Growing up with a mother who was a preschool teacher, I became accustomed to reading time involving props like felt board shapes or  puppets.   I was reminded of this when I saw these turkey finger puppet gloves by Lorie from Reading  Confetti.  She made them to go with the book “10 Fat Turkeys” by Tony Johnston, but they would also be fun just for play!  I mean, what kid doesn’t love finger puppets?  [how to make turkey finger puppet gloves]

  • Craft foam or felt,  on hand or $1

You’ve heard of sock monkeys…  But how about glove squirrels?  No?  Esther from Handmade with Love needed a little plush zombie critter this Halloween, but didn’t want to zombify any of her existing stuffed animals.  Instead, she used inexpensive gloves to make a couple of cute little squirrels (one squirrel per glove), which she then made creepy and gruesome.   Cute and twisted…  Now that’s my kind of craft!  If you’re not into zombies, you can leave out the blood-and-terror element and embellish them to your own liking.  [how to make a glove into a zombie squirrel]

Project estimate:

  • Gloves, on hand or $1
  • Sewing notions, on hand
  • Polyfill, on hand or about $3 and up

Admittedly, just about any Halloween costume that you put on a baby is automatically adorable.  My favorite category of baby costumes is animals, which I also think are some of the cutest!  Kathryn from The Dragon’s Fairy Tail made a moose costume for her then-6-month-old son last year that was cheap, easy, warm, and of course awww-inducing.  (Isn’t her little guy just the sweetest?)  Hand the kid a stuffed squirrel toy and it becomes a Rocky and Bullwinkle ensemble!  [how to make a moose Halloween costume]

Project estimate:

  • Brown hooded sweatshirt, $1 and up
  • Tan stretch gloves, $1
  • Sewing notions, on hand
  • Pollyfill, on hand or about $3

Total:  $2 and up

Even when you’re doing dishes, you want to look glamorous, right? Inspired by a tutorial by Little Birdie Secrets, I made some ruffly rubber gloves from stuff I bought at the dollar store. I first learned of this tutorial from the best of DIY and it cracked me up, so I knew I had to try it. A kitchen-themed swap on Craftster presented the perfect opportunity!

I found yellow gloves and black rubber gloves at the dollar store. I knew I wanted to use the hot pink gingham I already had on hand, so I went with the black gloves. I made a matching pouch to put them in just for fun.

Project Materials:

  • Rubber gloves, $1
  • Ribbon, $1 or on hand
  • Fabric, on hand (the original tutorial uses oilcloth, which I didn’t have)

Total cost: $1 and up
