DIY Botanical spray painted t-shirt - smart to use ferns for this project! - Dollar Store Crafts

Want to refresh a boring white t-shirt? Look no further than your backyard! Collect greenery from your yard to use in this cute botanical t-shirt made with fabric spray paint. My kids and I had a great time spray-painting t-shirts, and they turned out looking so great! Find out how to make this project in my column over at eBay: [DIY Botanical Spray Painted T-shirt]

Materials needed:

You can get a better deal on the fabric spray paint if you buy a multi-pack and use a coupon at your local craft store!

Why should you use this fabric spray paint instead of regular spray paint?

Tulip Color Shot is formulated for use on fabric, so it contains a paint softener, which gives it a way nicer feel on fabrics that you will be wearing. They have good fabric coverage, and an even spray pattern (without splatter). I have tried other fabric spray paint brands, but I prefer this brand and I recommend it.

Disclosure: I received this complementary product from the manufacturer, but was not compensated to write this post. Affiliate links included in this article. All information, wording, and opinions are strictly my own and I was not asked to post this article.

10 DIY Coasters Tutorials

Summer is all about cold beverages, and when you’ve got a frosty drink, you need a coaster. And, of course, you need that coaster to be cute. Cute and handmade. Now that’s a coaster worthy of the cocktail you’re sipping! Here are 10 DIY coasters to choose from!

1. Easy Fabric Coasters – Fabric coasters only use small squares of fabric. Did someone say stash-buster?

2. Tile Mosaic Coasters – Leftover tiles plus pretty broken glass in a rainbow of colors make beautiful coasters!

3. Map Coasters – Non-toxic Mod Podge seals those pretty vintage maps, so you can use them to create a nostalgic set of coasters.

4. Chalkboard Coasters  – Give an old set of coasters a new life with a coat of chalkboard paint and some stencils. These are holiday-themed, but you can use any stencils you like for your coasters.

5. Stamped Tiles – This will work best with a porous tile. If you’ve got something on hand that fits the bill, these coasters are very inexpensive to make.

6. Fallen Branch Coasters – You don’t need power tools to make these, but they do take some elbow grease. The result is well worth it, though!

7. Washi Tape Coasters – Combine coordinating spools of washi tape to make pretty covered coasters.

8. Fabric Coasters – Think of these as teeny, tiny rag rugs for holding your favorite cocktail.

9. Rope + Neon Coasters – The idea here is similar to the fabric coasters above, but the feel of the finished product is totally different.

10. Painted Lace – This page doesn’t have a written tutorial, but the image collage really says it all. Use lace as your stencil for vibrantly spray painted coasters.

No-Sew T-shirt pillow project - dollar store crafts

This week we are bringing you a fun no-sew stenciled pillow tutorial, courtesy of Tulip and their fine stencils and fabric paints, part of the Tulip For Your Home line. Do you have an old t-shirt that you no longer wear? Or maybe you found a stash of colorful t-shirts at the dollar store (I love it when that happens) and you want to create a cute home decor accent. Well, look no further! We’ll teach you how to make a cute stenciled t-shirt pillow – no sewing required!

But first, check out the gorgeous pillow cover we made using Tulip’s NEW Tulip For Your Home goodies — a line of home décor stencils and paints (including large scale stencils and contemporary home decor color paints)!

Leopard & Lips Stenciled Pillow

I’m loving the copper paint on the blue-grey pillow cover! By the way, the pillow covers are part of the Tulip For Your Home program, so you’ll be able to find them right with the stencils & paint at your local craft store. The stencils are designed to coordinate, and come in different sizes so you can layer them over each other.

Once we made this pillow cover, we couldn’t wait to get busy and do a second project! This is where we show you how to make the no-sew stenciled t-shirt pillow!

No-Sew Stenciled Owl T-shirt Pillow Tutorial

Are you afraid of sewing? Look no further than this cute and easy no-sew pillow project. This is a great tween craft!

No-sew stenciled tshirt pillow tutorial - great tween craft from dollar store crafts!

Project Materials:

  • 1 T-shirt (the larger, the better)
  • 8″ Owl Stencil from Tulip For Your Home
  • Blue Tulip Soft Fabric Paint
  • Tulip Paint Roller
  • An old pillow
  • Freezer Paper
  • Iron

How To Make It:

Stencil your t-shirt with an Owl stencil from Tulip

1. Stencil Your T-shirt:

Prepare your t-shirt by ironing freezer paper to the inside of the t-shirt. (Put the freezer paper plastic side down, and iron on the paper side until freezer paper is stuck to the t-shirt). Turn shirt right-side out (freezer paper will be on the inside).

Spray Tulip Stencil Spray Adhesive lightly on the back of the owl stencil. Place stencil on t-shirt and press in place .

Apply Tulip Soft Fabric Paint to stencil with the Tulip Paint Roller. Remove the stencil to reveal the owl design. Let paint dry up to 1 hour. Clean stencil immediately.

2. Trim and Tie T-shirt

Trim and Tie T-shirt to create a no-sew pillow

Cut t-shirt just below armpits, and cut off waistband hem. Cut sides of t-shirt off.

Cut 2″ notches in the sides of the t-shirt squares, about 1″ apart. Cut a notch in at the corner of the square.

Tie top and bottom t-shirts together to create the pillow without sewing!

Leave a few ties untied and stuff pillow with stuffing (we used the stuffing from an old misshapen pillow we had on hand).

When the pillow is stuffed, tie the last ties until it’s all closed up.

DIY No-sew t-shirt pillow - great tween craft and great way to recycle your old tshirts!

