Skeleton Hands Halloween Wreath

Give spooky a sophisticated twist with this skeleton hand wreath!  Vanessa from Tried & True gave the plastic hands a visual upgrade with the help of some metallic sliver spray paint.  It’s amazing what a big difference you can make with a little paint!  We also love that the center of her wreath is a chalkboard, allowing you to customize and change the sentiment on a whim.  [how to make a skeleton hand Halloween wreath]

  • Spray paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Chalkboard circle (or wood circle + chalkboard paint), $1 and up

DIY Skeleton Accessories
I’ve been having fun crafting with these mini skeleton hands!  They are the perfect size for making quick Halloween accesories.  I purchased a pack at Michaels so I could make a set of hair clips, and started thinking of other ways to use them.  I came up with a scarf pin and a really fun fascinator!  Here’s how you can make your own.
Skeleton Crafts

Project estimate:

  • Skeleton hands, $2 per pack
  • Fabric headband, on hand
  • Tulle, on hand or $1
  • Flowers, $1
  • Pin Backs, on hand
Total:  $3 and up
scarf pin
To make the scarf pin:
Use E-6000 to glue the pin to the inside of the hand.  I added pink nail polish for a bit of color, and paired the pin with this scarf from Dollar Tree.
To make the fascinator:
step 1step 2
1.  Cut a strip of tulle, scrunch it and fold it in half.  Sew it onto the headband.  Do this twice.
color flowersstep 3
2.  Tint white fabric flowers with black ink.  Sew them onto the headband.
step 4
3.  Hot glue the hand on top of the flowers.
DIy Fascinator
4.  Cover the hand and flowers with a piece of tulle, and sew the tulle to the headband.
The hair clip tutorial can be found here.
DIy Scarf Pin
I can think of lots of other fun ways to use these boney hands.  They’d make creepy belt buckles, spooky key chains, and haunting pendants.  If only there were more hours in a day to craft all the things!  What would you make with skeleton hands?

DIY Skull Lantern

My Halloween decor tends to center largely around skeletons and skulls – I even have a couple of skull themed pieces that stay out year-round as part of my regular decor.  (What can I say?  I have very eclectic taste!)  So it’s no surprise that I am totally in love with this bony candle lantern by Susan at Oh My! Creative.  Inspired by a similar piece from Pottery Barn, this lantern has a ton of spooky character.  I think one of these would look excellent on my bookshelf!  How about you – do you prefer spooky decor or cute decor for Halloween?  Tell us in the comments!  [how to make a glowing skulls lantern]

Halloween Weathervane

If you’ve ever broken one of your favorite things, but held onto the remains in case you thought of something crafty to do with it, you might be a craft hoarder.  Such is the story of this project by self-admitted packrat Vivienne from The V Spot, who tucked away a broken weathervane for future use.  Her decision to turn it into Halloween decor is fabulous, and her incorporation of a dollar store pumpkin and skeleton definitely doesn’t read as cheap.  Budget-friendly, elegant holiday decor that keeps a broken item out of the landfill?  It’s a double win!  [how to make a Halloween weathervane]

Project estimate:

  • Weathervane, on hand or about $5 and up
  • Foam pumpkin, $1
  • Plastic skeleton, $1
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glitter, on hand or $1 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Floral pins, on hand or $1

Total:  $2 and up

Make a Jailbird Skeleton Halloween Decoration

Have you started working on Halloween crafts yet? With all of the holiday decor and other items finding their way onto the shelves, my mind had been reeling with so many ideas! When I came across some little wire bird cages on a recent visit to Michaels, I was struck with the idea to turn it into an old-fashioned jail cell for a little plastic skeleton. I even already had the skeleton on hand from a garland I grabbed at Dollar Tree last year! Over at Mrs. Greene you can find a tutorial to make your own version of this project. I am so happy with how it turned out that I think I might make a couple more so I can hang a whole set of skeletal inmates in my front window to greet guests, since I still have several more little skeletons left in the garland! [how to make a jailbird skeleton Halloween decoration]

Project estimate:

  • Mini bird cage, $2
  • Plastic skeleton garland, $1
  • Spray paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand

Total: $3 and up

There are so many different ways to decorate for Halloween.  Some people prefer orange and black while others like a more non-traditional combination of purple and green.  Some people like cute decorations, while others want their house to look like the set of a horror movie.  Personally, I am a skeletons-for-Halloween kind of girl; most of my decorations incorporate a boney theme.  If you are a fellow skeleton lover, you will love this idea!  Taryn from Formal Fringe whipped up these spooky skeleton hands using gloves and a Sharpie, creating easy creep factor for her holiday decor.   I think I might make a set of these to line the window sill in my front room to creep out trick-or-treaters!  [how to make spooky skeleton hands]

Project estimate:

  • Latex gloves, $1
  • Sharpie, on hand
  • Glass jars, on hand
  • Batter-operated tea lights, on hand or $1

Skeleton Halloween Wreath

Of all the things you can do with the plastic skeletons from Dollar Tree, it seems that my favorites are the ones that involve tearing them apart and reassembling them in a different configuration.  Over at SouthernScraps Happenings, we spied this spooky wreath that was assembled using a handful of the larger skeletons.  You could also make a smaller version using the garland-style skeletons, or tear apart a few more piles of bones to decorate any number of additional items to add to your Halloween decor!  [how to make skeleton Halloween wreath]

Project estimate:

  • Wreath form, $1
  • Skeletons, about $5
  • Glue, on hand
  • Spray paint, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  about $6 and up

Make Skeleton Costume Contest Trophies

While part of me wants to claim that candy is my favorite part of Halloween (I am totally addicted to those Russell Stover chocolate pumpkins filled with various delicious substances), there is actually one thing that I love about Halloween even more: dressing up!  Halloween costumes are serious business among my circle of friends, with some of them being planned and worked on nearly a year in advance.  And of course, people who are that serious about their costumes are also serious about costume contests!  If you’re hosing a Halloween party with a costume contest this year, here is an idea from Mizerella at 102 Wicked Things To Do.  She turned dollar store skeletons into a whole set of adorable trophies!  I love how she re-articulated the skeletons to pose them appropriately for each different award.  Move over Oscars and Emmys, the Skellies have arrived!  [how to make skeleton costume contest trophies]

Project estimate:

  • Skeletons, $1
  • Wooden plaques, $1
  • Glue, on hand
  • Spray paint, on hand
  • Embellishments, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $2 and up

Have you started decorating for Halloween yet?  It’s one of my favorite holidays, and I pull out all of the stops – I decorate more for Halloween than I do for Christmas!  I enjoy the creepy, macabre aesthetic of many Halloween decorations, filling my home with a collection of strange curiosities.  This altered book art by Marilyn at Seeing Things That Aren’t Really There would fit right in with the rest of my spooky decor!  Giving new life to a ratty, falling-apart book, she used inexpensive embellishments to turn it into a creepy relic that would look fabulous as part of a mantle display or centerpiece arrangement.  [how to make easy Halloween altered book art]

Project estimate:

  • Old book, on hand or $1
  • Picture frame, $1 and up
  • Skeleton hands, $1 and up
  • Cardboard, on hand
  • Printable graphics, free
  • Paint, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand
