Centsational Girl (aka Kate) likes to spookify little bits and pieces of her house for Halloween, working while her kids are at school to give them a fun surprise when they arrive home.  This year, having recently painted some built-in bookcases white, she decided that it would be the perfect place to add a bit of black and make a holiday display that really stands out.  Her finishing touch to tie the whole display together is a set of glittery spider webs.  Love them?  You’ll be happy to know that you probably already have everything you need to make your own hanging out in your craft room!  [how to make glitter spider webs]

Yes, pretty things can come from humble materials!  This chandelier by Jamie from The Letter 4 is a similar idea to a faux capiz shell chandelier in its use of wax paper circles, but it has a playful, colorful twist:  crayon shavings!  It’s the perfect addition to a nursery or child’s room, and they can even help by sharpening their crayons.  This reminds me of “stained glass” art that I used to make with wax paper and crayon shavings when I was a kid, and it was always one of my favorite activities!  [how to make a wax paper and crayon chandelier][via Dollar Store Mom]

Project estimate:

  • Wax paper, on hand or $1
  • Lamps shade frame or wire basket, $1 and up
  • Crayon shavings, on hand
  • Iron, on hand
  • Thread, on hand

Total:  $1 and up

I’ve been on a skull crafting roll! After I made glitter skull pins in my silicone ice cube tray the other day, a friend inquired about getting a pair as earrings or barrettes. The skulls were a little heavy and large for that, so I decided to try making some smaller ones. I had some silicone clay called Sugru in my stash, as well as some skull rings left over from last Halloween’s trick-or-treating, so I tried something completely new to me: making my own silicone skull mold! You can see how I did it in my guest post at The CSI Project today!  I made my first casting of the mold with resin and the skulls turned out awesome.  Since the silicone is heat resistant to pretty high temps, I also plan to use it with polymer clay! [how to make your own silicone molds]

Project estimate:

  • Sugru, about $3*
  • Skull ring, on hand or $1
  • Cooking spray, on hand
  • Wax paper or freezer paper, on hand

Total: about $3 and up

*You can order Sugru directly off of their website. You can get a package of a dozen packets in various colors for $18 plus shipping; this project uses 2 packets, or about $3 worth.

They’re making a comeback as Perler beads; when I was growing up in the 80s they were “those beady things that you melt with the iron.”  I’ve even seen kits with them at the dollar store lately.  But the ones seen here are none of the above.  Feeling experimental, PC from Meijo’s Joy made these out of something most people would throw away: recycled drinking straws!  The process still needs some refining, but definitely has awesome possibilities!  [how to make DIY Perler beads]
