Leather feathers – as fun to say as they are to wear!  We love these chic, dangly earrings from Gina Michele.  It’s a great way to use up scraps of leather left over from other projects; if you don’t happen to have any leather on hand, old leather garments from thrift stores are also a great source of materials for this project.  If you like the leather feather look, you could also use this technique to make a necklace, or even to embellish items for your decor!  [how to make leather feather earrings]

gold leaf mirror

I always pick up at least one bag of these fabric leaves at Dollar Tree each year.  They’re such a pretty, inexpensive product to craft and decorate with.  Last year I let my kids scatter them on the table for decor, and we used some as tail feathers for our paper turkeys.  This year, I decided to give them a metallic finish to create a more luxe look.

Project estimate:

  • Fabric leaves, $1
  • Gold paint, on hand or $1 and up
  • Dimensional Magic, on hand or about $3
  • Mirror, $1
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  $2 and up

step 1
Step one:  Paint both sides of the leaves gold.

step 2

Step two:  Drop a small amount of Dimensional Magic on the leaf, and use a brush to paint the front of the leaf with the DM.  This makes the leaves a little stiffer and gives them a beautiful sheen.

last step

Step three:  Arrange the leaves as desired around the mirror, and glue them in place.

It makes a gorgeous mirror, but if you don’t want to hang it up, you could set it on a table to create a pretty centerpiece.  I think it would look beautiful paired with the cracked glass votive that I showed you how to make recently.

faux gold leaf

I liked the leaves so much that I painted a few more to make myself a pair of earrings.  Pretty, don’t you think?  I can think of so many ways to use these pretty gold leaves:  place settings, napkin rings,  or to embellish cards.  Have fun crafting and creating!

DIY Jewelry Organizer

When I saw these sweet unfinished wood hearts in the Valentine section at Michael’s, I bought them without knowing what I’d do with them.  I really don’t need anymore frames, but I could use a lot of help getting organized.  That’s when I decided to turn it into an earring holder.  Instead of the usual chicken wire, I opted to use plastic canvas, which can be painted and won’t prick your fingers like wire does!

Close up DIY Jewelry organizer

Project estimate:

  • Heart Frame, $1.79
  • Paint, on hand
  • Dimensional Magic, on hand or about $3
  • Plastic Canvas, on hand or $.50
  • Glue, on hand

Total:  $1.79 and up

step 1

Step one:  Paint the wood heart frame.

step 2

Step two:  Cut the plastic canvas to fit the frame and spray paint it.

Step three:  Apply Dimensional Magic to the heart frame.

step 3

Step four:  When everything is dry, glue the plastic canvas onto the back of the frame.

Jewelry Organizer DIY

You could add pegs or hooks to the frame to be able to hang jewelry if you want to.  I’m happy to finally have a dedicated space to hold my earrings, like the steampunk pair I showed you how to make.  You could also try these amazing hot glue drop earrings or these perler bead earrings, and build a collection to store on your new organizer!

DIY Time in a Bottle Earrings

I don’t know about you, but I never wear a watch anymore.  With all the portable electronic devices we have today, I never need to ask what time it is.  As a result, I have a collection of old, inexpensive watches that never get used.  I decided to take some of them apart to use the pieces to create something new.  I used empty vial charms to create steampunk-inspired “time in a bottle” earrings.

Make Time in A bottle Earrings
Project estimate:

  • Vial charms, $2.37 for pair
  • Watch, on hand or $1 and up
  • Dimensional Magic, on hand or about $3

Total: $2.37 and up

Supplies
Step one:  Open the watch face and take it apart to remove the hands, gears, and other small pieces.

Step two:  Open the vial.  Apply Dimensional Magic to a watch part, and use tweezers to place the part in the vial glass.  The lighter pieces adhered quickly, while the larger ones needed some time to set.  Repeat as desired.

step 1

Step three:  Reassemble the vial.  Twist the end of the wire that comes with the vial to make a loop.  You can hang a charm from it, or use it to add a jump ring or attach it to a chain.   I added earring pieces to make a pair of earrings.

last step

It would be fun to paint the watch pieces before adding them to the vial, for a unique monochromatic look.  You could also add a charm to the end and turn the vials into steampunk-ish pendants.  Have fun crafting and creating!
