There are a zillion ways to make paper flowers – one of our favorite methods is this simple process using coffee filters!  This is a great project for budget wedding decor, or cheap decor for your house, since coffee filters come in large packages for cheap.

Project estimate:
  • Coffee filters, on hand or $1
  • Food coloring, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Poster board, on hand or $1
Total: Free and up

Dye the coffee filters in groups of 25 in the colours you want.  Experiment using one at a time allowing it to dry so you will know the exact colour.  To dye a filter two colours, dip the bottom part into the colouring and let it completely absorb the colour.  After about thirty seconds, remove and turn it over and dip it into your second colour.  Remove the filters and place them on a surface covered with plastic with a layer of newspaper on top.  Let dry until the filters start to separate and take them apart to dry on the newspaper.

Stack five filters on top of one another.  Using scissors, cut in a circular pattern as shown.
image_5
Take one filter and fold it over to where it has about a three inch “tail”.
image_6
Start rolling the filter towards your body with both hands.  Once you reach the end, put a small spot of hot glue to hold the end to the “bud”.
image_7
Cut the tail off and generously hot glue it to one of the square pieces of the poster board.
image
Put a small dot of hot glue on the end of three filters.  Put a dot of hot glue on the end and glue it to the base of the bud.  Roll the three pieces around about four times and add another spot of glue at the base of the bud.  This will keep the filters from unwinding and will start to shape your rose.

Repeat Step 6 until your rose is large enough.  If you’re making larger than normal roses, you will need larger pieces of poster board.

Once your rose is finished, trim off the excess poster board and your rose is ready to use in your design.

One of my favorite things about fall is mums!  I look forward to them every year.  If you love mums too, then check out these gorgeous ones made out of crepe paper by Lia Griffith.  I love all of her paper flower projects, and these are particularly fabulous!  They are made using sheets of crepe paper, which you can find in the gift wrap or party decor sections of many stores; if you can’t find the full sheets, you could use streamers to make a smaller version of these.  [how to make crepe paper mums]

  • Wire, on hand or $1
  • Floral tape, $1 and up

When I buy paper doilies, I often find myself needing just a few of them at the moment, and then I have the dozens of extras left over.  Next time I have a surplus of doilies to use up, I think I’ll whip up a bouquet of these cute roses from Activity Village!  You could even use colored doilies or paint white doilies before making your flowers to make a brighter bouquet.  Mix these in with other paper flower designs for a bouquet that would be great for a centerpiece or even a wedding!  [how to make doily roses]

As far as I am concerned, spring can’t get here soon enough this year. After a year of record-breaking snowfall, I am ready for grass and flowers. If you just any wait any longer to see some flora, why not make some yourself? Instructables user Muhaiminah Faiz came up with these phenomenal flower spikes that remind me of hyacinths – one of my springtime favorites! You could even spritz them with a little bit of body spray or perfume to give them a flowery fragrance. [how to make curly paper flowers]

Two-Layer Crepe Paper Streamers: $2

I absolutely adore this idea from Heidi at My Paper Crane. She sewed two strands of crepe paper streamers together and they gathered into ruffly wonder-streamers. I think this would be knock-out at any kind of party from Cinco de Mayo to birthdays to showers of any sort. I love how Heidi used multiple colors of streamers – so pretty and colorful! Get the lowdown on her technique for making these streamers at My Paper Crane.

Napkin Dress: $2

Learn how to make these adorable napkins that look like little dresses – great idea for baby or wedding showers. Get the tutorial at How Does She?

Dessert Tray: $2

Here’s an idea a lot of my readers love and have done really well: a dessert stand. You can make a permanent stand, like Tara in the ATL did with
E6000
glue, or you can use a hot glue gun to make temporary stands for parties (but you can remove the glue later to return the dishes back to their original state–great for your grandma’s antique dishes). Check out Tara’s project here.

Cupcake Tree: $10 or less (depending on what you have on hand)

Sarah at I Blame Mom made this big cupcake tree with cake decorating cardboards, cake risers, wrapping paper and ribbon, but you could do it with stuff from your recycling bin and the dollar store. Get her tutorial here.

Paper Doily Tablecloth: $2 and up

I love this quick idea: tape a bunch of paper doilies together to make a pretty tablecloth. The dollar store always has a lot of doilies on hand in the wedding section or the kitchen section (and sometimes the seasonal sections, depending on the time of year). Info found over at Apartment Therapy.

Rolled Paper Flowers: $1 and up

Aren’t these paper flowers charming? They’d be so pretty as table decorations at a party. Hmm, wouldn’t ribbon versions be so pretty as a brooch? Get the info at Talk Crafty To Me.

Mexican Paper Flowers: $1 and up

And for another kind of paper flower, check out these Mexican-style paper flowers by Charcoal Designs.
