Shark Flip Flop Sculpture Wall Art - DollarStoreCrafts.com

This Shark Flip Flop Sculpture Wall Art project was a happy accident that I came up with when I was making my Shark Bitten Flip-Flop Wreath. As I trimmed the shark bites, I noticed that when turned on its side, a flip-flop kind of resembles a shark. I had one flip-flop left over from my wreath project, so I tried, and my shark sculpture idea worked! This craft is easy and cheap, and makes a surprisingly cute nautical decoration for your pool, bathroom, or kids’ room.

Project Materials:

  • One flip-flop, $.50
  • Scissors, hot glue, and a marker
  • A piece of twine or ribbon for hanging, on hand

Total cost: $.50

1. Draw a shark shape on your flip flop with a marker. I started by making a sharp C shape for the tail, then working my way around the flip flop. If you aren’t confident in your drawing skills, trace the flip flop onto a piece of paper and make a template that way, then trace it onto the shoe. Don’t worry about drawing the fin — we’ll add that next.

2. Cut along traced lines to create the shark shape. Be sure to cut away any telltale marker lines!

3. Look through your trimmed pieces for a good shark fin piece. Trim if necessary. I found one that worked perfectly.

4. Hot glue fin onto sculpture. Add a lower fin and any other details, if desired.

5. Draw an eye on with a permanent marker.

6. Add a loop of twine or ribbon to the back of the sculpture for hanging.

Crafty Shark Week, everybody! Make a cute poolside sign that says “Beware: Shark Infested Waters” and is made out of dollar store flip-flops that look like they’ve survived a shark attack! This wreath would be cute for a kids’ bathroom or nautical-themed bedroom too.

crafty shark week at DollarStoreCrafts.com

I was inspired to make this shark-bitten flip-flop wreath by a Shark Party Idea post I saw on Chickabug (who found it on Pinterest, and nobody can find the original source).  My version is quite a bit different, but here’s the very cute inspiration wreath (which looks like it was made with dollar store flip-flops, so if you are the person who created this wreath, please speak up and I’d be happy to give you credit!):

Flip Flop Shark-Bitten Wreath

Here’s my version of the shark-bitten wreath, and instructions for making it:

Shark infested waters flip-flop wreath - dollarstorecrafts.com

Project Materials:

  • Floral foam wreath form, $1
  • 2 pairs of flip-flops: $2
  • A piece of glitter craft foam, $.12 (From a pack of 8)
  • A piece of recycled cardboard, on hand
  • Ribbon, on hand
  • Marker and hot glue

Total cost: $3.12

About the supplies: If you want, you can skip the floral foam wreath, as it doesn’t really show. You can mount the flip flops on a piece of cardboard, or it would be cute to use a piece of recycled wood if you are handy like that. I used three flip-flops (so, two pairs), but the middle flip-flop doesn’t even show, so you could get away with just using a single pair of flip-flops too. Save yourself $2 this way!

Beware: Shark Infested Waters Flip-Flop Wreath - DollarStoreCrafts.com

1. Wrap wreath with ribbon or torn fabric, securing with hot glue. (Skip this step if you aren’t using a foam wreath form).

2. With sturdy scissors, cut shark bite marks into flip-flops. Glue flip flops onto wreath (or background piece) with hot glue.

3. Write “Beware: Shark Infested Waters” on a piece of recycled cardboard or white card stock. Glue on glitter craft foam. Glue signs onto flip-flops.

Tip: I cut the straps off of the middle flip-flop to fit the sign easily onto the wreath.

Beware: Shark Infested Waters Flip-Flop Wreath - DollarStoreCrafts.com

4. Be sure to trim any bite marks into the sign as well!

5. Add a loop to the back of the wreath for hanging.

Crafty Shark Week to you! Yesterday I sat down and got dollar store crafty with just a few bucks worth of supplies. This Shark Bite Picture Frame will set you back about ten cents! Maybe less, depending on your stash. It’s easy, quick, and cute. Ready to find out how to make it?

crafty shark week at DollarStoreCrafts.com

Materials Needed:

  • A piece of blue craft foam or card stock, on hand or $.10 (10 sheets per pack at the dollar store)
  • A piece of recycled white cardboard or card stock, on hand
  • A piece of twine or ribbon, on hand
  • Scissors, marker, and hot glue, on hand

Total: FREE and up

I already had all this stuff on hand, so it was a freebie for me. If you don’t have some of these supplies, just get creative and substitute. You can paint a piece of cardboard blue or white if needed!

DIY Shark Frame - made with recyclables. Cute & easy! dollarstorecrafts.com

1. Trace a rounded triangle shape on the blue craft foam sheet. I freehanded it. Draw a smaller rounded triangle inside the larger one.

2. Cut out inside triangle.

3. Trace shape onto white cardboard or card stock. I traced mine onto the printed side of the white cardboard so when I turned it over, the plain white side would be the side that showed on the frame. Add jagged teeth inside the small circle.

DIY Shark Frame - made with recyclables. Cute & easy! dollarstorecrafts.com

4. Cut out the traced shape on the white cardboard. Cut the outside first, then cut inside the small triangle, leaving the teeth for last. It’s easier to cut the teeth out when there’s a bigger hole already and you can just cut each tooth out one by one (instead of trying to zig-zag cut continuously).

DIY Shark Frame - made with recyclables. Cute & easy! dollarstorecrafts.com

5. Glue blue foam to white cardboard background. Draw nostril holes on the shark!

6. Turn the whole thing over and glue a loop onto the back of the frame for hanging. I glued an extra piece of ribbon over the loop just to secure it.

