DIY Valentines Day Gifts for Guys

What is it about making Valentine’s gifts for guys that’s so darn difficult? Really, I have a hard time coming up with gift ideas for my husband at any holiday. Do you struggle with finding DIY Valentine’s Day gifts for the guys in your life, too? Check out these manly solutions!

  1. 14 Days of Love Tradition – A sweet handmade pocket pillow becomes the home for a daily reminder for your partner of how much you love him.
  2. DIY Sharpie Mug – What a perfect gift for the coffee- or tea-drinking dude! Customize a plain thrift store mug with permanent markers, and include some of his favorite coffee or tea along with.
  3. Valentine’s Day Gumball Machine – Candy is the great equalizer, isn’t it? Stock a handmade “gumball” machine with your fella’s favorite sweet treats!
  4. Mustache Canister –  Use a glass jar or container fro the thrift store to make this a repurposed project and reduce the cost.
  5. Stenciled Necktie – Grab a necktie from the thrift store and customize it with a homemade freezer paper stencil.
  6. Homemade Bitters – These take a few weeks to steep, but if the guy in your life loves a good cocktail, they’re worth the wait!
  7. Wooden Bottle Opener – This would make a great gift paired with a six pack of fancy beer.
  8. Dad Rocks Jar – What dad wouldn’t love a reminder that you think he’s doing an awesome job?
  9. Homemade Skeeball Machine – OK, I admit it: this is like getting my guy a bowling ball with my name engraved on it. How much fun would you guys have playing skeeball together EVERY DAY FOREVER?
  10. DIY iPad Cover – A used or thrifted notepad is perfect for making a sturdy cover for your guy’s gadgetry.

Have you created any good DIY Valentine’s Day gifts for guys? Tell us about them in the comments!

Tutorial: Valentine's Day Mini Mobile

I love coming up with uses for the holiday “table scatter” that Dollar Tree sells for every season. Usually the table scatter they sell is made from craft foam covered in glitter, but I recently found some that is small, transparent plastic hearts. I immediately thought that they would look nice with the sun shining through them. So I turned them into a cute little mobile to hang in a window! I thought about going out and buying a few supplies for this project, but then decided instead to be resourceful and hunt down items I already had around the house to finish the assembly. I’m glad I did, because I think I like the improvised version even better than the original design that I had in my head!

Tutorial: Valentine's Day Mini Mobile

Project estimate:

  • Valentine table scatter, $1
  • Fishing line, on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand
  • Small canning jar ring, on hand
  • Yarn, on hand or $1 and up

Total: $1 and up

Tutorial: Valentine's Day Mini Mobile

Cut the fishing line into segments about a foot long. (I used 6 strands total to make my mobile.) Place a dab of glue on the back of a heart (hot glue works great!) and carefully place the fishing line onto the heart. Continue adding hearts until you’ve filled about 8 inches of the string, leaving a few extra inches at the top of the string for tying off. I made three strands with 4 heart and three strands with 5 hearts.

Tutorial: Valentine's Day Mini Mobile

When the glue is dry/cool, tie the strands to the canning jar ring. I alternated between 4-heart and 5-heart strands all the way around. To keep them spaced evenly, add a dab of glue to each tied-off strand around the top of the canning jar ring.

Tutorial: Valentine's Day Mini Mobile

Wrap the canning jar ring with yarn to give it a more finished look. I used some Vanna’s Glamour yarn with a metallic thread running through it because I like the little bit of sparkle. To make a hanger, I braided some more yarn to make a thicker strand and glued the ends into the yarn wrapping to secure them.

Quick & Cute Dollar Store Valentine Door Decor

I love door decor that is just a shade different than the expected. Take this quick and cute Valentine frame-wreath made by Breanna at Dollar Store Mom. She took some cheap goodies she found at the dollar store and dangled them from a frame, which makes for a sweet little accent for her front door. Putting a frame on your front door is whimsical, cute, and unexpected. And it only costs a couple bucks! [dollar store valentine wreath]

Project Estimate:

  • 8×10 frame, $1
  • Heart shaped bracelets- $1 for a pack of 8
  • X and O “table scatter”- $2.50 for a box of 150 (found in the dollar section at Target last year)
  • Twine/string- on hand
  • Hot glue, duct tape- on hand

Cost: about $4.50

Look through the aisles of the dollar store and see what V-day decor grabs you! This year, it seems like we are gravitating toward those plastic heart containers!

pom pom valentine wreath

I’ve talked before about my wreath stalking tendencies. I particularly love atypical wreaths. The kinds of door decor that makes you pause and go “oooooh.” And that’s exactly what happened when I saw Heidi from Honeybear Lane’s fluffy Valentine’s Day wreath. Heidi says she bought 12 packages of pom-poms to make her wreath but it appears her packages contained fewer poms than the large bags at the dollar store. If you want to do an all pink wreath, you may need extra packages, but if you like mixed colors, you could probably buy just 3 bags of dollar store poms to make one wreath. If anyone makes one, please let us know how many bags you used!  [how to make a pom pom heart wreath]

Project estimate:

  • Heart shaped wreath form, $3 and up
  • 6 bags of pom-poms, $6 and up
  • Hot glue gun and glue, on hand
  • Ribbon for hanging, on hand

Total: $9 and up
