Make a Stenciled Halloween Towel

The other day I wandered around Dollar Tree on a mission to find Halloween crafting materials.  The trip ended with me walking around the entire store and tossing every orange item I could find into my cart.  Among those items was an orange “bar mop” towel, all soft and fuzzy and microfiber-y.  When the idea struck to stencil it with a Jack-o-lantern face I knew it would be cute, but it turned out even better than I expected!  Over at Mrs. Greene I shared the instructions for this project – you won’t believe how quick and easy these are to make!  [how to make a stenciled Halloween towel]

  • Spray adhesive, on hand or about $5 and up
  • Masking tape, on hand or $1 and up
  • Newspaper, on hand
  • Spray paint, on hand or $1 and up

One thing I have learned about holiday decorations to use in Halloween crafts at Dollar Tree is that they go fast But there is also something else I have learned about holiday decor:  that you can make it out of almost anything!  Mollie’s Mom made this adorable Halloween Craft — a Jack-o-lantern totem pole out of things that you can find year-round, using items like burner covers and serving platters to create an array of silly pumpkin faces. Turn this into a family project by having each family member paint their own pumpkin face!  [how to make a pumpkin totem pole]

Whether you are hosting a Halloween party for adults or for children, this is a fun idea that guests of all ages will enjoy!  Nat and Holly from My Sister’s Suitcase came up with a way for everyone to customize their own drinks, turning them into Jack-o-lanterns that can be consumed at the party, or sent home as favors.  They used orange soda to create their pumpkin bottles, but you could also use orange juice or any other appropriately-colored beverage.  [how to make Jack-o-lantern soda bottles]

pumpkin twins craft

This twin pack of jack-o’-lanterns is double the fun! Give these Halloween cuties to your favorite dynamic duo, or award as a door prize for best couples costume at your Halloween party. With a few recycled supplies, some cute cupcake liners and some egg-like goodies, this is a simple and fun craft to make in the few days counting down to Halloween.

This Halloween craft features EOS lip balm spheres, which I like because they aren’t your typical sugary treat, and are a low-priced “nice” gift. I plan on giving this one to my son’s teacher as a thank you. If you don’t want to use EOS spheres, substitute blown eggs, or candy-filled plastic Easter eggs (if you have any in your stash this time of year!).

Supplies: You can get EOS lip balm spheres at your local big box or drug store, or at Amazon.com. If you choose to use blown eggs, follow the instructions at The Artful Parent: How to Make Blown Eggs. Dye your eggs orange. Or, if you have some old plastic Easter eggs on hand, fill them up with candy and use them to make the Jack-o’-Lantern Twins.

Materials:

  • Cardboard egg carton, on hand
  • Mini cupcake liners (we used two coordinating styles in black and white), $1 and up
  • Self-stick craft foam, on hand or $1
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1
  • Glue (hot glue or tacky glue), on hand
  • Scissors, on hand
  • 2 orange eggs: I used EOS spheres (medicated tangerine), about $3.38 at Amazon: EOS Tangerine Medicated Lip Balm Sphere

Total: $8 and up
Instructions:

1. Cut two joined cups from an egg carton and trim sides. Make sure you leave the two cups joined together.
2. Glue ribbon handle to either side of the egg carton. Allow glue to dry.
3. Cut down the side of one cupcake liner and cut the bottom off. Glue around the outside of one egg carton cup. Repeat for second egg carton cup.
4. Glue a whole cupcake liner to the outside of each egg carton cup. You should now have a double-layer of cupcake liners on the outside of each egg carton cup.
5. Turn two cupcake liners inside-out, and glue to inside of each egg carton cup.
6. Cut jack-o’-lantern features from self-stick craft foam.
7. Stick facial features on eggs.
8. Put eggs in egg carton cups.

You just need a few simple dollar store materials, and this jack-o-lantern container can be made in just minutes. A custom bowl makes it easy to give a great Halloween favor to teachers, friends, or co-workers. Fill the bowl with your favorite orange goodie. • Scissors
  • Orange vase filler: Candy or orange EOS spheres, about $3.38 each at Amazon.com: EOS Tangerine Medicated Lip Balm Sphere

A few days ago I was wandering around Dollar Tree looking for things that might be useful for Halloween crafts.  I came upon a shelf full of curvy, round vases, and immediately thought they would make cute Jack-o-lanterns.  With a little yarn and some felt, vase is now much more festive!  Use one to hold flowers, a candle, or some sweet treats!  You could also use white yarn and googly eyes to make a matching mummy vase!

Project estimate:

  • Vase, $1
  • Orange yarn on hand or $1 and up
  • Black felt, on hand or about $0.33
  • Glue, on hand
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $1 and up

Start by flipping your vase upside-down and making a bead of glue all the way around the bottom edge.  Press the end of the yarn into the glue and wrap it all the way around; let the glue dry before moving on.

Wrap the yarn in a spiral around the vase, adding a dab of glue every few inches to keep the yarn held firmly in place.

Continue wrapping until you have reached the top of the vase.

Cut Jack-o-lantern features out of a piece of black felt.

Glue the features onto the yarn-wrapped vase.

Trim the top of the vase with a ribbon tied in a pretty bow, which adds a finishing touch and also covers the end of your yarn.  Now all that’s left to do is find the perfect place to display it!
