Make Crocheted Slippers with Flip Flop Soles

We’ve seen a lot of clever flip flop makeovers over the years, but this one just might be the best! Jess from Make & Do Crew combined flip flop soles with cotton yarn for a light-airy pair of slippers that is perfect for summer! For this project you might even want to “splurge” on a $3 or $4 pair of flip flops instead to get a more sturdy foam sole to work with. [how to make crocheted slippers with flip flop soles]

Project estimate:

  • Flip flops, $1 and up
  • Yarn, on hand or $1 and up

10 Boot Refashions for Fall

Boot season is back, baby! One of my favorite parts of fall is dusting off my little collection of cute, comfy boots. It’s always a bummer to pull out a favorite pair and find scuffs and scratches. Or just realizing that last season’s boots might be a little blah for this year. Instead of going shoe shopping, try some of these ways to refashion those old boots.

1. Glitter Boots – A pop of glitter is a great way to cover up scuffed heels on an old pair of boots.

2. Pop of Color Boots – Raid your fabric stash and use your prettiest scrap pieces to add a little colorful detail to your favorite boots.

3. Color Blocked – I love how this boot refashion reminds me of saddle shoes. So sweet.

4. Gold Toes – Who says socks are the only way to sport a gold toe? Cover scuffs and scratches and add a little sparkle at the same time.

5. Lace-Covered Boots – Use a bit of lace to cover imperfections and add interest to a plain pair of boots.

6. Polkadot Rain Boots – Make your puddle-stomping a little bit cuter.

7. Removable Bling – Give your combat boots a glam touch without committing with this removable embellishment.

8. Western Faux Steel Toe – This is a more stylized take on the color-blocked toe, and it’s so cute!

9. Studded Ankle Boots – Trim and transform your boots into trendy ankle boots with a little bit of a hard edge.

10. Cut Out Boots – Take a pair of tall boots from modest to sassy with an X-acto knife.

Make Pinata Shoes

Here’s a costume idea that’s perfect for those of you who want to dress up for Halloween but not wear a full costume:  piñata shoes!  Pair these fun shoes with a shirt that says “candy”, or pin wrapped candy to your shirt and pants.  These costume shoes are easy to make, and everyone who sees them can’t help but smile!

Pinata Costume Shoes

Project Estimate:

  • Shoes, on hand
  • Fabric, on hand
  • Hot glue gun, on hand
  • Googly eyes, on hand
  • Foam or styrofoam, on hand

Total:  Free

DIY Piñata Shoes Costume
Note:  I used lace up shoes, but if you do so, use a pair that is slightly larger than your foot.  It is difficult to loosen and put on the shoe after the fabric has been glued on.  This would work best with slip on shoes.

Step one:  Cut the fabric into strips that are 2 inches wide.  I used Oly*Fun fabric, which is specially designed not to fray, and looks like tissue paper but is durable and weather proof.  Cut the strips into fringe.

Step two:  Use the hot glue gun to adhere the strips to the shoes.  Start at the front, and go to the top of the shoe tongue.  If your shoe has laces, just glue the sides down to leave the laces free.  Hot glue the fringe to the back of the shoe, as pictured.  Trim off any excess fringe.

Step three:  Cut two pieces of foam into triangles, and glue the fringe on.  Hot glue them to the sides of the shoes as ears for the donkey piñata.

Step four:  Hot glue the eyes on.

DIY Pinata Costume Shoes

I used foam for the ears so they’d be lightweight and can bounce back from being rubbed together when you walk.  I’ll be wearing my piñata shoes as part of a bigger costume that is still a work in progress (stay tuned!), but as I mentioned earlier, you could cover yourself with wrappers or candy to complete the look.  For now, I’ve entered these shoes in a fun shoe decorating contest.  You can check out the entries and vote here if you’d like!

Crafty Candy - 6 cool crafts to make this week! from dollarstorecrafts.com

I have lots of crafty goodies for you this week, my friends! Some of them inspired by candy, some of them look like candy, and some are just sweet little craft projects. Which one will you make first?

Candy Crush shoes by DIY Doyenne

1. Candy Crush Sandals by DIY Doyenne

I have managed to avoid the Candy Crush addiction, but only because I am trying to discipline myself and keep on task in writing my CraftFail book! These sandals, made by the fabulous DIY Doyenne Margot Potter, are so cute you don’t even have to play Candy Crush to make them.

Speaking of candy, check out

Candy Dot T-shirt by CraftyChica.com

2. Candy Dot T-shirt by CraftyChica

I love that this shirt looks like those candy buttons, but cleverly uses fabric paint to make the candy dots. You can dress a leeeetle bit like Katy Perry without actually wearing a candy dress!

Boho Paper Jewelry by Mark Montano

3. Boho Paper Jewelry by Mark Montano

Doesn’t this jewelry look like candy? I don’t know if I should eat it or wear it! And can you believe Mark Montano made this stuff out of paper? I can’t either. I wonder if you could use candy wrappers to make it… hmmmm!

Watercolored bunting by Jaderbomb.com

4. Watercolored Bunting by Jaderbomb

And if this week wasn’t colorful enough, we have this very fun and artistic project — watercolor some fabric and turn it into this pretty bunting. Perfect reusable party decoration, or make some to adorn your craft room.

Stamped Fabric Charms by HandmadeHappyHour.com

5. Stamped Fabric Charms by Handmade Happy Hour

Paper’s not the only unconventional material you can use to make jewelry — how about fabric? Stamp some fabric and your halfway to some charming charms suitable for an adorable necklace just like this one from Cathie Filian at Handmade Happy Hour.

And finally, don’t miss Morena’s very clever tutorial this week:

Faux Ceramic Decor made out of a recycled bottle - from dollarstorecrafts.com

6. Recycled Wine Bottle into Embossed “Ceramic” Decor

I knew I should be saving our old glass bottles! Now I know exactly what to make with them — these charming embossed bottles. Such a clever project from Morena’s Corner.

So which project will you make first?
