DIY Skull Lantern

My Halloween decor tends to center largely around skeletons and skulls – I even have a couple of skull themed pieces that stay out year-round as part of my regular decor.  (What can I say?  I have very eclectic taste!)  So it’s no surprise that I am totally in love with this bony candle lantern by Susan at Oh My! Creative.  Inspired by a similar piece from Pottery Barn, this lantern has a ton of spooky character.  I think one of these would look excellent on my bookshelf!  How about you – do you prefer spooky decor or cute decor for Halloween?  Tell us in the comments!  [how to make a glowing skulls lantern]

Project estimate:

  • Cylindrical glass vase, on hand or $1,
  • Plastic skulls, $1 and up
  • Plastic skeletons, $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand
  • Caulk, about $2 and up

Make Scrubby Valentine Votives

One of my favorite things about dollar store crafting is seeing the innovative ideas people come up with for making things out of all kinds of unusual items.  These Valentine votive holders from Mrs. Polly Rogers are one of those projects that make me say, “she made that out of what?!”  The pretty, shiny, glitzy material you see dressing up these candle holders comes from deconstructed dish scrubbers!  (Insert sounds of shock and awe here.)  Now she’s got me wondering what else I could dress up with them.  I’ll never look at those little scrubbies the same way again!  [how to make scrubby Valentine votives]

Project estimate:

  • Dish scrubbers, $1
  • Sauce bowls, 4/$1
  • Glass candlesticks, $1
  • Beads, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand
  • Votive or tea light candles, on hand or $1

Total:  $3 and up

There are so many different ways to decorate for Halloween.  Some people prefer orange and black while others like a more non-traditional combination of purple and green.  Some people like cute decorations, while others want their house to look like the set of a horror movie.  Personally, I am a skeletons-for-Halloween kind of girl; most of my decorations incorporate a boney theme.  If you are a fellow skeleton lover, you will love this idea!  Taryn from Formal Fringe whipped up these spooky skeleton hands using gloves and a Sharpie, creating easy creep factor for her holiday decor.   I think I might make a set of these to line the window sill in my front room to creep out trick-or-treaters!  [how to make spooky skeleton hands]

Project estimate:

  • Latex gloves, $1
  • Sharpie, on hand
  • Glass jars, on hand
  • Batter-operated tea lights, on hand or $1

I love fancy candles and candle holders, so much so that I could easily spend a small fortune amassing a collection.  But why spend a ton of cash when you can take the DIY route for so much cheaper?  Over at Crafts Unleashed, Angie whipped up some punched paper candle wraps that look fancy and expensive, but you can recreate them for as little as a dollar!  She used LED tea light candles tucked inside of wax sleeves that make them look like pillar candles; Dollar Tree sometimes carries battery-operated pillar candles that would also work great for this project.  [how to make punched paper candle wraps]

Project estimate:

  • Paper, on hand
  • Punches, on hand or $1 and up
  • LED pillar candle (or LED tea light and wax candle sleeve), $1 and up
  • Tape, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

My father grew up on a Boy Scout reservation, so when my brother and I were children he shared with us many practical crafts from his own childhood.  One thing I remember doing is making tin can lanterns, much like these ones shared by Amy at Mama Scout.  It’s a kid-friendly project (just be careful of pounding fingers!) that is not only fun but great for developing motor skills as well.  Amy and her kiddo made random designs that remind me of star constellations.  You can also tape a paper template to the can and pound nails through it to create more defined designs.  Leave the cans plain, or dress them up with a coat of spray paint.  You can get so many different looks out of the same simple, free project!  [how to make tin can lanterns]

Project estimate:

  • Tin cans, on  hand
  • Water, on hand
  • Freezer, on hand
  • Nail, on hand
  • Hammer, on hand
  • Tea light candles, on hand or $1

Total:   Free and up

balloon paper lanterns

I am enchanted by these tissue paper lanterns made by Kleas. She used watered-down glue, tissue, and balloons (classic papier-mache style), then when they were dry, punched holes and strung yarn, then hung them from sticks. They are so bright and fun. I bet my kids would have a lot of fun making these! They would also be great wedding or other party decorations. I bet they’d look cute if you used small balloons, too. For safety’s sake, I would use battery operated tea lights inside them, or ooh, what about dismantling those solar lights and putting them inside? [how to make tissue paper lanterns] [via]

Project Estimate:

  • Balloons, on hand or $1
  • Tissue paper, on hand or $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Yarn, on hand
  • Battery-operated tea lights, $1 for 2

Need an elegant, yet simple table decoration for a wedding reception, shower, or birthday party? Look no further than these sweet wine glass candle lamps by Save-On-Crafts via CasaSugar. The materials are simple, as is the process, but the results are fantastic, and will make a big impact on your special event. You can find wine glasses and tea lights (I would go with battery-operated tea lights just because of the paper shade) at the dollar store, and pick up some vellum at your favorite craft store (with your 40% off coupon, of course!) [click here for project instructions]

Project Estimate:

  • Vellum sheets, $2.99/10 sheets
  • Wine glass, $1
  • Battery-operated tea light, 2 for $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Template, free PDF, on hand

Total: $1.79 per light

I have always been in love with cocktail umbrellas (haven’t you?), and I recently found some at the dollar store! I snatched up a couple packages and decided it was time to make another dollar store lamp. This turned out so cute! It looks great even when it’s not lit up. I would love to try making a pendant lamp version as well, but I need to find a cheap pendant lamp kit first (I know they have them at IKEA, but I don’t get over there as much as I get to the dollar store!) I posted my tutorial for making the lamp over at Ohdeedoh. [how to make a cocktail umbrella lamp]

Supplies needed:

  • Styrofoam disc, 6 for $1 ($.17)
  • 2+ packages of cocktail umbrellas, $2 and up
  • Small vase or glass, on hand or $1
  • Battery-operated tealight or other light source, 2 for $1
  • Knife, on hand

Total: $2.67

Well, it’s almost Halloween… I can almost hear the screams of ghouls fading away as “Jingle Bells” gets cued up in every mall across the USA (and possibly other countries, let me know when holiday music starts broadcasting in your country). Soon we’ll go nuts for the Holidays, but first, here are some fantastic last-minute Halloween ideas from readers and contributors (and a couple I spotted in my daily blog rounds). I want to let you all know that I really appreciate all your emails and project tips… thanks so much!

Paper Plate Angel Wings by Amy at Three in a Row: FREE

I love these angel wings that Amy came up with, that cleverly use the fluting on regular old white paper plates to evoke the texture of feathers. So pretty! You probably have some of these paper plates on hand already, so if you need a quick costume, look no further! Also, file this one away for the Holidays, because you might just need to outfit a little angel for some reason.

Quick and Lovely Luminary by Dot at Dabbled: $3

Turn a vase upside down and glue some spooky images inside, light up a battery-operated tea light, and you have a pretty luminary. This idea can be used for any holiday or occasion, depending on what images you use. File it away for all your party-planning gigs.

Gory to Glam Silver Skeletons by Joy at Joys of Home: $1

Joy gave her dollar store skellies a makeover by giving them a shot of silver spray paint and hanging them to her chandelier for an unexpected, yet glam, decoration. You know what else would be fun? Spraying skeletons with a bright fashion color – hot pink or lime green, anyone?

Tippi Hedren “The Birds” Costume by Haley at Wildwood Flwr: $4 for Birds

Haley used Dot’s DIY Raven project to make these creepy birds for her awesome costume! Love love love it!
