If you go to a large nursery/garden store later on in the summer they’ll likely give you their extra plant buckets used to temporarily hold larger plants (usually black or gray) Mine had a big stack and they let me buy a few for 10 cents each. These work just as well as more expensive pots for larger plants in container gardens and you can be creative in hiding the ugly pots. (I used to put mine behind prettier pots)

Most dollar stores also have paper (not plastic) coated 3 or 5 oz. cups which are better for starting larger seeds and they can also be planted cup and all in the garden. The shoe holder is a good idea where it isn’t too hot. You might want to drop a piece of brown cardboard in the front of each pouch before you add soil to add extra insulation so they don’t dry out as fast. Don’t use painted or dyed cardboard because they have chemicals you don’t want. You could also use rectangles cut from milk cartons instead of the cardboard.

Do you think it would work to cut up some of the large flat ‘cartons’ from buying eggs in bulk at Costco?

What GREAT ideas!!! Really innovative! Thank you for sharing them! I hadn’t thought about a moss lined basket for tomatoes, but I am now…..I also have a ‘topsy-turvy’ planter, but haven’t brought it out this year. Too busy with a new business!!
