DIY Aspen Tree Wall Art

Make your own Aspen Tree-inspired wall art with a few supplies, then your fall and winter decorating is done! This tutorial is by Jennifer of TheCraftPatchBlog, and I just love how it turned out (and how she styled her couch, with the buffalo check pillows and the knit/crochet pillows) — so cozy! Find out how to make the Aspen Wall Art here, at Crafts Unleashed: [Make Tree Art Wall Decor]

Jennifer used a specialty roll of craft foam to make the art (which is very inexpensive) but if you want to go dollar store, you could use a white posterboard to create your wall art.

I’ve been busy bringing color to the gray days of winter with my two projects for the Live.Craft.Love blog – DIY Wooden Geometric Wall Art and a Bungee Bling Necklace. Do you need to add some color to your days too? Go check these projects out!

DIY Geometric Wood Wall Art

DIY Wooden Geometric Wall Art

I love these wooden canvases – I have been using them for all kinds of fun art projects around my home, from making cute baby photo art, to letting my children paint on them for an instant gallery of kid art. For this project, I layered colored vellum onto the wooden canvas to create these colorful modern pieces of wall art.

DIY Bungee Bling Necklace

Bungee Bling Necklace:

Bungee cord is a fun material to use in jewelry making, and these large hole Mix & Mingle beads just slip right on to create a perfectly easy jewelry project. This would be a fun one for teens to make!

Medusa head wall art

As a Halloween decorator, my tastes tend to run a little toward the macabre, but with a bit of sophistication.  So when I saw this fun Medusa head wall art from Jennifer Perkins, I swooned a bit!  Hers is made using some dimensional wall art that she found at a thrift shop, but you could also use a painting.  This project is just one element of an AMAZING Halloween gallery wall that she put together – be sure to check out her post for a photo of the entire jaw-dropping wall!  [how to make Medusa head wall art]

Project estimate:

  • Thrift store art, $1 and up
  • Plastic snakes, about $2 and up (depending how many you need)
  • Glue, on hand
  • Paint (optional), on hand or $1 and up

Total:  about $3 and up

Sea Shell Picture Frame Tutorial - Want a unique way to display the shells you collect at the beach this summer? Try making this easy picture frame!

Maybe you brought back a collection of shells from a beach vacation.  Or maybe you bought a bag of them at the dollar store.  Either way, they are great for decor projects!  Want a unique way to display them?  Try making this easy picture frame!  You can fill it with your favorite photos, or you can add a fabric background and use them to display even more shells like a shadowbox.

Project estimate:

  • Picture frame, on hand or $1 and up
  • Assorted seashells, $1 and up
  • Pebbles, on hand or $1
  • Paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Placemat or fabric for background (optional), on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $1 and up

Remove the glass and backing. Start gluing the shells onto the top of the picture frame. Use a generous amount of glue. I would glue a shell on one side and then the other, but you can design them any way you like. I used the pebbles for another shape.

Using a sponge paint brush, give the entire frame a generous coat of paint and let completely dry before adding additional coat(s). Hold the frame at different angles so that you cover every bit of visible surface with paint. By using a sponge paint brush, you can squeeze in and get every nook and cranny.

Replace the glass and backing to insert a photo or create your own “picture” out of a fabric background and more shells like I did.

10 DIY Wall Art Ideas from Recycled Materials

Spring! Spring! Spring! Something about a change in seasons always makes me rethink every decor choice I’ve made in every room of my house. Adding some new wall art is a budget-friendly way to change the mood of a room without changing the entire room. Here are 10 recycled ideas to deck your walls.

1. Shoebox Art – Save those old shoeboxes to create cool wall art with a tute from Creme de la Craft!

2. Anything Herringbone Painting – The beauty of this project from While They Snooze is that you can use whatever you have handy as your canvas. Old cardboard, scrap wood, pressboard from some broken IKEA furniture…use what you have, and this wall art is dirt cheap.

