations. You could also put them on top of a candlestick to make topiary-style decorations. You might want to attach them to a saucer or small paper plate before you put them on the candlestick.

Project Estimate:

  • 12×12 cardstock, on hand or $.50
  • 2 packages of cupcake liners, $1 each
  • Glue

Total: $2 and up

Okay, I know most of us are probably still in recovery from last month’s crafty race to the holidays, but it’s time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day!   I love Valentine crafts.  They have a mix of elegance, romance, and cheesy humor to which no other holiday projects can compare.  If you need a little inspiration to kick you in the pants and get you started, here are some great Valentine’s Day projects spotted around the web.

Jeromina from Paper, Plate, and Plane comes up with countless incredible projects, including this heart wall lamp.  She made it using a string of red Christmas lights!   (Yes, I know you just put them away for the season, but this project is totally worth an extra trip to the attic!)  [how to make a Valentine heart wall lamp]

Our friend Jen at Tatertots and Jello posted a tutorial for making Valentine’s Day ruffle balls.  I love their shabby chic look!  I am also smitten with decor balls of all kinds lately.   Filling a bowl or large hurricane with them is such an easy way to decorate, and you can completely change the look by making new balls.   [how to make Valentine’s Day ruffle balls]

Topiaries are another thing I’ve recently become infatuated with.  There are so many possibilities for decorating them!  Over at Krafty Kat, Katharine came up with a cute Valentine’s Day flower topiary using heart picks from  Dollar Tree.  It also makes me think of spring!   [how to make  a Valentine flower topiary]

Also in the realm of topiaries, Karen from Pocket Full of Pink made a fabulous flower pot full of fabric hearts.  The amount of fabric needed is minimal, so you can use  up scraps or remnants.  When it  comes time to embellish them, this is a great project for using up random odd bits of ribbon and leftover buttons.  Yay for stashbusting!  [how to make a Valentine hearts flower pot display]

This pom pom window garland idea by Anna from Noodlehead is simple and whimsical.  I love it!  If it wasn’t for the sneaking suspicion that my kitties would see it as a window-mounted toy (much the same way the Christmas tree was a six-foot, lighted cat toy display), I would be all over this project.  But then again, it’s so inexpensive and easy that I might not mind if it gets annihalated!  [how to make a Valentine’s Day pom pom window garland]

I’ve been loving the decorating-with-candy trend that has been so popular this year.  I think my favorite candy Christmas decor item so far has been this candy cane topiary tree, designed by Courtney from Pizzazzerie.  Her oh-so-sweet creation uses candy canes held in place with special icing  “glue”; her blog post includes a link to the recipe, and you probably have everything you need to make it in your pantry already!  The finished tree would make a whimsical addition to a mantle display or as a focal point on a holiday buffet table.  [how to make a candy cane topiary tree]

  • Candle stick, $1
  • Floral tubes, $1 (look for these at craft stores, or ask your local florist)
  • Glue, on hand
  • Icing, on hand
  • Candy canes (2 sizes), $2 and up

Looking for an inexpensive way to decorate for the holidays, Angie at Have Family, Will PCS made these adorable Christmas frame topiaries using holiday buckets and cute frames. She got her supplies in the dollar bins at Target and Michael’s, but they also have similar supplies at Dollar Tree. Any of these places are great sources for supplies. This cheap and easy craft would be a good one to use for a teacher gift (if you have a photo of your child and the teacher, all the better), or just for a cute way to display Christmas photos. [how to make christmas frame topiaries]
