Tutorial: Candy Bouquet - dollar store crafts

Do you want to impress someone with a wonderful handmade gift, but you’re on a budget? Here’s the perfect solution: make a candy bouquet! Use dollar store candy and supplies to make an inexpensive, yet very impressive bouquet, made up of your gift recipient’s favorite sweet treats.

Tutorial: Candy Bouquet

Anyone can make a candy bouquet! It is a simple and clever craft, and looks so impressive once it’s done.

Project estimate:

  • Floral foam, $1
  • Glass container, on hand or $1
  • Assorted candy, $1.00 and up
  • Bamboo skewers, on hand or $1
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Basket filler, $1

Totals: $3 and up

How to Make a Candy Bouquet Video Tutorial:

Read on for written instructions for how to make a candy bouquet:

Tutorial: Candy bouquet

  1. Cut the floral foam to fit the inside of the container.  Floral foam is very easy to cut. You can simply use a knife to slice to cut to the right size.

2. After the foam is on place put basket filler on top.  You may chose to glue it in place.

3. This is the fun part!  Using the glue gun place a small amount of glue on the candy and place the skewer flat on the glue.

Cut skewers with utility scissors to make them different lengths — this makes a more pleasing bouquet!

4. Once it has cooled, arrange the candy skewers in the container.  Continue placing the candy in the container until you have the desired look. Trim skewers if necessary to give the bouquet a range of “flower” heights!

The wonderful thing about candy bouquets is they can be given to anyone.  They can be a birthday present, boss gift, husband gift, graduation gift (slip some gift cards in  between the candy), Mother’s Day (place flowers randomly around the candy), a treat for someone in the hospital, etc.  You name it!  Another great gift for someone with a flower allergy!  Wedding center piece?? You decide!

What do you think? Could you make a candy bouquet? (We think so! They are so easy and fun!)

DIY Hot Cocoa Mix Ornament Gift Idea

Here’s an adorable and super-easy craft to make for friends, neighbors, or teachers: a DIY Hot Cocoa Mix Ornament. The secret to these cuties are the mini glass milk bottles and of course, some dollar store ingredients! Find my full instructions over at Live.Craft.Love: [DIY Hot Cocoa Mix Ornament]

Project Materials:

(Items in bold can be purchased at the dollar store)

  • Mini Milk Bottle
  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Christmas sprinkles
  • Chocolate chips
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Baker’s twine
  • Red ribbon
  • Funnel

Where did I get my inspiration for this craft?

Have you seen those cute clear ornaments filled with hot cocoa mix and given as gifts? I think they are really cute, but they freak me out. Why do they freak me out? Well, it’s because those glass bulb ornaments were never meant to contain edible items, and they often have shards of glass at the top hole of the ornaments. I would NEVER drink hot cocoa mix from one of those glass bulbs, and I would never tell you to make an ornament like that to give to someone else who might drink the mix. I would hate it if someone ingested a glass shard!

For that reason, I decided to create a food-safe version of the craft, using these mini milk bottles. And you know what? I think these are even cuter than the glass ornament version!

What do you think?

Repackage dollar store treats into a gift box - makes them way more special!
Yes, I love the dollar store, but that doesn’t mean I want everything to look like it came from the dollar store — especially when I am giving gifts to teachers, friends, co-workers, etc. (In fact, that’s kind of what this site is all about — taking things from the dollar store and transforming them into something way more fabulous!). Today I want to share a neat little trick I have for making dollar store treats look fancier — repackaging them into custom candy gift boxes.

Project Materials:

  • Dollar store treat boxes, 4 for $1
  • White cupcake baking liners, $1
  • A variety of dollar store candy or cookies, $1 per package — we used 5 per box

Total: $7 and up (less than $2 per gift box)

Dollar store treat packaging

I was inspired to do this project for 12 Months of Martha by Martha Stewart’s line of holiday treat packaging, available at Michaels, Jo-Ann’s, and other craft retailers. You can find treat boxes, bags, and other goodies in the line. You will also find a variety of treat packaging at the dollar store – from treat boxes, to bags, to printed cellophane wrap.

Assembling a custom dollar store treat box

Assembling a custom dollar store treat box

1. Choose a variety of cookies and candy at the dollar store. I chose mine based on looks and appeal. Some of my picks include: peanut brittle, old fashioned peppermint sticks, chocolate-covered peanuts, chocolate-nut clusters, frosted gingerbread man cookies, and red gummy fish.

2. Assemble a box, and insert white baking liners to hold candies.

Note: I found white baking liners in the cooking pan section of the dollar store, and I bought two sizes: standard cupcake and mini cupcake size. You can also use printed cupcake liners, but I think the white ones look classier and make a good backdrop for the color of the treats.

3. Fill the box with candy, adding a second layer of treats if desired. You will need to put some kind of sturdy divider between the layers of treats (I used a second treat box, collapsed).

Tip: If you will be shipping this gift box, you should stabilize the contents of the box with tissue paper to keep treats from shifting and mixing together.

Dollar Store treats packaged in a Martha Stewart box

The Martha Stewart treat box makes these dollar store candies look high end!

Yes, you can give a classy-looking gift on a dollar store budget! These custom candy boxes make great hostess gifts, or gifts for teachers, friends, neighbors, and others.

Custom candy gift box with treats from the dollar store - why didn't I think of that?

Disclosure: I participate in 12 Months of Martha, sponsored by Martha Stewart. I am provided with Martha Stewart product. Project, photos and opinions are my own.