3. Flatware Art – Hit the flea market or thrift store for mismatched plates and silverware to create cool wall art like Knick of Time.

4. Pallet Art – Little Bits Of created this as a faux headboard, but you could use the same technique for a pretty piece of pallet wall art.

5. Scrap Wood Art – Design Build Love has a great tute for turning a mix of scrap wood into a cohesive piece of recycled wall art.

6. Recycled Canvas Art – Thrift stores are packed with bad hotel art. Kristi’s Paintbrush shows you how to turn an ugly piece of art into something chic and modern.

7. Postcard Collage – Do you have a box full of postcards from friends and family? How About Orange has a simple tute for turning them into a gorgeous conversation piece for your wall.

8. Framed Scarf – Another thrift store project. Get yourself a pretty scarf, then follow Honey Sweet Home’s simple instructions for transforming it into wall art.

9. Ombre Art – Get yourself a piece of scrap wood and try Sarah Hearts’ simple technique for turning it into typographic ombre wall art.

10. Quote Art – This is another cool typographic art idea, this time from Six2Eleven. Raid your recycle bin for some old magazines to cut up for this one!

In addition to the dollar stores, I love to hunt the dollar bins at Michael’s craft stores.  The bins near the register are usually priced $1.50 per item, and there’s another section of the store with items that are arranged by collection and the prices range from $1-5.  These are great places to find little embellishments for projects and fun party favor items.  On my recent shopping trip I found this fun, fluffy wired ribbon.  The item reminded me of clouds, so I decided to use them to spell words to make fun cloud wall art.
diy cloud sign
Project Estimate:
  • Wood plaque – $1
  • Wired ribbon/string – $3
  • Paint – on hand
  • Glue gun – on hand
Total:  $4
supplies

Step one:  Paint the wood blue.  You can find these inexpensive plaques in the unfinished wood section of craft stores, or stock up on holiday signs at Dollar Tree to use for projects like this one.
step 1
Step two:  Twist the fluffy wired string to spell the desired word.  I used “dream” but you could spell a name or anything else you like.  Make sure the word fits on the plaque.
step 2
Step three:  Hot glue the word onto the sign.  Embellish if you like.  I punched some small butterflies from paper to add some color.  I glued a piece of the wired ribbon to the back to make a hanger.

These signs would make adorable nursery decor.  I’m hanging this in my craft room to remind me to let my imagination roam and be creative.  It’s fun to have your head in the clouds, don’t you think?

Shark Flip Flop Sculpture Wall Art - DollarStoreCrafts.com

This Shark Flip Flop Sculpture Wall Art project was a happy accident that I came up with when I was making my Shark Bitten Flip-Flop Wreath. As I trimmed the shark bites, I noticed that when turned on its side, a flip-flop kind of resembles a shark. I had one flip-flop left over from my wreath project, so I tried, and my shark sculpture idea worked! This craft is easy and cheap, and makes a surprisingly cute nautical decoration for your pool, bathroom, or kids’ room.

crafty shark week at DollarStoreCrafts.com

Project Materials:

  • One flip-flop, $.50
  • Scissors, hot glue, and a marker
  • A piece of twine or ribbon for hanging, on hand

Total cost: $.50

Shark Flip-Flop Sculpture Wall art - DollarStoreCrafts.com

1. Draw a shark shape on your flip flop with a marker. I started by making a sharp C shape for the tail, then working my way around the flip flop. If you aren’t confident in your drawing skills, trace the flip flop onto a piece of paper and make a template that way, then trace it onto the shoe. Don’t worry about drawing the fin — we’ll add that next.

2. Cut along traced lines to create the shark shape. Be sure to cut away any telltale marker lines!

3. Look through your trimmed pieces for a good shark fin piece. Trim if necessary. I found one that worked perfectly.

4. Hot glue fin onto sculpture. Add a lower fin and any other details, if desired.

5. Draw an eye on with a permanent marker.

6. Add a loop of twine or ribbon to the back of the sculpture for hanging.
