Make Glitter Spider Pins

You know that around here we love our silicone ice cube tray crafts. So when I spotted a new one with spiders and spiderwebs on the shelf at Dollar Tree in this year’s Halloween selections, I got a little giddy – especially when I had the idea to pour the spiders with two contrasting colors of glittery resin! I’ve used these kind of ice cube trays to make resin jewelry before but this is the first time I’ve tried using multiple colors, and I am really happy with how they turned out. Watch the how-to video below!

Project estimate:

  • Spider ice cube tray, $1
  • Resin kit, about $5 and up
  • Glitter, on hand or $1 and up
  • Pin backs, on hand or $1

Total: about $6 and up

Stencils are a great tool for crafting on limited time and budget; you buy them once and can use them over and over, and they make it a cinch to create fabulous-looking projects.  Projects like these doily spiderweb candles by Shannon at Madigan Made!  They look like something you might find at a high-end design store;  simple glass prayer candles have never been so wow-worthy.  Another great thing about stenciled projects is that the design is easy to replicate, so if you enjoy this look you can also give the same treatment to other items and make a fun, matching set of sophisticated-yet-wicked Halloween decor!  [how to make doily spiderweb candles]

Project estimate:

  • Prayer candles, $1 and up
  • Stencils, about $12 and up
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  about $13 and up

Dollar Store T-shirt Wreath

Wreaths are a crafter’s favorite project: every one is unique, they can have so many different looks, and they are often quick and easy, which is perfect if you’re an impatient crafter. One of my best friends, Jen from Tatertots and Jello is a master of making the most adorable crafts. She can turn an old t-shirt into… a really cool sparkly Halloween wreath! Well, in this case, the t-shirt wasn’t old — it was a 3xl shirt she found at Dollar Tree. She also bought all the other materials for this project at the dollar store, spending a grand total of $4. [how to make a t-shirt wreath]

Project Estimate:

  • Wreath form, $1
  • Black t-shirt, $1
  • Spider web decoration, $1
  • Spider, $1
  • Silver paint, on hand
  • Glitter, on hand

Total: $4

As part of a challenge to create Halloween crafts for free, Delia from Delia Creates went on a twig-collecting mission.  After rounding up a few supplies she had tucked away in her stash, she came up with a simple, spooky wreath design.  The bright orange spider ring is a perfect touch!   (I think I also have some purple spider rings left over from last year laying around somewhere.  Hmmm…  That makes me want to go twig hunting myself!)  [how to make a Halloween twig wreath]

It’s Day 2 of Homemade Costume Week at Dollar Store Crafts! This week, I’m bringing you several costume ideas that are simple, no-sew, and frugal, of course! Today’s featured costume is the no-sew Spider costume. I used dollar store socks to create the spider’s spooky extra legs. I couldn’t find a stocking cap at the dollar store when I was working on the costume (high summer), so I used a long sleeve from an old shirt and tied it at the top to create the eight-eyed hat. [get instructions for making the Spider costume at my Kaboose post]

costume sketch - spider

This costume turned out just like the sketch too, but I had to omit the gloves because I couldn’t find them in stores in August. I think it would be fun to use white gloves and a bow-tie to make a formal spider. Or, wear a black and red tutu, add a red hourglass on the shirt, and a fancy cocktail hat for a Black Widow costume.

Project Estimate:

  • Black long-sleeved shirt, on hand
  • Black stocking cap, $1 or on hand
  • Black duct tape, about $3.50 per roll
  • 2 pairs black socks (4 socks total), $2
  • Black yarn, on hand
  • 8 large wiggle eyes, $1
  • Plastic grocery bags (about 16), on hand

Total: $7.50

Everyone loves quick and easy ideas! Here are some great Halloween crafts from Better Homes & Gardens that can be done with dollar store materials. First up is this awesome spooky silhouette project. You don’t have to be artistic, because BHG even has the spooky templates available for download – just cut them out of black cardstock. Buy a dollar store frame and paint it black. Pick up a mat for a couple bucks, or make your own out of card stock. [how to make a spooky silhouette]

Project Estimate:

  • Frame, $1
  • Card stock, $1

Total: $2

Spooky Witch Hat Flower Arrangement: $5

The dollar store has a whole aisle of faux flowers, and I am floral department impaired, so I never make anything with faux flowers (anyone out there want to volunteer to do a guest post for me featuring faux flowers?). BHG made this stylish and sassy halloween flower arrangement that looks like a witch hat. You can make this with stuff from the dollar store, too! I think this would be a fun arrangement to have on your desk at work. [how to make a witch hat flower arrangement]

