Patriotic Wreath

It’s always a good time for showing off your patriotic pride!  Whether you use it to display for patriotic holidays, you show it in support of a national sports team, or you just want to add a bit of red, white, and blue to your decor, this American flag inspired bandana wreath is a fabulous way to dress up any wall or door.

Project estimate:

  • Pool noodle wreath form with red noodle, $1 (see Pool Noodle Wreath Form Tutorial)
  • Bandanas (red, white, and blue), about $5 and up
  • Straight pins, on hand
  • Black zip ties or rubber bands, on hand or $1 and up
  • Mod Podge or white glue, on hand or $1
  • Poster board, on hand or $1
  • White felt, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  about $6 and up

patriotic bandana wreath

Cut all the bandanas in half.

Starting with the first stripe, which is red, fold each bandana as shown above.

Lay the wreath on top of it, gather the ends and hold it close to the wreath.  Fold over any edges that show the wrong side of the bandana.

Patriotic Bandana Wreath

Attach a zip tie as close to the wreath as possible. Cut off the excess.  Continue doing this until you have placed all thirteen stripes.

Take one of the blue bandana halves and pin it to the wreath so that the red pool noodle won’t show through.

The blue bandanas will be folded slightly different and won’t use as many. Cover the rest of the wreath using the same technique with the blue bandanas as you did with the stripes.

Draw stars or print off some from the Internet. I used three different sizes.  Cut them out of the poster board and brush on white glue.  Lay them face down on the white felt and place a heavy object on them while they are drying.  The poster board backing will give the stars structure so they don’t get floppy!  After the glue dried, cut out the stars.

Patriotic Bandana Wreath

Pour somewhite glue or Mod Podge in a bowl and add some hot water. Mix with the glue in the bowl.  Using the sponge brush, apply it to the outside edges of the wreath on the bandanas. This will keep the bandanas from drooping.

Hot glue the stars to the blue area to finish the design.

Patriotic Mini Flower Pots

I love the 4th of July. My father, brother and both grandfathers served in the military, instilling in me a huge passion for this wonderful country I live in. I bought these super cute mini terracotta pots the last time I was at the Dollar Store and I was excited to make something patriotic out of them. What’s fun about this craft is it can serve so many different purposes with just a few simple changes; by varying the paint scheme, they will work for almost any occasion!

Patriotic Mini Flower Pots

Project estimate:

  • Mini terracotta pots, 3 for $1
  • Styrofoam balls, on hand or $1
  • Craft paint, on hand
  • Glue, on hand
  • Glitter, on hand or $1

Total: $1 and up

Patriotic Mini Flower Pots

Using the knife cut two of the Styrofoam balls in half. You’ll have on extra half. After you cut them use the knife to clean up the edges and make them smooth.

Patriotic Mini Flower Pots

Patriotic Mini Flower Pots

To make gluing and covering in glitter easier I inserted the knife tip into the bottom of the ball half. It will keep you from getting glitter and glue all over your fingers and make it easier to get everything covered evenly. Once all halves are covered allow to dry. (Quick side note: I found these awesome food trays at Goodwill and they have made the best base for crafting. It helps keep all the materials in one place. Perfect for crafting with kids. If you find some snatch them up – you won’t regret it!)

Patriotic Mini Flower Pots

This is where you can get very creative if you would like. I did simple red, white and blue stripes, but you can decorate however you want. Once the paint has dried. Place the glitter half, balls on the top. You may secure with a glue gun if you would like of simply push into pots to secure. Place a flag or other item on the top.

Patriotic Mini Flower Pots

Here’s another example of what you can make with these. I cut small slits in the top and placed cards in them to label items at your 4th of July barbeque. They would also work well as placecard holders!

Patriotic Candle Holders - constellations and stripes

A couple of us DSC girls have been involved with a site called Crafty Hangouts, where once a month we get the chance to share a craft demonstration via live video feed. This month’s theme was patriotic crafts, and we received some lovely paper crafting supplies to use in our projects. I was immediately drawn to some paper printed with constellations and thought it would make a fun take on “stars and stripes.” I even punched out all of the stars in the constellations so that the light from the candles shines through, creating a really neat effect. Check out all of the details over at Mrs. Greene! [how to make a constellations and stripes patriotic candle holder set]

Project estimate:

  • Paper, about $1
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1 and up
  • Mod Podge, on hand
  • Needle or pin, on hand
  • Glass containers, on hand or $3
  • Battery operated tealights, on hand or $1 and up

Total: about$1 and up

fourth of july wreath

If you made our patriotic windsock project from yesterday, you’re going to have some plastic tablecloth strips leftover. Don’t want to toss them in the trash?  Use them to make this festive last minute wreath! Even if you didn’t make the windsock, this wreath is a quick and easy project.

Project estimate:

  • Paper plate, on hand
  • Red rectangular tablecloth, $1
  • White rectangular tablecloth, $1
  • Blue rectangular tablecloth, $1
  • Scissors, on hand
  • Metallic star shape, $1
  • Star shaped noise maker, $1
  • Hot glue gun and glue, on hand

Total: $5 or less

tablecloths cut into strips

 Step 1: Cut Tablecloths.

Cut the tablecloths into long strips that are 1.5 inches wide.

cut a circle in a paper plate

 Step 2: Make the wreath.

Cut a circle out of the middle of your paper plate. (Don’t worry. It doesn’t have to be perfect.) If your plate is thin, you may want to stack 2-3 plates together.

cut plastic strips

Take one of your tablecloth strips and fold it  into a shorter strip that is about 8 inches long and trim the ends through the loops so that you have a small bundle of 8 inch plastic strips.

fluff plastic strips

Tie the bundle around the paper plate and then pull the pieces apart to fluff them.

red white and blue wreath

Continue tying small bundles of strips around the plate, alternating colors between red, white and blue. To make the colors stand out more, I tied two bundles of each color at a time.

sparkle star noise maker

Step 3: Make the center.

Cut the stars off of the noisemaker. Cut the tab off the bottom as well.

shiny red and blue star

Center a red star from the noise maker in the middle of your metallic star cut out (these came in packs of 5 at my local dollar store) and attach with hot glue.

fourth of july wreath

Use hot glue to attach the points of the star to the wreath before hanging on your door!