Halloween Ribbon Embroidery Hoops

A couple of weeks ago I was at Michaels and all of the Halloween ribbon was on sale half price. How could I resist a deal like that? So I came home with a couple of fun, bright patterns. As I was trying to find space to cram them into my overflowing ribbon rack, I decided that some sort of Halloween craft incorporating ribbon was a must. So I grabbed my new spools, as well as some ribbon left over from my ribbon-wrapped wire pumpkin project, and started brainstorming. When I came across a few small embroidery hoops that I bought from a discount shop near my grandparents’ house, a little lightbulb went on in my head. Idea! And so these cute little stripey Halloween decorations came to be.

Project estimate:

  • Embroidery hoops, on hand or about $.75 each and up
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1 and up
  • Spray adhesive, on hand or about $3 and up
  • Shower curtain liner or scrap fabric, $1
  • Chipboard letters, on hand or $1

Total:  $1 and up

tracing embroidery hoop center

Remove the center from one of the embroidery hoops.  Use it as a template to trace three circles onto a piece of shower curtain liner.  I chose the liner because it was cheap, thin, pliable, and was a good surface for my spray adhesive to stick to.  You can also use scrap fabric for this, but make sure it’s a light, solid color; any patterns may show through the ribbon, and dark colors could make the ribbon look discolored.

Halloween ribbon craft

Spray the circles with adhesive.  You want to use adhesive with a permanent bond for this, and work fairly quickly before it dries completely.  (Most permanent spray adhesives have an extended tack time that will allow you to make any adjustments needed before it becomes permanent.)

Cut the ribbon into pieces and line them up side-by-side until you have completely covered each circle.  Use your fingernail to burnish the surface, making a firm bond between the ribbon and the shower curtain.   Let the adhesive dry.

ribbon embroidery hoops

Carefully mount each sheet of ribbon strips in an embroidery hoop.  You can choose to align the stripes so that they all go in the same direction, or arrange them so that each hoop is a little bit different for a more random look.  Flip the hoops over and trim off any excess shower curtain and ribbon from the back side.

(You can see a couple of places where the ribbon puckered a little as I was putting the embroidery hoops around them; later I went back with a tiny dab of contact cement on a q-tip and touched it up.  This happened the worst on the piece I did last because the glue was too dry by the time I added the ribbon; to prevent this, if I were to do it again I would spray adhesive on my circles one at a time instead of all at once!)

ribbon hoop Halloween decorations

To finish the look, add a simple sentiment using chipboard or wooden letters.  I used spray paint to make mine bright yellow and give them good contrast against the ribbon background.  My letters had a peel-and-stick backing, but if yours don’t a few dabs of hot glue should do the trick.  Now hang them on the wall and admire your handiwork!

how to make your own basket with rope

Baskets are a great way to make a room instantly look organized. Got a pile of stuff? Throw it in a basket! Suddenly it looks neat and organized even though you didn’t change a whole lot. The downside of baskets is that they can cost quite a bit. That is, of course, unless you take the lead from I Heart Organizing, and you make your own basket using a laundry basket frame and upholstery cord! Upholstery cord dyes nicely as well, giving it lots of personalizing options. [how to make your own DIY rope basket]

Project estimate:

  • Laundry basket, $1 and up
  • Spray paint, on hand
  • Upholstery cord ($3 a package for 6 packages), $18
  • Fabric Dye (optional), on hand or $3 and up

Lettered Kitchen Sign with Dollar Store Frames

When Todd & Lindsey decided that their kitchen decor needed a little TLC, the solution they settled on was some custom artwork.  Lindsey got to work with some dollar store frames and a remnant of fabric, and when she got done she had this fabulous little framed, lettered sign to hang!  Not only does she share the how-to for the artwork, she also shows her method for hanging the frames in a straight line and evenly spaced on the first try.  (This is particularly good news for people like me, who tend to make 3 or 4 nail holes in the wall before finding that “just right” position!)  [how to make a framed lettering sign]

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

Celebrate New York Fashion Week with a DIY designer-inspired cuff bracelet!  This easy DIY was inspired by a $400 Michael Kors cuff and uses an unexpected material – a can. You can completely customize this cuff bracelet with different papers or fabrics.

Project estimate:

  • Can, on hand
  • Duct tape, on hand
  • Textured paper, about $1
  • Fingernail polish, on hand
  • Mod Podge, on hand
  • Felt, on hand
  • Spray adhesive, on hand

Total: about $1

Choice of can is important. A Hunt’s tomato paste can works best since it’s not too big and has a seam on both the top and the bottom of the can.

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

For this size can you will need to cut a piece of textured or patterned paper that is 3 1/16″ by 6 5/8″ and a piece of felt or similar fabric for a liner at 3 3/8″ by 6 5/8″. To save measuring you can use a template I uploaded at examiner.com.

Remove the paste from the can and make a marinara. Wash the can.

Remove the top and bottom of the can with a can opener.

Cut the can open along the seam using tin snips. (Careful. Your edges will be sharp.) Bend it open a little so that it will slip over your arm easily.

Duct tape the edges and corners as show below.

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

Paint the seams with gold fingernail polish or gold paint and allow to dry.

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

Mod Podge the can and apply the paper. You can stop right here with the paper if you want a plain cuff.

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

For a Michael Kors inspired coral snake cuff, paint the paper first using fingernail polish or craft paint. (Hot pink fingernail polish will appear coral when painted on black.)

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

Coat the paper with Mod Podge and allow to dry.

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

If you’d like a shiny finish, give the cuff a coat of acrylic sealer. Dry it on a broomstick propped between two chairs.

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

Use glue, Mod Podge or spray adhesive to line the inside of the cuff with felt.

Tutorial: Easy Cuff Bracelet

Enjoy your designer-inspired cuff.
