gold leaf mirror

I always pick up at least one bag of these fabric leaves at Dollar Tree each year.  They’re such a pretty, inexpensive product to craft and decorate with.  Last year I let my kids scatter them on the table for decor, and we used some as tail feathers for our paper turkeys.  This year, I decided to give them a metallic finish to create a more luxe look.

Project estimate:

  • Fabric leaves, $1
  • Gold paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Dimensional Magic, on hand or about $3
  • Mirror, $1
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

step 1
Step one:  Paint both sides of the leaves gold.

step 2

Step two:  Drop a small amount of Dimensional Magic on the leaf, and use a brush to paint the front of the leaf with the DM.  This makes the leaves a little stiffer and gives them a beautiful sheen.

last step

Step three:  Arrange the leaves as desired around the mirror, and glue them in place.

It makes a gorgeous mirror, but if you don’t want to hang it up, you could set it on a table to create a pretty centerpiece.  I think it would look beautiful paired with the cracked glass votive that I showed you how to make recently.

faux gold leaf

I liked the leaves so much that I painted a few more to make myself a pair of earrings.  Pretty, don’t you think?  I can think of so many ways to use these pretty gold leaves:  place settings, napkin rings,  or to embellish cards.  Have fun crafting and creating!

10 DIY Thanksgiving Place Settings

A sweet little place setting can add so much personality to your Thanksgiving table, and place settings can even double as activities for your dinner guests. Some thoughtful homemade place settings and just the right DIY centerpiece can really make Thanksgiving supper feel a lot more special.

1. Pilgrim Napkin Rings – These simple napkin rings are simple enough to make with kids but don’t look like a kid craft when they’re done.

2. Thankful Placemats – My favorite part of Thanksgiving is going around the table saying what we are all thankful for. Save those lovely sentiments by incorporating them into your Thanksgiving table!

3. Gratitude Place Cards – These wine cork place cards are another “what I’m thankful for” place setting idea. Each person can write their thoughts on the back. No forgetting who wrote what!

4. Silver Platter Chalkboards – OK, I know that these say Merry Christmas, but the beauty of these is that you can personalize the message for the Thanksgiving table or any other special event! Hit the thrift for an eclectic mix of platters, and you can set one at each place.

5. Scrabble Place Cards – This is another fun chalkboard place setting idea that’s easy to customize.

6. Candlestick Places – Are there some family members who you wish could be at the table? This is such a sweet, clever way to include loved ones that you’re missing.

7. Book Page Feathers – Tuck a personalized paper feather into your napkin rings at each place at your Thanksgiving table.

8. Pumpkin Place Settings – Are you sad that Halloween is over, because now you have no excuse to buy tiny pumpkins? Be glum no more! You need them for your Thanksgiving table.

9. Grocery Bag Napkin Rings – I love the layered look of these simple, recycled napkin rings that double as place cards.

10. Minimalist Thanskgiving Table Setting – Tuck your silverware into these little envelopes and invite your guests to write down what they’re thankful for.

Now that fall is here, I’ve started making lots of acorn crafts.  For this idea, I needed something larger than the acorns I had collected.  I dug through my craft stash and found foam eggs I had purchased at Dollar Tree last Easter.  By combining the foam eggs with twine, also from Dollar Tree, I was able to make “acorns” that were just the right size for my project!  If you’re not a craft supply hoarder like me, you should be able to find oval foam and paper mache eggs at your local craft store.

Project estimate:

  • Foam eggs, $1
  • Twine, on hand or $1
  • Chalkboard paint, on hand or about $3 and up
  • Glue gun, on hand
Total:  $1 and up
supplies
Step one:  Paint the foam eggs with chalkboard paint.  I just needed two applications for full coverage.
step 1
Step two:  Glue twine to the larger end of the egg, and begin wrapping.  I like mine with a more haphazard, messy look, but you could make a neat coil if you prefer.
step 2
Step three:  Glue a small loop of twine to the end of the “acorn”.
acorn place card
Prepare the surface by gently rubbing a piece of chalk on it and wiping it off.  Now your “acorn” is ready to be embellished with a name, monogram, or anything else you feel like drawing!  I used some additional twine so I could attach the place card to a napkin.

