Every time I wander through the craft store, I always ponder uses for all of the pre-cut wooden shapes.  Here’s one that I never thought of:  Jamie from C.R.A.F.T. (Creating Really Awesome Free Things), inspired by her brother’s love of Rubik’s cubes, made him a wooden cube puzzle as a gift.  It’s such a fun idea, and it’s great for puzzle lovers of all ages!  Made by carefully arranging and gluing 27 little wooden cubes, it’s a challenge that will really get your brain moving.  Jamie’s wooden cubes came in packages of 72, so you can make a couple of puzzle cubes out of the supplies you’ll need to gather up.  [how to make a wooden cube puzzle]

Project estimate:

  • Wooden cubes, about $3
  • Glue, on hand
  • Cotton swabs, on hand
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  about $3 and up

What could be more traditional than a ghost costume? Sure, it might be traditional, but it doesn’t have to be boring — especially when it’s a costume made from dollar store stuff. Mandy from Sugar Bee Crafts agreed to come show us how to make a pillowcase-style dress ghost costume that is cute enough to wear all through the month leading up to Halloween.
You can find all the supplies for this costume at the dollar store, or maybe you have what you need on hand already. If you don’t like to sew, this dress can be constructed with a hot glue gun. Just glue where the instructions say to sew!

Ghost Pillowcase Dress Costume

Project Materials:
  • Halloween Garland (loved the shimmer of purple), $1
  • a pack of black dishcloths, $1
  • 2 flour sack things – they’re by the kitchen towels, and there’s essentially a big square of white fabric, $2
  • Sewing machine & thread, on hand
  • Hot glue & glue sticks, on hand

Total: $4

How to Make It:

1. Cut the flour sacks to the size you want, lay them on top of each other with right sides together, and sew up the side seams.

2. Cut the half-a-“u” shape for the armholes as shown. Turn the edge and sew it down.

3. Cut the garland into 2 pieces – one that will go all the way around the bottom of the dress for trim and one to use as a shoulder tie. Also cut eyes and a mouth from the black dishcloth.

4. Then iron and sew down on the top of the front and back about 1 inch.  This will make a casing that the garland can pass through to tie the dress around the shoulders.

To attach the face pieces and garland trim around the bottom, I just used hot glue.  Then feed the other garland piece through the casing – try on the dress and tie it in place over one shoulder.  Voila!

I love this costume because it can also be everyday wear during the Halloween season.  My daughter wears it with a tank top and leggings underneath.

p.s. Last year I made an updated version of this classic halloween costume, too. Check out my tutorial: a ghost, but pillowcase style.

Here’s a graphic 3D art project to make just in time for Valentine’s Day. Meg at Brassy Apple is a dollar store craftin’ genius, and she found a great way to use those cool valentine floral picks from the dollar store. Need a little giftie to give friends or neighbors for V-day? I have found that valentines are one really good way to make connections with people. Give a co-worker a valentine, and you’ll be on their good list for the year. These are the perfect grown-up answer to the little valentine cards from grade school. [how to make 3D Valentine Art]

You can find the picks in the seasonal section at Dollar Tree, but you can also usually find them near the wedding section year-round (at least, you can at my DT).

Project Estimate:

  • 5×7 Frame (remove glass), $1
  • Scrapbook paper, on hand
  • 2 heart picks (package comes w/8), $.20
  • Supplies: knife, pencil, scissors, glue, on hand

Total: $1.20
