Have you ever wished for a piece of cake that had no calories?  Well, wish no more!  Believe it or not, these slices of cake are actually made out of ordinary household sponges.  They would make great gifts or party decorations.  Or use them as treats for a make-believe tea party!

faux sponge cake

Project estimate:

  • Sponges, $1 and up
  • Scraps of foam board, on hand
  • Paint, on hand
  • White silicone caulk, about $2 and up
  • Cake decorating kit, $1 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  about $4 and up

faux sponge cake

With scissors, cut the sponges into the shapes you want. I wanted my slices to be double layers, so I cut two of each.

faux sponge cake

Cut a piece of foam board that is just a bit more narrow than the pieces of sponge. This will separate the layers and allow you to put frosting between them. Glue the foam board in the middle of the sponges, I used hot glue.

faux sponge cake

Paint the sides of the sponges. The easiest way to do this is to use a sponge brush and press the paint into the sponge. I painted the chocolate slices three times. The pink cake I used a pink sponge and only painted one coat because I wanted the pink to show through. Even if your sponge is the colour that you want your cake, paint it. It will look much more realistic.

faux cake frosting

Now you’re ready to frost your cakes. I would strongly recommend buying a dollar store cake decorating kit, accidents happen and the silicone will dry pretty hard. Use the silicone just as you would frosting.

faux sponge cake

I will not presume to tell you how to frost a cake. I will, however, tell you that the thicker you apply the “frosting” the longer it will take to set up.

faux sponge cake

Time to paint the frosting! I used acrylic paint that I purchased from the dollar store. The colour I used on the dark chocolate slice was Burnt Umber. For the frosting I added white for milk chocolate. For the white frosting, I didn’t do anything because the silicone is so realistic on its own.

Make a Wicker Cake Stand

Wicker is one of those classic looks that I don’t think will ever go out of style!  If you are a wicker lover, then you will absolutely fall in love with this cake stand idea from Diane at In My Own Style.  The use of wicker gives it a very picnic-y feel that is perfect for outdoor entertaining, and it brings an element of fanciness to a spread while still being casual enough for everyday occasions.  (It’s so easy to make that it would be great as a last-minute hostess gift as well!)  [how to make a wicker cake stand]

One day a while back I was scrubbing some lime scale off of my kitchen faucet (exciting, right?) when I looked down at the sponge in my hand it made me think of cake.  A little weird, I know.  (Alright, so maybe I was a little PMS-y that day too.  Chances are at that point almost anything would have reminded me of a dessert.)  When I found thin sponge cloths at Dollar Tree a few days later, the dollhouse-obsessed side of my crafty personality got a little excited.  This tiny cake isn’t any more edible than the sponge that inspired it, but it sure does look a lot yummier!

Project estimate:

  • Sponge cloths, $1
  • Wooden disc, on hand or $1 and up
  • Button, on hand
  • Paint, on hand
  • Craft knife, on hand
  • Mod Podge, on hand
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

My sponge cloths came in three colors: orange, blue, and yellow.  You could make a crazy colorful cake, but I used the yellow sponge for my cake so it would look more traditional.  Cut three one-inch circles out of the sponge.  Seal each circle of sponge with Mod Podge, which will prevent your paint “frosting” from soaking into the sponge.

Mix equal parts Mod Podge and craft paint in the color you want your frosting to be.  Paint a thick layer onto the top of each circle.

Stack the three circles together to form your cake.  (To make a cake with more layers, just keep adding circles until it reaches the height you want!)

Paint more of the mixture around the outside of the stack so that your cake is completely frosted.  Let it dry overnight.

Cut a wedge-shaped slice out of the cake with a craft knife.  (It’s easiest to cut the cake if you flip it upside-down and work from the bottom.)  Brush a layer of Mod Modge over the exposed sponge to protect it.

To make a serving tray for the cake and a plate for the slice, you need a 1 1/2 inch wooden circle and a button.

Paint both pieces if desired.  I painted both of mine white because I was feeling all matchy-matchy.

Glue the cake and slice to the pieces you just painted with some strong glue.  (I used Amazing Goop.)  That’s it!  It was a piece of cake, right?

top 10 crafts of 2011

Holy cow, where did 2011 go?  I stopped paying attention for one second and – whoosh!  – it was gone!  It’s been a crazy year for DSC, and some of our posts went completely viral!  We’ve gained so many new readers this year that it makes our heads spin, and you’ve made it clear which projects you love most.  Taking a look back, here are our top 10 posts of 2011.