A fun twist for Thanksgiving could be to ask each person at the table to write one thing they are thankful for on the acorn, and place it in a bowl.  Then you’ll have a pretty, personalized centerpiece that will remind everyone of all the wonderful things you have in your life!

Yes, you can make this beautiful silk Thanksgiving centerpiece and use it for years to come!

Today’s tutorial comes to us from Terrie, our forum moderator at the Dollar Store Crafts Facebook group where we invite our readers to share what crafty things they’ve been up to.  If you love dollar store crafting, be sure to join the group to see lots more great ideas like this!

Project estimate:

  • Cardboard, on hand
  • Assorted gourds and pumpkin, about $2
  • Fall leaf garland, $1
  • Faux berries, $1
  • Pine cones, free
  • Piece of felt, on hand or about $0.25
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total:  about $4 and up!

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

I used an oatmeal box which wasn’t very sturdy so I used the front and back and glued them together.

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Glue the felt on the cardboard so that it covers one side of the cardboard completely. Notice I folded it over about an inch and cut the corners at an angel so they weren’t so bulky.

Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Cut some leaves off the garland and randomly glue them on the edges of the cardboard. When you cut the leaves, do so to where they don’t have stems. I used the leaves off two different garlands for a better assortment.

Place the largest pumpkins and/or gourds in the center of the cardboard so that they are touching one another. DO NOT use glue yet. Once you have them in the position you like, making sure your centerpiece is pretty on all sides, you can glue them in to place. Pick each one up, add hot glue to the bottom and put it back in place.

Collect all smaller items along with some extra leaves and place them evenly around the centerpiece. Once you are satisfied with their placement, glue them one by one until you are done, just like before. Note: be sure to cover all the felt.

You’re finished! Your entire centerpiece is ready for the dining table, coffee table, wherever you need a touch of autumn.  You can make these in different sizes and shapes, this one is round because our cardboard was a square. If you want an oval centerpiece, make your cardboard rectangular.

To store, because it is literally one piece, you can slip it into a clear plastic bag or box and place it on a shelf for next year and years to come.

Designer Tips:

  • Although pizza boxes are ideal to use, do NOT use one that has been used. The pizza aroma will linger in the cardboard for a very long time.
  • Before you use pine cones “from the wild” bake them for one hour in the oven at 175F. This assures that they will be insect free.

DIY Leaf Bowl

I have a ton of faux leaves in fall colors hiding in my stash, and yet every year I find myself buying more of them.  Have you ever found yourself wondering what to do with a pile of fake foliage?  Colleen at Vivint’s The Neighborhood used some to create a pretty leaf bowl.  It would look great as part of your Thanksgiving tablescape, or anywhere else you want to add a pop of fall color.  You could even try adding a coat of spray paint over the finished bowl to give it an entirely different look – I think it would look amazing in gold!  [how to make a faux leaf bowl]

Decoupaged Thanksgiving Silverware Holder

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it brings together my entire (and very large) family for some quality time.  And while the traditional Thanksgiving dinner scene shows a family all sitting around one table, our family is so large that not only do we not all fit at one table, we also don’t fit in one room!  For this reason our holiday meals are served buffet-style.  This also means that we don’t have fancy place settings – but that doesn’t mean we can’t still make everything pretty!  Over at Mom Endeavors I shared my contribution to this year’s festivities, a cute little bucket to hold all of the rolled silverware.  It’ll look so festive sitting next to the plates at the beginning of the spread!  [how to make a decoupaged Thanksgiving silverware holder]

Project estimate:

  • Metal bucket, $1
  • Silk leaves, $1
  • Letter stickers, on hand or $1 and up
  • Mod Podge, on hand
  • Silverware, on hand or $1
  • Napkins, on hand or $1
