pork and beans
This isn’t a dog, but I literally laughed out loud when I saw it. The costume is “Pork and Beans.” That therapy pig sure does put up with a lot! [photo by tlcpiggy via Martha Stewart]
Kona Halloween
Last year, I went as candy corn, and our rottweiler, Kona, went as a candy corn princess. Everything she’s wearing was from the Dollar Tree, or was something I printed out!

But at our house, we don’t just dress her up on Halloween. Any day is an excuse to dress her up. Here are a few of her best shots!

Handmade Children’s Star Wars Costumes

Darth Vader Princess Costume by mayamagination on Craftster

By far the world’s cutest Darth Vader costume! This made me laugh out loud (joyfully) when I saw it. Love, love, love.

I was inspired by other images I had seen on the net of Darth Vader girl costumes, and thought what a perfect costume for my little girl! A combo of her favourite things! Pink, tutus, tiaras, and Star Wars!

Clone Armor and Yoda’s Little Sister (from here)

The author said: My kids both love Star Wars! I made Tristan his clone armor and Josie bacame Yoda’s little sister.

Sidenote: I love that she’s Yoda’s Little Sister, and also, I have a Yoda hat tutorial (not the same as in this photo, by the way)

Jawa Star Wars Costume (from here)

This is a great budget costume, and even uses some things you can get at the dollar store (battery operated tealights, gloves), and it was no-sew!

The creator says: Attached is a photo of my son as a Jawa from Star Wars. This is a homemade costume that my wife and I made for a whopping $7.60. It consists of burlap, a sheer black material, battery operated tea light candles (for eyes) and black gloves. Everything else we had including the belts, holster, pouches, and black sock (to cover arms). The whole costume was put together with a glue gun.

X-wing fighter pilot Luke costume (from here)

I like that this costume is less common than some of the other Luke iterations. Plus, you could go as Wedge Antilles if you wanted.

Yoda Kid Costume (from here)

High quality craftsmanship this has.  Impressive the Yoda hat is

The creator said: My son loves Star Wars, and LOVES Yoda, and I didn’t like the store bought ones, so I made my own!

Princess Leia Toddler Costume (from here)

Princess Leia has never looked so sweet!

The creator said: We did a Star Wars themed Halloween this year, and our Princess made a perfect Leia. Yarn buns were perfect since she didn’t have enough of her own hair.

Darth Vader Homemade Costume at JGoode

Artist Jen Goode handmade her son’s Darth Vader costume, including the mask, which she made with papier-mache and cereal boxes.

Speaking of handmade Star Wars headgear, Lindsey from Filth Wizardry made this incredible stormtrooper mask from recycled milk jugs!

Pixar movies are the best (everyone knows that, right?), and are are on pretty heavy rotation at our house. Handmade Pixar Movie Costumes

Russell and Kevin the Bird from UP Costumes (from here)

Such a cute costume for a pair of kiddos! I wonder if their parent dressed like Mr. Fredrickson? The Russell costume looks a combination of on hand (possibly thrifted), with a handmade sash with badges on it, and handmade handkerchief and modified hat, oh, and balloons, of course. The Kevin the Bird costume appears to be a modified royal blue hoodie (a slit cut in the hood, a felt-covered cone for the neck, not sure on the head), and felt feathers.

Russell from UP Costume (from here)

Here’s another take on the Russell costume. Such a cute boy!

Slinky Dog Costume (2 person) – from here

The owner of the costume said: My mom made this Slinky Dog costume for my boys, age 6. She spent a month on it but it turned out great!

I can identify a few parts of the costume: looks like felt yardage was used for most of the body, brown leggings (or tights) with fuzzy brown slippers (or faux fur-covered slippers). Looks like the slinky is really some wire (probably straight off of one of those giant spools). I wonder how comfortable this was to wear? Probably doesn’t matter, because it’s good enough to go straight to Disneyland and start signing autographs.

Wall-E Costume (from here)

The creator of the costume said:

My three year old son wanted to be Wall-E for Halloween so I decided that I could make it. I started with a cardboard box and made cutouts for the head and arms. For the wheels, I pulled apart one side of the another piece of cardboard to use the corrugated part as the texture of the wheels, then shaped them and used hot glue to attached the sides together. For the arms I used Pringles chips tubes covered with brown bags and duct tape for the hands. The eyes were shaped out of cardboard and glued together with hot glue then I taped the eyes to kid’s safety goggles. I used images of Wall-E onine and used those as reference to paint the entire costume in tempera paint. He absolutely loves it!

Boo from Monsters, Inc. Costume (from here)

Aaaah! Boo is the cutest part of Monsters, Inc. and this is such an adorable costume. Looks like it was basically a slightly conical padded tube made out of felt or cotton (with teeth added, of course!). The head kind of looks like a completely covered umbrella to me!

Buzz Lightyear Costume (from here)

Buzz says: This mini Buzz Lightyear was made entirely from scratch. My Dad made all the armor pieces and my Mom made all the soft parts, logos and iron-ons. It took two weeks to build and my favorite part was being able to wear it to Disneyland.

Looks like a combination of readymade items (white pants and shirt), sewn items (hood and rolly belt thing), craft foam (armor and arm gauntlets) and recycled stuff embellishments (plastic cap knob, etc.). Oh, and dig the modded shoes! Looks like duct tape on the shoes?

One of my favorite pastimes is coming up with funny costumes to dress my baby in come Halloween. Wednesday Addams Costume (from here)

The creator of the costume said: We decided that, as a family, we would dress up as the Addams Family and, of course, our little daughter would have to be Wednesday. So I decided to make her a dress as close to Wednesday’s as I could. Her hair is still short so I had to add braids.

I have to admit, the chubby cheeks make the costume for me! And the phony ponies.

If I were going to recreate the costume, I’d modify an existing dress (as plain as possible) by dying or painting it black, adding white buttons, collar, and cuffs. Add black tights and shoes, and braids, if necessary.

Big Bird Baby Costume (from here)

From the creator: Before J. was born his nickname was Big Bird. So it only seemed fitting to make him be Big Bird for Halloween! This costume was done from scratch, with no patterns, by his Mommy. =)

Sumo Baby Costume (from here)

The trick to this costume would be keeping the wig on the baby.

Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz Baby Costume (from here)

The face on the scarecrow is what makes me love this costume. I think it’s because my youngest son is the same age. The rest of the costume is adorable, too, though!

Candygram Land Shark Costume (from here)

Okay, I don’t think this is meant to be the Candygram land shark, but that’s what it reminds me of. Look s like this shark costume was made out of felt yardage in several costume pieces (shark head, torso, arm fins, leg fins).

Cute Little Pumpkin Costume

Dollar Store Crafts reader Deidre C. made this pumpkin costume for her cute little punkin! Ingredients: lots and lots of tulle!

Captain Picard Baby Costume:

Craftster user VeggieJess made her 8 week son a Captain Picard costume. (I also linked this one in the Geeky Costumes Roundup, but I love this cute baby picture!)

Lobster Toddler Costume by djinn_3wishes on Craftster:

she says: totally DIY including making the pattern

Looks like it was made out of polar fleece in several pieces. A hat, lobster claws, bodysuit.

I thought this nice aerial photo of the costume laid out would help if anyone wanted to make their own. More pics here

Hulk Hogan Kid Costume (from here)

This costume just made me laugh. Perhaps it’s the Hulk Hogan trademark handlebar mustache on a toddler. So cute.
