Decoupaged Thanksgiving Silverware Holder

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it brings together my entire (and very large) family for some quality time.  And while the traditional Thanksgiving dinner scene shows a family all sitting around one table, our family is so large that not only do we not all fit at one table, we also don’t fit in one room!  For this reason our holiday meals are served buffet-style.  This also means that we don’t have fancy place settings – but that doesn’t mean we can’t still make everything pretty!  Over at Mom Endeavors I shared my contribution to this year’s festivities, a cute little bucket to hold all of the rolled silverware.  It’ll look so festive sitting next to the plates at the beginning of the spread!  [how to make a decoupaged Thanksgiving silverware holder]

Project estimate:

  • Metal bucket, $1
  • Silk leaves, $1
  • Letter stickers, on hand or $1 and up
  • Mod Podge, on hand
  • Silverware, on hand or $1
  • Napkins, on hand or $1
  • Curling ribbon, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

I love novelty napkins.  The only problem I have with them?  They are usually too pretty or fun for me to want to destroy them by wiping my fingers!  Cathie Filian came across some awesome skull napkins and, rather than using them to catch crumbs, she decided to highlight the design by crafting with them instead!  With a little Mod Podge action she secured them to a glass plate, making a fun and eye-catching piece that is perfect for serving up holiday treats.  With the variety of novelty napkins available, you can tweak this project for nearly any occasion!  [how to make a Halloween skull plate]

Dollar store craft: Designer decoupaged candles using Vera Bradley napkins and candles from the dollar store

Dress up your plain battery-operated candles with a pretty designer treatment. Over at Crafting Rebellion, The Rebel Crafter decoupaged some pretty Vera Bradley paper napkins to inexpensive dollar store candles – and these candles are flameless, so you can use them forever. [how to make designer decoupaged candles]

As of the writing of this post, paper napkins at Vera Bradley are less than $5 a package, which will make at least 20 candles! This would be a great bridal shower favor. Of course, you can scour the paper goods section at your local dollar store (or even Target), and find cool napkins for $1 and up.

Project Estimate:

  • Battery-operated candle, $1
  • Paper napkins, $1 and up
  • Mod Podge, on hand

Total: $2 and up

Two-Layer Crepe Paper Streamers: $2

I absolutely adore this idea from Heidi at My Paper Crane. She sewed two strands of crepe paper streamers together and they gathered into ruffly wonder-streamers. I think this would be knock-out at any kind of party from Cinco de Mayo to birthdays to showers of any sort. I love how Heidi used multiple colors of streamers – so pretty and colorful! Get the lowdown on her technique for making these streamers at My Paper Crane.

Napkin Dress: $2

Learn how to make these adorable napkins that look like little dresses – great idea for baby or wedding showers. Get the tutorial at How Does She?

Dessert Tray: $2

Here’s an idea a lot of my readers love and have done really well: a dessert stand. You can make a permanent stand, like Tara in the ATL did with
E6000
glue, or you can use a hot glue gun to make temporary stands for parties (but you can remove the glue later to return the dishes back to their original state–great for your grandma’s antique dishes). Check out Tara’s project here.

Cupcake Tree: $10 or less (depending on what you have on hand)

Sarah at I Blame Mom made this big cupcake tree with cake decorating cardboards, cake risers, wrapping paper and ribbon, but you could do it with stuff from your recycling bin and the dollar store. Get her tutorial here.

Paper Doily Tablecloth: $2 and up

I love this quick idea: tape a bunch of paper doilies together to make a pretty tablecloth. The dollar store always has a lot of doilies on hand in the wedding section or the kitchen section (and sometimes the seasonal sections, depending on the time of year). Info found over at Apartment Therapy.

Rolled Paper Flowers: $1 and up

Aren’t these paper flowers charming? They’d be so pretty as table decorations at a party. Hmm, wouldn’t ribbon versions be so pretty as a brooch? Get the info at Talk Crafty To Me.

Mexican Paper Flowers: $1 and up

And for another kind of paper flower, check out these Mexican-style paper flowers by Charcoal Designs.