10.  Reconstructed Clothing Roundup: 5 Ways to Revamp a T-shirt

Knowing that budgets were tight this year, we presented you with five different ways to bring new life to tire old t-shirts.  And you loved them!  [read the post]

9.  Make Reusable Swiffer Covers

Swiffers are great, but the refills are expensive and not at all eco-friendly.  Making your own reusable swiffer covers is one way to both save money and reduce your environmental impact – everybody wins!  [read the post]

8.  Recycle a Soda Bottle into a Coin Purse

One of several crafts making a repeat appearance from last year’s top posts list, this project was DSC’s second most popular in 2010.  However unlike last year, it’s the only recycled craft to make the top 10 list.  Is recycled crafting going out of style?  We hope not!  [read the post]

7.  Make a Pebble Mat

In what might be the number one coincidence I’ve seen all year (or at least all day), this post also came in at number seven on last year’s list.  Crazy, right?  There’s a store near my town that sells these as placemats and table runners, and they are cool but pretty expensive.  This version, however, is much more affordable!  [read the post]

6.  Make a Beaded Chandelier

Falling two spots from its place at number four on last year’s list, this is still one of our most popular projects ever.  Heather did a fabulous job with the tutorial, and you won’t believe how easy it is to make your own!  [read the post]

5.  Make Water Balloon Candle Holders

We love projects that have a big “wow” factor, looking elegant and expensive on practically no budget.  (Of course, if you’re here, you probably already know that!)  This is one of those kind of projects.  Even though this post dates back to 2009, it’s gotten some serious attention from social bookmarking sites this year.  [read the post]

4. Make an Alien Abduction Lamp

As last year’s number one post, it’s no surprise that this project is still wildly popular.  It’s another of Heather’s awesome creations and it’s gotten linky love from all corners of the web.  Will it be just as well-loved in 2012? [read the post]

Pumpkin Patch Cake

Last year after making my “How Candy Corn Was Made” cake [see it here], I had some extra cake batter and frosting leftover. I decided to make a cute little pumpkin patch cake using a tiny bread loaf pan my mother-in-law had as part of a play set when she was little!

Project estimate:

  • Leftover cake batter, on hand
  • Leftover frosting, on hand
  • Pretzels, on hand or $1
  • Pumpkin candies and candy corn, on hand or $2

Total:  Free and up

Steps:

  1. Bake a pumpkin cake in a loaf pan (if you have a small one, this works best for this cute little patch!)
  2. Frost cake with green icing
  3. Using a small round tip, create “grass” on top of the cake with green icing
  4. Break small pretzel sticks in half, and put them around the outside of the cake to create the fence
  5. Place store bought or home-made (mine are home-made) pumpkin candies on top of the grass (NOTE: I melted colored white chocolate in another of the play set pans over hot water. It was a complete experiment, but I think it turned out pretty well! I used frosting for the stems)
  6. Surround your patch with candy corn
  7. Take a picture, show others, then eat!

Melinda's Cake

Last Halloween I saw Wilton’sHow Candy Corn is Born Cake” and fell in love. Then I realized I didn’t have the checkerboard cake pan set it required. So, I got crafty and decided that a pumpkin cake would have to do, and that I could still decorate the outside to look the same.

Project estimate:

  • Pumpkin Cake Mix, $2.00
  • Cream Cheese Frosting (home-made), around $5 for supplies
  • Food Coloring, on hand

Total cost: $7 or less

Wilton Cake

I also saved myself a few hours. Instead of using stars all over, I just spread my colored cream cheese frosting into three circles. The effect when you cut the cake is still there, and I had diverted two problems at once! Plus, mine was very tasty, and all those extra candies would have just gotten in the way of my family devouring it!

This Mind-Blowing Cake Decorating Tip Changed My Life

I am not much of a cook, but I like everything that has to do with baking — as long as it’s easy. (Doesn’t sound much different than my philosophy of crafting, does it??) I love making cakes and cupcakes, and I think homemade frosting tastes best, BUT I have avoided making my own frosting for the past couple years for one reason. I HATE filling and cleaning icing bags! It’s such a mess, and it never quite works as well as I want it to, and it’s just generally a nuisance. Instead, I usually buy those readymade frosting sprayers at the grocery store because it just seems easier.

No more. I have found the greatest trick for filling icing bags! This idea is so mindblowing that I actually said “WOW” out loud when I watched this video by Karen’s Cookies. Then I made my husband watch the video, and he agreed that it was an awesome tip. You will never avoid using an icing bag again! Thanks to Ashley Newman, who found this video. Watch it below to learn the secret.

Project Estimate:

  • Icing bag & tips, on hand
  • Plastic wrap, on hand

Total: Free

As crafty as I am and as hard as I may try, I’m really not very good at decorating cakes.  I’ve made several attempts in the past that all ended in frustration and additional respect for people who have crazy cake decorating skills, like my sister-in-law who can pipe roses in her sleep.   If you want to make a plain cake look fabulous but don’t have the patience or confidence to try anything too fancy, try making this korker ribbon cake banner by Tricia at Sweeter Than Sweets.  She shows how to korker grosgrain ribbon, a process that makes the ribbon hold a tight, spiraling curl.  By using ribbons in different colors you can customize your banner to coordinate with any holiday or party theme!  [how to make a korker cake banner]

Looking for a unique focal point for a dessert table at your next gathering?  Try out this project; everyone will be buzzing about the results!  Lisa from The Enchanted Oven had a hankering to make something out of rice krispie treats and decided that a beehive would be a fairly foolproof idea.  Don’t worry if you don’t fancy yourself to be much of a sculptor; Lisa’s construction method is super easy.  (If anyone out there is planning a Winnie the Pooh themed party, this absolutely must go on your to-do list!)  [how to make a rice krispie treat beehive]