DIY Shark Frame - made with recyclables. Cute & easy! dollarstorecrafts.com

7. Put a photo in the hole (I taped mine with masking tape so I could remove it later if needed).

Hooray, it’s shark week at DSC!  I love to see what fun ideas and projects the team comes up with.  Shark projects can run the spectrum from scary to silly to chic, and the idea I have for you today definitely falls in the “silly” category, with a nod to how scary sharks are.

shark socks DIY

Admit it, haven’t we all worried about critters nibbling on our toes when we wade into the ocean?  These fun DIY socks illustrate what might happen if a shark decided to munch on your foot.  I used super soft fabric paint to keep the socks soft and comfortable.

Project Estimate:

  • Socks – $1
  • So Soft Fabric Paint – $1.50 each
  • Puffy Paint – $1

Total:  $5

step 1

Step one:  Cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the sock.

step 2

Step two:  Use the silver paint to make the “body” of the shark.  Paint a “v” shape near the top and fill in the rest of the sock with silver paint.  Repeat on the other side.

step 3step 4

Step three:  Use the red paint to outline the teeth.  Make small “v” shapes for the teeth.  Fill the top of the sock with the red paint.

Step four:  Use black puffy paint to draw the eyes and other details on the shark.

Confession:  I totally want to make a pair for myself.  Everyone who sees these can’t help but giggle.  All my kids want a pair, and luckily these are super easy to make so I’ll have them all done in no time.  Grab your socks and fabric paint, and get your shark on!

Shark-y accessories are fun no matter your age – and this one is really easy!  I love crafts using all the little wooden shapes they sell at the craft store, and I think that using these little round discs gives this shark a Pac Man-ish look.  There are a bunch of ways you could vary this project to make it as simple or as complex as you want.  I turned mine into a pin, buy you could also glue on a bail and turn it into a necklace!

Project estimate:

  • Wood discs, about $1 and up
  • Paint, on hand
  • Ultra fine Sharpie, on hand or $1 and up
  • Colored pencils or markers, on hand
  • Dimensional Magic (optional), on hand or about $3
  • Bead or googly eye, on hand
  • Pin back, on hand or $1
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  about $1 and up

Make an Easy Shark Pin

Start by painting a wooden disc with white paint.  This will give you a good base for adding colors later on.

Make an Easy Shark Pin

Use an ultra fine tip Sharpie to draw a wedge shape and line it with jagged, pointy teeth.

Make an Easy Shark Pin

Use colored pencils or markers to color the area inside the mouth red, and color the rest grey, leaving the teeth white.  Or give the teeth a little bit of red too!

Make an Easy Shark Pin

Optionally, at this point you can add a layer of Dimensional Magic over the surface of the disc to give it a shiny finish and a more professional appearance.  If you do this step, drop a small bead or a googly eye into place while the Dimensional Magic is still wet, then let dry completely; otherwise, glue the bead or googly eye into place.

Make an Easy Shark Pin

Glue a pin onto the back side of the disc and once the glue dries, it is ready to wear!

how to make a shark costume

My son loves dressing up. Whether it’s as a superhero, a tiger or a pirate he loves to make believe he’s a new person or creature. This shark shirt is easy to make and will provide hours of dress up fun. It also make a great Halloween costume or conversation piece when out and about!

Project estimate:

  • 2 grey t-shirts, $2 and up
  • Double-sided extra firm iron-on interfacing, $1 and up
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread, on hand
  • Permanent marker, on hand
  • Paper, on hand
  • Iron and press cloth, on hand
  • Scrap cardboard, free

Total: $3 and up

shark costume supplies

Step 1: Prep fabric

Before beginning, be sure to wash and dry both shirts to remove any sizing and prevent shrinkage later on.

Step 2: Cut out

Use a marker and a piece of paper to outline an image of a shark fin. Adjust size of fin based on size of wearer. Draw a dotted line around the silhouette, .25 inches from the edge. This will provide a seam allowance. See image as a guide.

shark fin template

Cut out interfacing the size and shape of the solid outline. Turn one t-shirt inside out and cut out two pieces of T-shirt from fabric, following the dotted lines (Pro tip: Make smoother seams by lining up the bottom of the shirt with the bottom of the cut out.)

trace shark fin

Step 3: Assemble

Leaving the pieces right sides together, use sewing machine to stitch with a medium length straight stitch around the sides of the t-shirt fabric, leaving the bottom open. Turn right side out and press.

sew fin with a 1/4 inch allowance

Insert the interfacing all the way into the fin pocket, trimming if needed to fit. Follow instructions that came with your interfacing to fuse it to the fabric.

insert interfacing into fin

Step 4: Attach

Fold bottom edge of fin fabric in to the center bottom of fin. Pin to hold fold if desired.

how to pin fin under

Fold t-shirt in half and press to great a press line going down the midline of the shirt. Insert scrap cardboard such as an old cereal box into the shirt.

press a crease into a shirt

Line the fin up with the crease you created on the back of the shirt, splaying the bottom edges of the fin out to either side. Pin fin edges to the t-shirt. Remove cardboard from shirt. Fold fin to one side and stitch the fin edge to the t-shirt using a narrow zig zag stitch. Repeat on other side of fin.

stitch shark fin

Step 5: Add Gills

Use permanent marker to draw two U-shaped gills on the side of the shirt under each sleeve.

draw shark gills

Have fun with your little shark!
