beach ball coasters

I’m extremely fortunate to live in a town with a gorgeous, sandy beach, so beach-related decor is always a big hit around here.  As such, I get a little obsessive sometimes about coastal and beach themed craft projects.  But even if you don’t live near the beach, you can bring a bit of whimsical, summer-y flare to your home with these cute beach ball coasters by Jamie at Paint the Gown Red.  It’s a great use for adhesive vinyl, especially of you are looking for a way to use it that doesn’t require a cutting machine!  [how to make beach ball coasters]

Project estimate:

  • Cork coasters, $1 and up
  • Adhesive vinyl, on hand or about $5 and up

Total: $1 and up

Maybe I am showing my age here, but did anyone else have a Gumby toy when they were a kid?  I got hours and hours of entertainment out of mine, bending him into different positions and staging funny little scenes for my own amusement.  You can have that same kind of fun with a Halloween twist if you make one of these adorable, bendable mummies from Camilla at Family Chic.  Imagine a whole set of them having a little party on your mantle, or marching across a window sill, or hanging out amongst the elements of your holiday centerpiece!  [how to make bendable mummies]

Project estimate:

  • Wire, on hand or $1 and up
  • Muslin, $1 and up

I’m always looking for new ways to dress up plain paper lanterns.  (They’re one of my favorite dollar store items!)  Jill from Meet the Dubiens decorated her daughter’s bedroom in a Pottery Barn Kids theme with lots of cute owls and trees.  To compliment the PBK decorations, she made owls out of some paper lanterns that were left over from a birthday party.  If you aren’t into owls, get creative and use the same techniques to make whatever animals you want!  [how to make an owl lantern]

Project estimate:

  • Paper lantern, $1
  • Scrapbook paper, on hand
  • Craft foam, on hand or $1
  • Buttons, on hand
  • Glitter glue, on hand or $1
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

I have to say it again — I adore all things tiny, and these itty-bitty photo frames are no exception!  Whether you’re a scrapbooker or a dollhouse/miniatures fanatic, these wee frames are just too much fun.  Add to that the fact that they are SUPER inexpensive and EASY to make, and it’s a win-win-win situation!!

Project Estimate:

  • embossed foil stickers, 6/$1 (in the scrapbook section)
  • tiny photos (I used Photoshop to shrink mine, and printed at home)
  • double-stick tape, on hand
  • scissors

I started with a sheet of six foil embossed stickers from the dollar store.  They come in a few different metallic tones — this photo shows two of the available tones.

I picked a sticker I thought would make a nice frame and simply cut around the edge I liked.

All the fancy scrollwork around the edges is fun and funky, but not the look I was looking for.  Back to the scissors!

I like the fancy corners!  But, if that isn’t your style either…

…keep cutting and make it even more simple.

I love them all — but the top two are my FAVORITES!

I was surfing around Pinterest (which, by the way, is highly addictive) when I came across this idea that made me gasp a  little.  Combining two things I really like, buntings and paper lanterns, is GENIUS,  and it’s a great stashbusting opportunity to boot!  Kirsty from You Had Me At Bonjour even found a hanging lamp kit for her lantern at IKEA with a turquoise cord that matched her bunting perfectly.  (Reason #1,492 why IKEA is awesomesauce.)  Dollar Tree has paper lanterns in their seasonal section right now…   What are you waiting for??  [how to make a bunting paper lantern]

Project estimate:

  • Paper lantern, $1 and up
  • Scrap fabric, on hand
  • Sewing machine, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

Last weekend we celebrated Buzz’s 6th birthday with a big Despicable Me themed bash.  It was a blast!  We came up with three different games, some great dollar store decor, and some SUPER fun (and less than typical!) party favors.  And, in true Dollar Store Crafts fashion, everything was done on the cheap!  17 kids, 20 t-shirts, 18 squirt guns, 2 fun games, and some paper party decor — not counting cake and snacks, we only spent about $35!  [come see what we did!]

Project Estimate:

  • 4 posterboards, $2
  • crepe paper streamers, $2
  • paper plates, $1
  • plastic tablecloth, $1.25
  • 20 t-shirts, $20
  • t-shirt transfer paper, about $2
  • 18 squirt guns, $6

Total:  about $34.25

It’s no secret — I LOVE Valentine’s Day!  It’s definitely has its place as a romantic holiday… but in my family we have started celebrating it as a sort of sisters’ holiday, too!  My sisters and mom and I all like to do a little Valentine gift exchange.  Anything little, inexpensive, and most important of all CUTE is a definite go as far as gifts.

Today’s project is a covered mini composition book — perfect to stick in your purse for jotting down notes on the go!  Of course you could go with any theme, holiday or otherwise, for these little guys…  They only require a few small scraps of fabric and a bit of velcro.  They are so fun to make, in fact, that I’ve already sewn up a couple dozen!  [click here for the tutorial]

Project Estimate:

  • mini composition notebook, 3/$1
  • fabric scraps, on hand
  • velcro scrap, on hand
  • scrap of cardstock or posterboard (for pattern), on hand

Total:  $0.33!