Project Estimate:

  • Floral cone, $1
  • Black and purple faux flowers, $4 and up
  • Card stock, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand

Total: $5 and up

Evil Googly Eye Pom-Pom Wreath: $6

This wreath made me laugh. It’s half-Martha half-Muppet! Make a googly eye wreath with stuff from the dollar store – a wreath form, pom-poms (although these look like moss to me – you could use those moss-covered rocks they sell at the dollar store), googly eyes and a pretty ribbon. Everyone likes making wreaths! [how to make a googly eye pom-pom wreath]

Project Estimate:

  • Wreath form, $1
  • Pom-poms, $3 and up
  • Googly eyes, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1

Total: $6

Long-Legged Spider

This project is cute, fun, and simple. My kids would be very entertained by this. Ooh, I bet it would be cute to make a mini version of this guy. [how to make a long legged spider]

Project Estimate:

  • Foam balls, $1
  • Wire, $1 or on hand
  • Black craft paint, on hand
  • Glue gun, on hand
  • Wire cutters, on hand
  • Googly eyes, on hand

Total: $1 and up

Ghostly Image Mirror: $1

This craft is kind of mind-bending, but awesome. They show you how to transform a mirror to reflect a ghostly image – so creepy! This is a definite dollar store craft candidate, because you will want to use a mirror that you don’t love for this project (you have to permanently alter the mirror). [how to make a ghostly image mirror]

Project Estimate:

  • Mirror, on hand or $1
  • Sandpaper, on hand or $1
  • 2 printed pages, on hand

Total: Free and up

Halloween Glasses: $1

These glasses are decorated with hand-painted skellies. You could easily do this with dollar store glassware, and BHG makes it easy by providing skeleton templates that you can easily copy. [how to make halloween glasses]

Project Estimate:

  • Glassware, $1
  • Craft paint, on hand

Total: $1 each

Creepy Plate Display: $1

These creepy dishes make a great display, and are made with free clip art and our friend Amy‘s favorite technique: decoupage. [how to make creepy plates]

Project Estimate:

  • Plates and serving ware, $1
  • Printed creepy pictures, on hand
  • Mod Podge, on hand

Total: $1

I probably could have featured almost every halloween craft from Better Homes & Gardens on my site. Their readers must like the same things as my readers: simple, quick, and attractive crafts. These were a few of my faves. Which ones did you like? Will you make any of these?

doily spiderweb

I love how sweet and whimsical this crocheted doily spiderweb is. And I love the wee crocheted spider! It’s true, get ready to start seeing Halloween posts all over the wide wide world of web! (Oops, pun not intended!) Jen at Lipstick and Laundry made a couple of these sweeties. These might be my favorite Halloween crafts ever. [see the original doily spiderweb here]

If you don’t crochet, pick up some dollar store doilies, a couple embroidery hoops at the craft store, and use felt to cut out a bitty spider. If you crochet, it’s still a lot quicker to use the dollar store doily, and crochet a few rows in a spiral with black embroidery floss and a teeny crochet hook. Check my teeny Chewbacca zipper pull project for tips on crocheting with embroidery floss.

Project Estimate:

  • Embroidery hoop, $1
  • Crocheted doily, $1 (or 2 for $1)
  • Felt or embroidery floss, $.25, or on hand

Total: $2.00 and up

Halloween Village by Claudine Hellmuth: $1

I loved the Holiday Village Claudine made last year, and she’s updated the idea for Halloween. Love the gothic touch of using sheet music as the base for the houses. Cute!

Halloween Topiary Makeover by Let It Shine: $4 and up

This is a brilliant makeover of a thrift store topiary tree by Alyshia at Let It Shine. She spray painted the tree, the greenery that was included with it, and added dollar store spiders and webs (also spray painted). Completely smart redo! Wonder what she’ll do with it for Christmas?? Click the link above for more photos and details.

Alyshia also did this quick makeover of styrofoam pumpkins inspired by Martha Stewart using silver spray paint. Cute!

Pumpkin Candleabra by Buildeth Her House: $.50

Valencia used this cute trick to decorate her existing candle holders: stick a styrofoam pumpkin on them. Love it! She has a lot of other great, thrifty decor ideas at her blog.
