Make a Hanging Hoop Planter

I have a bad crafting habit of using the inside part of embroidery hoops for projects (like this chandelier and these wind chimes), but not the outside part of the hoop.  But I always hang onto that outside part, just in case a project comes along that call for one.  And here is that project!  Alex from Northstory came up with this great hanging planter idea that uses an embroidery hoop to mount a bowl and create a planter that is as inexpensive as it is beautiful.  Imagine your porch lined with these, and your plants spinning in the summer breeze.  Now I am glad that I saved those extra bits leftover from previous projects!  [how to make a hanging hoop planter]

Project estimate:

  • Embroidery hoop, $1 and up
  • Bowl, on hand or $1
  • E6000 glue, on hand or about $3 and up
  • Twine or cord for hanging, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $1 and up

Mske Stenciled Chalkboard Flower Pots

I love fancy flower pots. I’ve even been known to acquire new houseplants just as an excuse to buy particularly nice pots that catch my eye. But, and this is a big but, the cost of a pretty planter is often more than I am willing to pay. Why spend a wad of cash when you can DIY ’em for so much cheaper? We’ve seen chalkboard painted flower pots before, but Vanessa from Tried & True stepped these up a notch on the wow-factor scale by adding some cute stenciled designs! [how to make stenciled chalkboard flower pots]

Project estimate:

  • Flower pot, $1 and up
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Chalkboard paint, about $5
  • Stencils, on hand or $1 and up

Total: $6 and up

Tutorial: "Watch It Grow" Planter

My kids love anything outdoors.  A few years back their grandparents gave them this planter where you could see the plants grow under the soil.  It was very cool.  The kids asked about it the other day and I couldn’t find it to save my life.  I decided I can make my own.  A Dollar Store clear plastic container and some potting soil did the trick.

Tutorial: "Watch It Grow" Planter

Project estimate:

  • Clear plastic container, $1
  • Potting soil, on hand or $1
  • Seeds, 4/$1
  • Knife, on hand

Total: $1.25 and up

Tutorial: "Watch It Grow" Planter

First flip your container over and poke holes in it for drainage.  I used a kitchen knife and it worked great.  Don’t press to hard or you will crack the plastic.

Next fill container with potting soil.  Fill about 3/4 the way up.  Then add your seeds.  We added ours towards the outside edge so you can see the roots really well.

Tutorial: "Watch It Grow" Planter

Poke some holes in the top just as you did the bottom for ventilation.  Water in the seeds and place top on container.  If you are planning to have it in the house you’ll need to put something under it to catch the water run off.  Dollar Store has great cookie sheets or roasting pan which will work well.

You’re done!  Watch it over the next few weeks and see what happens under the soil as you grow beautiful plants.

*If you’d like to grow root vegetables such as carrots just get a deeper container.

Make self-watering recycled bottle planters

If you fancy yourself a gourmet, you know that nothing else quite compares to the flavor of fresh herbs. However, if you live in a place with cold winters, keeping an herb garden going year-round is a little more difficult. That is why we love this project by Naomi Shulman at Spoonful. Not only does this planting system allow you to keep fresh herbs in your kitchen throughout the year, it also has a couple of other perks we really like: it uses recycled materials, and it is self-watering. (If you’re as bad as I am at remembering to water your plants, that is a priceless feature!) I’ve been hoarding some colorful plastic bottles from some juices that I bought a while back, and I am now imagining them lining my windowsill and full of little plants! [how to make self-watering recycled bottle planters]

Project estimate:

  • Plastic bottles, on hand
  • Soil, on hand or $1
  • Seeds or seedlings, on hand or $1 and up

Total: Free and up
